"Half-Life 2 Source Code STOLEN!!!" , posted Fri 3 Oct 11:36post reply

from IGN.com:
Gabe Newell, Head of Valve Software, creators of the Half-Life franchise, confirmed today that the apparent Half-Life 2 source code leaked today to the Internet is indeed not a hoax, or just a leaked HL2 SDK (Software Developer Kit) which would contain only tools, documentation and some sample code. Valve was able to determine that the code was apparently stolen by someone hacking into their email system and installing keystroke recorders on some systems through an apparent buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane.

MAN I can't belive some one stole the Soucre code of a Huge game from a huge company!
now if the thief could just dump the game to kazaa and BT , that will destroy the sales of the game -_- .

Not necessarily. The code won't have the textures, sounds, or models that are the actual game. You can't just take the source and "make" a retail Half-Life 2.

From what [little] I understand, having the source would make cheating (bots, wallhacks, etc) a lot easier, to the point of doing it from day one. So it may ruin the overall online experience.

From a neutral standpoint, it'll be interesting to see what happens from here on.

Right. From what I hear, the code does compile... but it's a couple months old as-is, and yeah, there's no textures or maps or any of that... oh, that unimportant stuff.

Yes. Not only that, this means the much-touted amazing HL2 physics engine is semi-public knowledge. Of course, anyone stealing code from it would obviously be caught and smacked around. But now it's out there to learn from.

On the upside to this, people will find workarounds for Steam, which is good, because DRM is bullshit. And I hate it. All forms of it. I can't condone the actions, but I can't condone Steam either. Heh. But this could stem into a long debate about companies treating consumers like criminals, and making them jump through hoops to enjoy games, while criminals get the games anyway, and with much less hassle because of no CD hacks and various other stuff.

I make no point of being neutral... I don't like Valve. Well, my anger over the perfectly good DC and Mac ports of Half-Life being discarded and never making it to market should be directed at Sierra more than anyone, but the way they're wrapped up around Microsoft is uncool. Yes, this DirectX stuff sure is dandy, but if you ever want to see a game show up on Linux or Mac OS X or anything else, too bad. Not gonna happen, without a lot of doing. Games that only see release on Windows help encourage the MS chokehold on the desktop. Granted, it doesn't affect me much. I don't play PC games... I didn't even when I ran Windows. I have a Mac now and I'm happy with it, but I still think a majority of people see MS as the only option.

The myth that Macs are incompatible with everything is finally being dispelled, and Linux is slowly, ever so slowly, making steps toward being a viable desktop solution. Games for Windows only... it's just not a good thing.

However, if it comes out on Xbox, I'll probably play it. Hypocritical? Oh yeah.

Anyway, it's kinda funny... the way the source was probably stolen? Outlook exploit. Tee hee...

If they are using Outlook, they deserve it. A top class developer should know that Outlook in particular is the most vulnerable piece of shit software ever created.

Heh, next thing we hear: "Sorry, Half-Life 2 won't be released. We got a virus in our computer through Outlook and it erased all our harddrives. And we used the backup cds for frisbees on our latest party."

And I agree with the treating people like criminals thing. When I boot DoA3 after not playing it for months, I get this long, unskippable FBI sequence. And Morrowind PC runs slower because it checks for the CD all the time. I paid for these games, give me a ****ing break!

Wasn't Outlook so bad that Microsoft officially announced that they gave up on releasing security updates to it?

I thought Outlook was OK, the problems were with Outlook express? Was it the opposite?

the "amazing" physics engine is Havok's physic engine(just like math engines karma for ut2k3), they just put it to good use

anyway the code is only good for those who want to make cheats for the game

Interesting. I still wanna play with it, when it's out.

The cheats I can deal without, though...

More like the code will lead to someone making this POS work better with Nvidia cards (Okay, I should not say POS because I think the game will be decent, but it is ridiculous to have spent so much money and time and not make it run efficiently on each competitors cards).

No. Microsoft gave up on Outlook Express but for a different reason. Microsoft wants non-corporate users to switch to their web-based e-mail services like Hotmail, while leaving (regular) Outlook for corporate clients.

Still, using Outlook for critical mail sounds stupid to me.

I will not say Valve deserves it, nobody deserves anything like this, but I do question why they would leave the source code on a computer hooked up to the internet. Not even Microsoft is that foolish.

It is even more interesting when you read the letter from Gabe Newell who says there was suspicious activity on that computer from the beginning but not once did he consider pulling the internet plug on it.

By the way, Valve needs to worry more about the source code to the Havoc engine being leaked, technically it could get them sued since they had a contract and licensed the code from another company...

nvidia wants developers to code a specific way for their specific cards

no one has time for that shit, why do that when there already is a standard for graphics cards

According to Valve they've spent 5x the time optimizing for Nvidia cards than they did for they're generic DX9 path. "ATI hardware didn't need it"
