You can break any bad habit by sheer force of willpower. If it's an unconscious thing, though, that's a lot harder to do. Try negative reinforcement! Every time you catch yourself doing it, STAB YOURSELF IN THE NECK!
Okay, okay, that's not going to work. You could pinch yourself. Hard. Bite your tongue. Burn yourself with a lighter. That's a little extreme, but if you associate doing it with suffering, I think unconsciously you'd become a bit less likely to do it.
Well, it works with dogs and snapping their leash, anyway.
If you have a good enough reason to stop, that could work too. I quit smoking cold turkey. The reasons were all there.. it's bad for me, yeah. I knew that. I was ashamed of it, too... there were certain people I refused to let know about it or see me doing it, and I went to great lengths to hide the smell for a long-ass time. I only decided to knock it off when I fell in love with a girl who despised smoking.
Long story short, she broke my heart, but I still haven't started again. Quitting was excruciating, it sucked really, really, REALLY hard at first, but it was doable. And if you're dealing with a problem that's not a physical addiction, just something you unconsciously do, it should be even easier to undo, right?
I don't know, maybe that'll serve as inspiration for you. All I really know is how I did it... good luck, man.

quote: So my multitude of questions this time to all is: 1) have you ever had a bad habit you HAD to stop, 2) were you successful in stopping it, and 3) if so, how? I need some ideas...
And no I'm not gonna describe my habit. I will say it doesn't involve anything with pants.
Man, there's no telling. It's fine if you're embarrassed about this bad habit and don't want to talk about it, but the advice we can offer to help stop it will vary depending on how severe this problem is. I mean, there's "stop picking your nose" advice and there's "don't punch children anymore" advice. Again, don't tell us about it if you don't want, I'm just saying it would help to know what the problem is before we can try to help.
However, burning yourself or hitting yourself or whatever every time you do this "thing" will just make you look crazy... I wouldn't do that. Doing something every time you do this bad habit's definitely a solution... I just don't know what to tell you to do.
Eh, I suck at this. Someone else try.
 Oh boy! It's summertime!
