I was playing SvC: Chaos today on a whim to kill time (I wasn't seriously planning on staying), and then other people started challenging me. Eventually toward the fifth win in a row I had blisters forming on my index finger and thumb, and then I eventually lost (not to mention I wanted to leave...).

So I was wondering, are my hands just weak that I blister easily, or do I not play enough?

I found Kagami's sword in a junk yard.
I will rule the world and find that truly good cup of coffee.

I thought you were weird at first ; ) But then I remembered that this has happened to me. Never at the arcade but at home when I play like 3 hours of any game, but usually its 3S that makes my hands to hurt the most.

Don't lose hope young fighter! You are on the road! The game... is you!

I took a really long break away from KOF and the arcades (oh heck, it's almost the same reason as I got disgruntled with the series after playing 2K1), and to come back so weak is pretty bad. I mean, heck, I usually only got them when playing Dreamcast fighters on the standard pad (and it was only my thumb).

I got blisters from home control pads and computer keyboards, never from arcade joystick. Some blisters don't necessarily mean that your hands are week though.

I used to have some but they've gone away since I haven't play as many action games lately.

happens to me if I play fighters on the PSX for extended periods of time. Just that damn D-pad, really.

Same here. I've never had blisters or anything from joysticks, but from d-pads. Actually, I never had blisters, but my thumb has gotten sore in the past. You know, where the d-pad rubs against your left thumb (with me, it's right in the thumb joint)? I only really had that when I first got into fighting games like Alpha2 on PSX. I think the last time I've had the raw thumb thing was when I got GGX.

I think the first time was with Clay Fighter on Sega Genesis?? I don't remember. I just remember that was one of the games that wore my thumb out.

I've had the same problem with arcade joysticks recently as well. The last time I was in an arcade I really started to feel it after a couple of rounds of going for 360 grabs. That's what I get for mostly playing console games nowadays.

I had blisters after a weekend of fighting, mainly using arcade sticks. And only on the three fingers on my right hand that I use for buttons.

And SFEX was a killer for your left thumb. Doing all those motions in that practice mode...

I think that your hands are a bit weak. I have personally experienced that myself, but only with the old PSX controller.

Now my left thumb has a hard layer of flesh where I actually ripped the flesh off of my thumb. I did this playing too much SFA3.

I've never had that experience with the arcade panels and I own one.

Um I have a question...a few actually...

How in the world do you get blisters playing in the arcade?

How in the world do you get blisters playing a home?

Even if you are capable of inflicting injury to yourself whilst operating a joystick or pad do you try anything to prevent it?

I have never got a blister from playing video game...so I really can't relate. lol.

i've never developed a blister from playing a videogame. however, the videogame review column for my college newspaper, which i write for, uses the title: 'blister on your thumb.'

every time i feel like i'm living a lie - i have no blisters on my thumbs. someone is going to call that on me some day, i'm sure.

what the world needs now is more postmodern videogame articles

Typically a thumb blister only happens on console game pads.

LIGHTWEIGHT

i've gotten them several times after playing with friends. a normal playing session for us is about 6-10 hours, by the way. i'm not sure how you can prevent it. play more so your hands get used to it or take more breaks during long sessions, i dunno

Presumably from either using a really rough joystick with an abrasive coating or doing something really funky with the buttons, like swiping your fingers across them when you press them instead of just pressing your finger down and then bringing it back up. Most people get into a sort of intuitive "groove" when playing fight games which can sometimes produce odd movements, so the latter really shouldn't be that surprising. Some people put too much force on the joystick, others swipe their fingers across the buttons, and personally, I do a lot of unnecessary movements during QCFx2 or QCF>DP supers on my gamepad.

Lots of control pads, for both consoles and PCs, just weren't designed for movements like QCFx2, QCF>DP, 360, or QCB>HCF. The gliding motion, if you do it fast and often enough, rubs your skin hard enough to create blisters, just like your foot rubbing against the side of a bad pair of shoes. It depends on what game you're playing, though. Last Blade's QCB>DB>F supers are very merciful on my fingers, but Super Gem Fighters Mini-Mix's four or five QCFx2 and QCF>DP supers per round not only hurt my fingers, but actually cracked the plastic on my cheap USB gamepad. Mark of the Wolves can get tiring after awhile too, mostly when I use netplay with characters like Freeman whose moves are nothing but Quarter Circle Something Or Other over and over.

Of course not. You're not really inflicting injury on yourself when you hurt the skin on your hand. It's sort of like lifting weights. The pain of what you're doing is merely the feeling of your body adapting and improving itself, in this case by acquiring thicker skin. After you get a couple of sore fingers and keep playing, you'll never have to feel it again, but if you stop playing as soon as your finger gets a little sore, you'll feel it every time you play.

Yeah, exactly. I've never gotten blisters from games, just a raw thumb. I had tried to help soothe it when I played again the next day by covering the thumb joint in thick tape, but it doesn't help much. Ah, well. Fortunately, it doesn't happen often at all.
