"Cutey Fatty".. ha ha ha ha. As for Sazae, it looks to be a fan(??) made parody of Sazae-San... or something like that. It's weird, but I dunno, I think maybe Toilet Kids or Ai! Cho Aniki might top it... especially considering they were widely produced, and beings that this seemingly used licensed characters in situations they would absolutely never be in, I doubt it was... kind of like "Usagi" for PC Engine. Ha ha ha.

When did people start calling these cames shmups? I've been playing these types of games since everyone and there goldfish made one. Arcades picked them up a dime a dozen! And I never heard anyone call them shmups!!

I hate the shmup term myself, and don't use it. But it stands for "shoot 'em up", and you have the dirty British to blame for consolidating it into one word.
Anyway, this game was announced right after last year's E3. Guess everyone's taking notice of it now though, which is...good.
That damned thing has been in development so long, it's got to be either finished or cancelled.

Because 'space shooter' means Halo
I agree that I've been playing these games for years and never heard them called this. I think any terminology that ever was used was ruined by FPS games.

Bleh. Sorry, but that's generalizing the hell out of it... I don't know. It's kind of something I'd expect someone who doesn't really play games to say (I mean, someone who thinks Halo's the only good FPS). I like FPS games (and apparently you do too). I've been playing them ever since Wolf3D. "First person shooter" just about NEVER brings Halo to my mind (even though it's an awesome game that I've played over and over); actually, it makes me think of DOOM. I guess I'd think of those over-the-head scrolling shooting games like Total Carnage or 1942 as "shooters"... I'm not really sure what I'd call Contra and Metal Slug... Something like "action game" or "platformer" or something, I guess.......
