Well, I have reached the 3k mark, for a change I have thought to post something useful: The meanings that some video games characters name has. Note that these are based on the Romanji, If you look at the kanji for japanese names the meaning would differ; any corrections apreciated.

Ryu:
Word = japanese
Simple Translation: Dragon.

Ken:
1st Word = japanese
Simple Translation: Fist or Technique
2nd Word = english
Simple Translation: "Ser imcomprensible para uno", "Being Understandable to one".

Author comments: Since Ken is from the US and capsule computer used such neat English words for the name of their characters, I vote for the later.

Guile:
Word = english
Simple Translation: Clever, cunning.

Dan:
Word = japanese
Simple Translation: Bullet

Sakura:
Word = japanese
Simple Translation: Cherry Blossom Tree.

Guy:
Word = english
Simple Translation: Extraordinary person.

Author comments: The day to day use of the word degenerated it's meanning from extraordinary person to 'plain' person; I guess that there it was a time when everybody wanted to be called extraordinary...

Kagami:
Word = japanese
Simple Translation: Mirrior, reflection... Funny thing, Kyosuke hides under his mother's last name, rejecting the ichimonji.

Nekketsu:
Word = japanese
Simple Translation: Burning blood, hot blooded.... Hayato Nekketsu... Aghhhh KUUUNNIOOOO KUUUNNNNN!!!!!!.

Delgado:
Word = spanish
Simple Translation: slim

Author comments: I don't think that capcom wanted this meanning for Boman's last name, surely a coincidence.

Jin:
Word = japanese
Simple Translation: man

Kane:
Origin = english

Author comments: SURELY must be inspired in the word cane, after all that's the weapon of Billy Kane.

Bash:
Word = english
Simple Translation: Strong Blow (Fraco Bash was the guy)

Bob:
Word = english
Simple Translation: punch.

Author comments: This word has too many damn meannings; I only put the one that seemed more fitting to Bob Wilson...

Alfred:
Origin = greek
Simple Translation: Pacific.

Author comments: There is not an "Alfredo"/"Alfred" word in greek, but the word used in greek for pacific derivated on the name... With proper sources I could trace down almost every English and Spanish names, but I have not such things; I could only trace my name.

Kusanagi:
Word = japanese

Author comments: Taken from the name of a mythical sword called "Kusanagi no Tsurugi" something like "grass cutting sword". The amulet where Yagami's name is from is called "Yasakani no Magatama" and the mirrior from Chizuru is called "Yata no Kagami", I don't have the translation for either of them.

Maxima:
Word = spanish (Máxima)
Simple Translation: Somewhere between canon and law; it is my understanding that this word was given birth in the latin language.

Muchiko:
Word = japanese
Simple Translation: Whip girl. One of the several allias that the Brazil team has given to Whip (Dominatrix??? WHAT THE HELL!!)

Ignisu:
Word = japanese
Simple Translarion: Ignition.

Author comments: Funny fact, Ignis is called Ignisu in the japanese version, also I have been told that May Lee is called by her true name in the Korean version.

Zantetsu:
Word = japanese
Simple Translation: Steel Cut.

Author comments: Eiji used a few moves with the Zantetsu name on it, like the Zentetsu Ha and the Zantetsu Torouken.

Gai:
1st Word = japanese
Simple Translation: literally 'Outside', foreing.

2nd Word = english
Simple Translation: Unnecessary

Oni:
Word = Japanese
Simple Translation: Devil

Author comments: I first thought that this word meanning ogre, but after some research and a few bitch slaps by Amuro Rei I found out that the 'Oni' race are devils that look bizzare (the look like an ogre).

Sho:
Word = japanese
Simple translation: Masculine actitude.

Author comments: Another too many bloody meannings word -usual in japanese, I understand-

Cool post Toxico, and congrats!

It also means a personal rule that someone follows by own decision, usually it's a phrase like "always help those who need it". And it's also the feminine for "maximum", the adjective.
BTW, about the Latin thing, Russell's name in Gladiator was Maximo .

So, shoryuken would mean "macho dragon's punch (or technique)"?

Wasn't some Clock Tower (Ghost head?) main character's name "Sho" when she turned into a fierce character, capable of fighting enemies? If this ain't male chauvinism (that's how my dictionary translated machismo), I don't know what is.

Lemme add a few ones to explain why none of the versions for SF2 bosses is (logically) correct:

Vega:
Word = Spanish
Translation: according to the dictionary plain or valley. I thought it meant a place where vines are, a vineyard. Anyway, it's a rather common Spanish surname too, and this is why I guess it was originally supposed to be Vega's/Balrog's name, cuz he's Spanish.

Balrog:
Word = Runic? LOTR?
Meaning: A demon from Lord of the Rings as I (and all of you, I guess) know, although perhaps there's a previous use of the word somewhere. I have no idea. Anyway, Balrog is supposed to be a demon's (or similar) name, so that'd be the most appropriate for M.Bison/Vega.

So what happened? My guess is that that was thought to be the original name "distribution", but somehow, Balrog's & Vega's names got switched at some point. And then came the whole Bison/Tyson thing, and they rotated the 3 of them for the American version, thus recovering Vega (Spanish) what should've been his original name. That's why I always make an exception in their case and refer to them using their American names instead of the Japanese ones. Because Vega makes more sense in the Spanish guy than in the dictator.

1.- The word Sho has too many damn meanings.
2.- Shoryuken could be written in Kanji(?).

Where did you hear that?The greek word for "pacific" is "ειρήνη"(you propably can't view this and wouldn't know how it's pronnounced anyway,but it has no relation to "alfredo")

btw,thanks about the info on Yagami's name.
And congrats! ^_^

Yes, "sho" has about 10 meanings and the one used in "shoryuken" is written in kanji (although, once again, there are about 10 kanjis that can be written that mean "sho" depending on the situation. In this particular case, it means "raised, rising". And "ken" can mean anything from attack to fist to sword to thrust.

Needless to say, Japanese is a frustratingly difficult language to learn (right up there with English).

Think of this: Rose is Italian. Rose is M.Bison-US/Vega-Jpn 's good site split off so that he could be more powerful. With these specific Capcom facts, we could assume that Vega was supposed to be Italian. They never have officially commented on his race...

BTW, where's the story about Rose being Bison's part told? I always found hard to understand the SFA story... and is it in the japanese version? sometimes I think that the story in the US versions of the games is full of translation mistakes...
