just watched the first OAV, to some mixed reactions no doubt.

first of all, they spend way too much time on flashbacks. I didn't wait 11 years to watch old footage. maybe because a new audience is now watching it and haven't seen the old OAVs, but seriously...

hooray, they're finally dealing with that tokimi-sama storyline they hinted at then made us wait 11 years to conclude. new bad guy introduced, but hardly anything happened.

I feel bad for ryoko. I think the first episode of the first OAV was the only time they ever drew her "pretty." I think somewhere along the line the animators forgot she was supposed to be attractive.

now we know that the TV > movie timeline is completely different from the OAV timeline. not just the absense of mihoshi's partner kiyone, but...

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
now apparently, tenchi's late mother's name is kiyone, and not achika as seen in the first tenchi movie. this would also explain why in the OAV his flashbacks have his mom with white hair, while achika's hair was blackish.

End of Spoiler

as in all anime, time flows funny. I guess this takes place mere months after the previous two OAV serieses. the school that was in the first episode is still being rebuilt, and they still talk about all the damage that happened when aeka / ryoko fought. plus, that fat dude with the big nose that tenchi punched out now has a name. so as far as OAV continuity goes, it is pretty solid, as long as you forget the TV series and movies exist.

it held my attention, I have to see the next one. maybe I'm wrong, maybe they'll link all the different continuities somehow...

for great justice.

It barely held my interest, and seeing the recap footage was a painful reminder of just how good it was both in visuals and in content. The exaggerated humor, the unnecessary bits (Reiya's "hug" with Tenchi, missing Ryo-ohki), and the simpler palette definitely jarred the continuity somewhat.

All I can say is that the second ep better come through (introduce Noike, more Z, better jokes, etc.). I'd really hate to have to shelve this with the disappointing TiT and TF movie.

I actually liked TF... as a movie, not as a Tenchi movie. I thought the tone was way off for Tenchi and that it was definitely slow in parts, but I found it interesting in a "what if Tenchi tried to be a serious drama" kinda way. TiT is indeed garbage, though (I'm not particularly fond of Tenchi TV either). Here's to hoping the 3rd OVA series is a step up from the most recent Tenchi-related shows (TiT, GXP, etc.).

I liked certain episodes of TiT while I found Tenchi TV to be incredibly dull for the most part. The original OAVs were far better than both of them combined though.

I'm in no rush to see these new ones, especially after hearing the impressions here.
