Every time I see something like this, I silenty ask: Why doesn't anyone try to cheat smart?
Look, I have nothing against hacks or cheats, but in an online game, there are a whole lot of other players, and most of them won't like anyone having an unfair advantage over them (to say nothing of the usual nutcases who are maniacally opposed to the very existence of cheats on principle). I'd think that the logical thing to do is avoid drawing attention to yourself. I.e., don't PK, don't flout your ill-gotten advantages, don't brag, and in general spend as much time away from other people as possible. How about taking on some really dangerous quests or tackling super-powerful monsters most players won't even touch? Now there's a way to avoid trouble, and you profit from your enhanced attributes. Simple as pie.
Altering the very world...well, it's a neat trick, but these folks' names are most likely mud wherever they go from now on. It's a shame that some people, even when there's no way to avoid getting caught, can't show any restraint.

First off, if you think I'm insane for not liking to use cheats, that's fine. I don't mind the fact that cheats exist, I just don't ever use them because they suck ALL the challenge out of a game. Anyway, back on topic...
I don't think these people were cheating to flaunt their "ill-gotten advantages" and all that... they just wanted to kill everyone in the game. Not so they'd be the best players out there; they just wanted to unleash Hell in the game. That's it. It's like getting to play God and deciding to make everyone suffer. I thought this hack sounded cooler than the hackers that make their own character invincible. It was something new and without purpose. Again, it would suck to be the victims, but at least they were restored to their status before the attacks. It would have been interesting to see, I think....

i also frown down on cheating, but that's besides the point. the madness that those hackers stirred up in that world is something new, and enormous, and completely insane. instead of granting themselves godlike status, or gorging in riches and rare items, they set the world around them on fire. they made peoples' valuables disappear, they sunk an entire city, they let loose berserked demons, and they made cityguards kill the very population they were set to protect. if Shadowbane is like any other MMORPG, i can just imagine how serious most of the players take the game. and simply imagining them watching their world fall apart makes me burst out in laughter
how this thread strayed off the topic of hilarity into this wacky discussion on cheating, i do not know. but, it's been said that those who encourage cheating are also prone to writing cheap fanfics about video game characters that no one reads. well, wait. i read them. they make me laugh, chump. and laugh and laugh ...

That's what I'm saying. It sounded like it would have been cool to see. (Like I've said before) It would suck to be one of those people who like playing the game, but at least they got their stuff back when it was all over.
