They announced this a while back, but I'm still waiting to see what the system looks like... UMD is a cool format and all, but the screen's pretty big, I'm going to have to assume this isn't going to be a pocket-sized system. 7.1 channel audio on a portable? Why? It just seems kind... well, excessive.
I don't know why 3D's necessary on a portable system, when half the GBA developers can't even do 2D right. Is it me or is there a disproportionately high number of hideously ugly games with muddy pre-rendered graphics rather than hand-drawn sprites? I was looking through a magazine a few days ago and damn, a lot of GBA games coming out are hideous.
Back to the topic at hand, though... if this thing has analog sticks, it's not fitting in anyone's pocket.
I am curious to see what Sony's doing, but I can't see this killing Game Boy off, or even knocking it out of first place like I'm sure they hope they can.

Ineed, it doesn't sound like it's going to be cheap. Still, the projected release date isn't until Winter of 2004 though, so by then (or whenever it ships for that matter) the components in the unit may be cheaper than they are now.

On a related note, does anyone know if any developers have signed on for the PSP yet? I don't remember hearing Sony anounce any, but considering how far away the projected launch date is Sony may not have said anything about it just yet. Just curious.

*shrug* The N-Gage is currently set to retail at $299, and the specs of it are a good deal less impressive than the PSP, so why not? I don't think "dumb" is the right adjective to describe Sony either. Any company that can mass produce two notoriously shoddy consoles and still maintain a majority of the gaming market probably isnt stupid :P Arrogant, definitely. Dumb, probably not.

hmm wierd some of it is over kill (7.1 sound on a portable?), some doesn't make the most sense.
so like 1-2 years after Microsoft will make a portable x-box with 3x these specs.
I want to get a Neo Pocket Color.
