"PS2 Swap Magic converter" , posted Wed 20 Aug 19:20post reply

I was at the local video game store and saw this converter that allowed you to play import PS2, PSone and back ups for both. For it to work you have to take off the front part of the tray(the part with the rotating PS logo) and insert some stuff and discs).

I was wondering if anyone has tried this and if it is reliable and safe. Now that a Naruto game ha been announced for PS2 and Initial D Speicial Stage out I want to import games for the PS2 more than ever.

The object is like a card that you have to stick underneath your tray and pull to the right and back (I don't want to go into schematics).

Anyway it seems to be more of a hassle than it is worth, so I would advise to stay away.

The alternative (besides soldering a modchip) is a replacement shell case that adds a front-top open cover similiar to the Playstation 1 and Dreamcast that allows you to swap out discs for imports.

At first I was thinking of this, but in the past week, a new breakthrough was discovered when somebody found a security flaw in the PS2, finding a way to run code on it without a modchip.

My advise is to hold out a little bit and see if somehow they will finally be able to make a clean boot disc without the need for a modchip, I know I would love it because there are a few Gundam games from Japan I have been dying to play but I do not want to solder a modchip.

PlayStation 2 Independence: The PS1DRV Hack

from the site:
"To make a long story short, the exploit allows anyone with a memory card and
a valid, legal PS1 disc to hijack the boot process and run any piece of code.
Absolutely no modification to the system is necessary to use the exploit (my
only working PS2 is not moddded, and I have developed and tested the exploit
on this machine). All one really needs is a way to send the files to the
memory card to enable the exploit."

Yah, the problem is sending the code to your PS2 mem card. You'll need to buy some extra stuff for that.
I hope this will work for the new SCPH-5000X series of PS2s

Please don't use this exploit for evil!

Hmm, I tried doing that but I cant get the tile.db thing to appear. Can anyone try this to see if it works and give a simpler explanation? Please.

I don't have the tools to do it myself, but check out http://ps2.consolevision.com /

and look at the tutorials section for easy explanations of the exploit. Although for now I believe you can only run emulators and demo programs with it.

1.- You won't me able yo play imported originals...you can buy it, make a back up and play it.

2.- As far as I know you can't play PSone games with it

3.- There are many incompatible games (you can see a cheap list clicking here for getting started

Any other question about SM2? ^^ just drop it here

PS: Hope you are a Initial D hardcore fan...I think that's the only way you may like the game you mention -.- I have it and It very poor...as driving game.

Back ups only huh? I don't have a DVD burner to make back ups of PS2 games so I guess that is out of the question.

Indeed I am a Initial D fan. I really like the arcade stage series and as far as I have seen and from what my bro has told me it is a very good game.

I still don't know how to do that exploit thing. And I know I am so close.

Modding has become such a hassle now. I remeber you just had to clip some thing off the SNES, get a cart for the Saturn and a simple modchip was readily available for most models of the PSX.

Xbox modding ain't too hard with the solderless modchips, and so far it has the best and most ported software to it from the homebrewn scene (Although thats because its practically a x86 pc anyway, little challenge).

Your right, its really just the PS2 that has many mods that are never always reliable. The XB has the thing you mentioned and the Gamecube has action replay.

*bzzt* nope, actually you CAN play imported originals with the SM quite fine, just pop in the SM disc, wait, swap out and it loads perfectly...

2.- As far as I know you can't play PSone games with it

Indeed you can, it's a rather weird method, but if you have the Gameshark that only requires the disc, not the dongle, you merely pop in the CD SM disc, pop in the gameshark, put in whatever mod codes you need and start the PS One game as usual, it works just fine ^^

XBox is great for these purposes...not even modchip is needed...flashing the bios is ok.

GekigangerV:
Here's a description of the method you are interested in. It's an Spanish page so if you need any translation you can ask here...there are, anyway, lots of images...even one video. Looks tricky but, for many proven reasons is healthier for any console than any modchip.

PS: Hope noone minds about linking to a page about this topic...He's asking about it for playing self backups.

You most certainly CAN play original imports with it, but no every single one. It cannot load DVD9 games (of which there are, what, 3 or 4 most of us want to play?) and it chokes on games with multiple ELF files (they do a double-check with the newer model PS2s) or jsut odd stuff like SC2. I should know, I have a flip top and SM2 set, myself, and that's how I play Tekken 4 and played VF4 Evo up to the US release.

You cannot play PSone games with SM2, yes, but you can use a PSone Game Shark to load them. It works jsut the same, though you need a way to remove the disc without using the eject button on the console (like a flip top, it basically works the same as using a SM2 disc).
