This may sound like a stupid question, but as 11 even been released in America yet? I know it has been in Japan. It seems pretty early to already be revealing the sequel.
It seems there are TONS of FF games and related stuff now it used to be a really spreadout series. FF11, FFTA, FF CC, Kingdom Hearts(semi FF spinoff) now a FF7-2 cg thing.

Nope! Not yet, but I do believe it's been in beta for a while. Blah. I don't like a main-series game being online only. But I have no room to talk... I've hardly been a fan of recent FFs. I'll let the fans debate it and stay out of it.

11 is Square's Final Fantasy MMORPG and is 1.5 years old in Japan so there has been a big time gap between it and 12. Also it was developed by an entirely different team that still maintains it so it's kind of the Final Fantasy series outlier.
It's kinda like Final Fantasy Tactics in that it's a radical departure from the series, but it feels more like Final Fantasy than some of the more recent Final Fantasies did so I have no problems with it being in the main series.

The character designs are being done by Akihiko Yoshida (FFT, Vagrant Story). This alone is reason enough for me to be excited about it.
