Yeah, I'll call it shooter as well since Exodus doesn't like the word "shmup" :)
For me, I'm more of a horizontal player. The hit area is usually bigger, but I like to see the side profile of the ship. Plus, viewtiful shots look prettier and more dramatic when viewed sideways.
Playing a lot of R-Type final now. I love the police ship Tropical Paradise a lot. The red powerup + ship speed level 1 = super concentrated lazer destructive beam. And the charge up homing trackers are great. The "ducky" series ships with legs are ugly but adorable :D

I love both. I love G Darius (horizontal) and Gigawing1 and Gunbird2 (vertical). AAaaah... R Type Final.... (cries). I REALLY need to buy a PS2 again.

R-Type Final looks to be the perfect shooter for me. I love customizing features... and I haven't heard of too many shmups doing that too often. I wish my shooter skills were decent though... I have a tendency to keep eating enemy fire.
I vote for vertical, myself... but it's close. I've had tons of fun with Gradius, Salamander and R-Type, but my all-time favorite shmup is a vertical one: Radiant Silvergun.
EDIT: Sorry I used the word "shmup"

Horizontal. Both are good however.

Horizontal. I feel more comfortable going horizontal because that's how I was pretty much raised. Plus, some of my all-time favorite shooters are horizontal like Area 88 and Aero Blasters. Still, both are good though.

Left, right, up, down... the real direction for shooters are the one where you fly directly into the screen. Nothing says entertainment like having to look at your avatar's exhaust and/or butt during the entire game.

I feel pretty much the same way since most of my favorite shooters are horizontal as well. I've grown rather found of DoDonPachi as of recent though, enough so to the point where I'm trying to reach the second loop. Has anyone here managed to do it?
Favorites: Area 88, Gradius III, Blazing Star, DoDonPachi, Ikaruga

Jesus...well I guess looking at Cotton's ass all day is OK, but when they start putting old crust guys on broom sticks I'm done with that kind of shooter!
Incidentally, for those with PCs, Cho Ren Sha 68K is the total shit, and it's free! Link Here

ESP Ra De and Guwange being my favorite shooters, yeah, I'll go vertical.
Anyway, what exactly is Gyruss?? (one of my old time favorites)

Stay the hell away from the Space Harrier series...
I like mine vertical, though I do play horizontal shmups too.

Rid Hershel Gyruss falls under err... looking at your ship's butt category? :) Same as Cotton and Space Harrier I guess. Didn't think of putting this as a choice in the poll, hehe.

I prefer horizontal, myself, but I think I voted vertical because I'm braindead.
That, and I don't like the term "shmup" much myself.

This is a hard question, and not enough categories.
I like Horizontal and Vertical. One of my favorite games that combine both are the Salamander games (aka Life Force). I also like Gradius and Tengai (Horz) and Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun (Vertical).
I also like the 3D shooters, like Starfox and the godly, must be worshipped Tempest 2000.

Since you like both Starfox and Gradius, have you ever played Solar Assault? It's a 3D Gradius from the Starfox perspective, it's a sit-down cabinet with a flight stick. Not the best game I've ever played, but it's a pretty fun novelty for Gradius fans...
