I've recently seen more than half of Marmalade and I keep joking around that something must be wrong with me to like it. XP Can someone recommend me some must see shoujo stuff that are obscure and not that well known in the US? Not the obvious ones like KOR, but the obscure ones like Kodomo No Omocha. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Oh heck, feel free to recommend shonen too. Cuz we all know Naruto and RK rules all.

Kimagure Orange Road is not shoujo.

Obscure shoujo. Dag! Other than Kodocha, there's not much out there.

Di Gi Charat is obscure, but that's not shoujo, despite the cute look. Karekano can be a funny shoujo (to this day, I really have trouble if I should call it a shoujo series because at times, it doesn't feel that way), but it's not off-the-wall funny. It has simplified comedy, but it is dramatic as well.

If you're willing to look at a shounen series, look at Guardress. It's flat out funny and it's a comedy that not many people know. Sure, it has little to no story, but who cares?

KOR was shoujo enough for me. You mean there are even more hardcore shoujo out there? Marmalade was pretty hardcore... (why do I feel like I'm talking about the difference between marijuana and heroin?) I still haven't seen Kodocha.

And I've never heard of any of the ones you guys just mentioned except DigiCharat and Once Wish so yup anything goes!

And I've never heard of Nana, Peach girl, Yawara, Once wish etc. So yup. ANYTHING goes! Thx yall! Is "Dag!" a shoujo too or are you quoting Snatch, Haruka-san? I've also heard of Hana Yori Dango but it seems boring. KareKano rocks.

I just said "Dag!" because shoujo series in general are not off-the-wall funny. What shoujo series in the last few years have been off-the-wall funny other than Kodocha? Uh, none?

Hime-chan no Ribon? Nope. Mizuiro Jidai? Uh-uh. Furuba? Not one of them. Fushigi Yuugi? No way. Bara no Versaille? (Yeah, I know I spelt that wrong.) That was never a comedy to begin with.

See? Shoujo series in general are not off-the-wall funny. They're just funny.

Actually, if you want, go and watch Akazukin Cha Cha. That's shoujo, it's beyond funny and it's a series I wish more people gave a shot. The problem is that it's a lot like Sailor Moon, but guess what? If you need attention, you better mimic your competition and the directors had no choice but to do it. (It never had the magical transformation in the manga from what I have heard.)

Oh yeah. I got a fan sub of the movie of Boys Over Flowers that came w/ the I Don't Want to be an Angel and the first OVA of Tokimemo. (Why the other Tokimemo OVA is hard to find is beyond me.) I should have watched the television series first because I was flat out confused on that movie. Had I watched the T.V. first, I would have liked it more.

Problem of shoujo is that it is waaay underated in the US... unfortunately that also means that you won't see many groups fansubbing them. Lame.

Anyways, you can try:

- Ultra Maniac. I guess its pretty close to what you can expect of Marmalade Boy.
- Tokyo Mew Mew. Nice Sailor Moon spinoff.
- Oniisama E
- Ashita no Nadja (not sure if technically it is a shoujo)

I think almost anything that Technogirls fansubbed in the tape days (I miss those) are good candidates.

Edit: they reopened at http://www.technogirlsfansubs.com /

Licensed stuff:

- Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou (His and Her Circumstances) as someone pointed out. It's already out in the US and is a personal favorite. Top tier.
- Hana Yori Dango. Already licensed, not sure when it is coming out.
- CardCaptor Sakura. What they did with the dub is a crime. The show is a great mix of action/cuteness/funny spots/etc.
- Rayearth. I don't think its as good as the manga. The second season is way better than the first.
- And what the heck, Sailor Moon. Sure, its pretty known in the US already, but you haven't seen Sailor Moon until you see the uncut version. Third series (S) is top tier. Sailorstars is good too.

Non shoujo but have good drama elements (read as: don't fit into the US stereotype of anime and could be confused for a shoujo)

- Saishu Heiki Kanojo (TOP TIER)
- Kokoro Toshokan
- Kanon
- Kaleidostar (wait for the american release)
- Haibane Renmei (already out)

I suppose that Ashita no Nadja (a series I really ought to see) is shoujo.

Yeah, I get Mizuiro Jidai from them. I'll pick up 9-12 before the end of the year. I don't know what Kusao Takeshi-san album was being presented during the commercials though.

I think Boys Over Flowers has been out for a short while now. Oh and yeah, don't watch CCS's dub.

Haven't seen Tokimemo, but how could I forget To Heart?

Anyway, more titles:

* Mermaid Princess Pichi Pichi Pitch
* Princess Tutu (can't comfirm if technically it is a shoujo).
* Cosmic Baton Girl Comet-san (those people in Mexico might have old memories of the live-action version called "Señorita Cometa").
* Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto (Someday's Dreamers). Licensed already. I don't think it is a shoujo but it promises a lot. I only had to see a couple episode like to convince me dish out $100 in the R2 limited boxes ^^;;)

Do you ask for translated stuff ? if so I' cannot help you since I hardly know what's out in the us or anywhere else than France. However, if you're looking for manga in japanese I might be of some help.

Glass no Kamen is the best shojo ever. It's pretty old and definitely not "funny" but felling the freakness of the heroin is good for your mind.

Who said shojo are not funny at all ?
Try ANY manga of Ai Morinaga and you'll see how funny shojo can be !
Especially Yamada tarô monogatari and Ahiru no Ôji sama.

If you like gothic stories, Vampire princess Miyû is your best friend.

If you prefer historical stuff, Onmyôji rocks the house IMO.

I think this is good and obscure enough.

Shôjo is far from being limited to sentimental comedy. In fact this is more a shônen kind of thing.

I never saw much of Mahoutsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto, but yeah, that's a good one.

I never said that shoujo series can't be funny. Mahoutsukai Tai! is definitely a funny series. I just said that shoujo series in general or a good amount of them rather are not off-the-scale funny, a la Guardress. Kodocha easily breaks this rule, but what other shoujo series out can be beyond funny? Not many. Most of them are either just "Hee hee!" funny like Mahoutsukai Tai! or not funny at all like Princess Army.

Abe-sama, some of your recommendations have question marks in them. What's the correct spelling for those titles?

Especially Yamada tar?monogatari and Ahiru no ?i sama.

Yamada tarumonogatari and Ahiru no ki sama?

If you prefer historical stuff, Onmy?i rocks the house IMO.

Onmyui?

I think this is good and obscure enough. Yup!

You're welcome but I don't know if I really deserve the "sama" thing.

Iggy filled you up but it's kinda weird. I can see what I wrote and there is no "?" Maybe a problem with your browser options?
Anyhow, some of the stuff I mentionned is worth trying it out.

Japanese and non english western signs don't get along well. IE goes by default in japanese encoding, and you have to manually say it to revert to western european language. Which can read Japanese too, for a reason I don't even want to know.

It's not really obscure shoujo, but I thought Full Moon wo Sagashite (Searching for a Full Moon) was pretty good.
