ftp://ftp.assembly.org/vod/2003-08-08_1930_LIVE_Access_denied.mpg 200mb video of Access denied live concert
The direct link didn't work for me, but opening their ftp in a browser ftp://ftp.assembly.org and then going to the /vod/ directory and then downloading 2003-08-08_1930_LIVE_Access_denied.mpg worked.
Ok this is a live concert from the Assembly event.
The video: For some reason at the beginning there is nearly 4 minutes of non the live performance. There is three and a half minutes of Assembly '03 logo with non-live music on top, then another Assembly TV logo, then an NVidia logo... The video suffers from a bunch of mpeg chirps.
Finally the live performance starts. You might want to just skip to this part unless you want to listen to the non-live music at the beginning. The band is called Axes Denied, or maybe Access Denied. They have average to good skill for a band that plays covers of video game music. But here these guys actually play some demo scene music too. That's in the subcaucles of fandom when a band plays demo scene music live at a computer event. Playing demo scene music live; a place where few tread, and rightfully a place where most shouldn't go, but this group does fine with the concept. Based on the guy's accent they are from...Europe. Actually, "Axes Denied is a project spawned in 2003 by Skyfix, a mainstream pop/rock group based in Oulu, Finland."
The video has a few labels put on the bottom telling the names and composers of songs they are playing. The first song it sounds like he says 'starting with the game senotu...ladies and gentlemen this is megaplan'??...but the video label just says "intro". I thought as I was listening, I liked that this band let the keyboardist play the lead over the guitarists. During a few songs I would have turned up the guitar though.
The next song they play is Space Debris by Capitain. Then they play International Karate by Ron Hubbard.
Yay! About 19:35 in is the Star Control 2 medley. I can express my reaction thus: *Bender from Futurama voice: AwWwWwee Yeahh!* Though this reaction just comes from recognizing the opening notes of the music and enjoying the fact that a favorite game's music it's being played live, and not from other things like the quality of the performance. But don't get me wrong, the band was relatively pretty good.
The songs in the SC2 medley start a little uptempo. First there's the SC2 Intro, then the Hyperspace song, then the Battle music, the Thraddash theme, the Yehat theme, and finally the Syreen theme.
So yeah it was kind of fun to listen to that music from a live band.
Next song from a classic demo 'Dope by wigit'??
Then one more song from the band, and then the video is back to the non-live electric music.
Worth downloading for SC2 fans to see a live performance if you have a high speed connection because it's so big. Or for people who want to see proof that a band played demo scene music live, or for demo scene fans to who will recognize some of the music.
"Everybody loves baklava! Crispier flakier crust!" Sig question> Which of these three wrote the music (not just sound effects) for Shinobi III: Masayuki Nagao; Hirofumi Murasaki; and/or Horihiko Akiyama?
