Bah, I read this at IGN I think and they really seemed to focus on the fact that this is a rumor and not a fact. Even they prefer it to be someone japanese to play Shinji, and I agree. The only non-japanese cast member I can think they should have is Asuka. I can't remember if there were any other characters that were not Japanese. Of course, I try to forget about Evangelion anyway.

The question is, which is worse, the location of the series being substituted for America, or having the movie set in Japan and everybody speaks English.

It's not a rumor. A bunch of production sketches were in Newtype Japan about a month ago.

Harry Potter is all well in good I guess (I mean, he is a little kid and a boy, race doesn't matter... movie's probably going to be made 'nationless' just to pretend that gives it international appeal), but was Halley Joel Osmond on the crapper when the rumor got started? All he did in 'the Sixith Sense' was curl up, act scared, and cry... if that isn't the perfect Shinji I don't know what is (and it's not like the kid's agent knows how to say no either.. "WHOA! Jungle Book 2 AND Country Bears! I can't see what'd go wrong with those!")

I really don't like the Harry Potter kid. He seriously creeps me the hell out. Plus he's not a good actor. He's just kind of "there" and things happen around him.

I know the movie isn't a rumor, I'm talking about the rumor that the kid from Harry Potter will be Shinji.

I'd prefer Haley Joel Osment. I think he could do it.

I don't think it's Shinji but rather the people picked for the female characters that will make for the interesting casting rumors. Who are they going to find to stuff into those moulded plastic suits?

Hmmmm...no sir. I don't like it.
Ha ha ha! That's almost the exact same thing I did to Crispin Freeman like 4 years ago.

None of the characters in EVA look Japanese at all, so why do they need to be played by Japanese? Heck, you're going to have a hell of time finding a Japanese woman who even vaguely resembles someone like Ritsuko.

Shinji Ikari is a japanese character so he should be played by a japanese actor. It's as simple as that. The reason it won't happen is much more complex, but basically boils down to the fact that a Hollywood film will not have an Asian male lead unless he is a kungfu maniac. As for the characters not looking Asian, that's also a very interesting comment. If you have the time, please check out this link:

Anyone who is interested in the question of "why don't anime characters look japanese?" should check it out. Just scroll down to the image of Bart Simpson for some pretty enlightening reading (or read the whole thing).

I agree with you about that. It's not so much I think it has to be an all japanese cast, but I KNOW what is gonna happen if the cast is not japanese, and i don't want to hear everyone's whining and complaining.

It's a live-action film of probably the most often-debated anime series I can think of. Everyone's going to whine and complain no matter what. Buy your riot shields now, I can't imagine things getting any prettier from here on in.

It's the nerd condition. Despite a little thing called "acting" if the actor hired to play a role doesn't match the EXACT discription of the character in the original they'll pretend it's a great insult and will suck!
Remember Daredevil: "Micheal Clark Duncan?! He might be an academy award noninee but he's BLACK! Kingpin isn't black! He'll be terrible!" "Jennifer Garner isn't Greek! Depsite playing basically the same character every week on TV she'll make a bad Elektra... Elektra should be played by [some other actress who isn't Greek, but is likely the object of that nerd's masturbation fantasies]" "Bullseye isn't Irish!! Despite in foresite being the saving grace of the film he'll make the movie suck!"
And in the end most geeks turned face and decided Daredevil was better then Spider-mam. See! Dorks complain about anything and everything when the thing they've wasted their life on is changed from what they know to be safe and 'real' they get upset... I mean, if you gave up your chance to ever kiss a girl to watch cartoons about Giant Robots (which aren't really robots but 'angels' in containment suits) you'd be upset if someone in Hollywood decided an all Japanese cast was silly and cast Harry Potter as the main character (who some nerds will hate because Harry Potter is for kids! but most geeks hate Shinji anyway so you'd think that'd be moot)
On the opposite side of the coin, Ritsuko's hair is dyed blonde (not the Ken style eyebrows) so even if the cast was all Japanese a wig or dye makes her accurate to source.
[note: don't kill the messanger! I'm the biggest dork/nerd/geek on this board and I'm not afraid to admit is. But even I see the retardness in wanting an actor picked on race alone instead of talent]

I never denied I was, either. But the difference between us and the people doing the bitching is that we can function normally, for the most part, and seperate our hobbies from what's really important in life.
Well, most of us, anyway.

I know Ritsuko dyes her hair. I know more about Ritsuko than I probably want to... but even if she dyed it purple and dressed like Sailor Pluto she wouldn't look Japanese. :p
PS - Gendo should be played by Samuel L Jackson. :)

Christopher Lee is a good choice, but I think he might do better as a SEELE member than Fuyuski. That way Lee and Rickman can have glare contests...

That had to be the worst line I've heard from a major market movie. What made it worse was how cool they thought it was and had it in a bunch of the comercials.

I think they knew it was lame, BUT that it had the potential to become the next "talk to the hand" or "WASSSSSSSSSSSUP" (also very lame, but not sure if I should have used them... how about "Got any Cheeeeeese?" and "It's Not a Tumor!" instead?)
and since people who say "Where's the beef?!" aren't going to see the inspirational movie of the year, they put that awful line in commericals, making "Finding Forester" seem like an endeared part of pop-culture, but really people just like how stupid it sounds.
"You're the dog now, man!" would have been a great line to say in the failed "Two Stupid Dogs" cartoon.
