quote: Has anyone here actually played the game ? The marketing scheme is geared towards gamers who think they're "hardcore". It's funny when you load up the page =)
It looks VERY interesting, but at the same time if it sucks, it sucks. I bought Breath of Fire V even though it didn't get the best reviews. However I am currently really enjoying the game, even though it's insanely hard.
Anyone play BOFV or U.Saga? Any opinions ?
Yeah, they also mentioned it was overly difficult. The problem though is what their definition of 'difficult' is. People say that Persona and Tactics Ogre:LuCT are hard, but that's just because they don't know how to use the system. However I'm guessing it's more "you just didn't spend 4 hours leveling up" difficult. Marketing towards the hardcore crowd kinda sounds like they know the average Joe won't like it and they have to challenge RPG fanatics like their honor is at stake if they don't beat it. I fell into that trap before so I think I know what they're doing.
And yeah, JJJ I totally agree that a lot of times reviewers are full of bull. I don't trust PC reviews anymore after they all said how great Black & White was, when it was totally clear that they didn't get to the bug crippled 4th level. However I've been totally burned on the mediocre Saga series twice and I'd be the first to want this game to turn it around. However they should look at the Gameboy Saga (which were simple and fun) as opposed to the newer ones that try to do new, wacky, but ultimately unfun things.

The fairy colony is the single most important part of Dragon Quarter, you can make tons of money there, and you can find some of the best weapons in the game, and if you manage to dig to the very end of the colony...well...
Spoiler (Highlight to view) - You find a bonus dungeon where your levels get reset to Lv1!
End of Spoiler
quote: Does it get boring, or is there a real insentive to keep crawling? I really like these types of games when there's a point to going into the dungeon other than just getting more money to buy better weapons to beat slightly better monsters and then repeat ad nauseum. My favorites of this genre are Dark Cloud and Azure Dreams if your played either of them.
BoFV:DQ is ONE GIANT dungeon (with some tiny towns in the middle of it), your only purpose in the game is to get the hell oughtta there and reach the sky!
DQ is merciless; the only way you can restore your HP is with items, no inns, no magic, and even if the characters rest in the story your HP still doesn't get restored!
And I need to mention that DQ is very linear...very very linear! You can however replay/restart the game to get more bits of the story, gain access to new areas, and of course, to get better Ratios! The best I got was 1024...

Yea... I wholeheartedly recommend Dragon Quarter as well. The only thing is that in order to really understand the story, you have to play it at least twice, but probably more. As you play it over and over, new scenes are unlocked in the story (conveniently tagged on the bottom of the screen, you can skip cinemas but it'll stop for something you haven't seen before).
It is one big Dungeon crawl, but the environments are pretty interesting for it being all underground. There are only three characters, but all of them have purposes in the game and it's balanced so that you have to understand them all in order to really progress in the game.
The Fairy thing is fun but quite complicated, and I haven't seen anything very profitable in it yet, but I'm not TOO far in the game. Whoever said this game was short is an idiot, it's actually pretty long.
A question... I died in the very beginning of the game and did Sol Restart, does that make the restarted game harder ? Thanks !

And I think I'm actually one of the few people that liked SGF2. Despite the fact that some battles were downright impossible and getting stuck was a common thing, I really liked the story and presentation of it, and the battle engine had its good points.
Saga Frontier 2 is a love hate relationship for me. There are just so many mega-flaws in the game (who's the wise guy who came up with putting a monster that does like 1000 damage to all party members and has 21793470 hp out the wazoo in one of the earliest dungeouns in the game?) and yet there's something about the storyline, presentation (music, graphics, storyline, storyline format) and such that draws me to it. And the level-up system is cool, even though it kinda doesn't really matter until the end for certain storyline reasons (basically, let's just say time levelling up nearly every character but a select few will be a waste at the end of the game, which is when the game is hardest). I kinda have a love hate thing for the game, myself. There are lots of aspects I love, and lots of aspects I... well, not actually hate so much as wonder what the heck the programmers were smoking. They actually don't detract from the game too much for me, but they do stuff like make me wonder if the game was even finished or if the programmers were on crack and not in a good way. Things like the aforementioned griphon, semi-important characters poofing with no explanation (Some argue that the game's story is meant to focus on the global aspect of things, not individual characters, but I still think not mentioning what happened to Marie, Leslie, Phillipe, and even Eleanor is really REALLY REALLY stupid), the final dungeoun (and in conjunction with that, the ludicrously tough final boss) basically literally killing your entire saved game if you aren't prepared for it, and my absolute favorite, the Battle of South Moundtop.
...bwahahahaha, the Battle of South Moundtop is something else. I'd wonder if I was dreaming, since I can't imagine what would make someone so EVIL as to create such a battle to make a player suffer through. But then I tried to play through it again and yep, still as insane as ever. Especially when compared to the other three army vs army battles in the game (two where you'd have to try to lose, and one that's so ludicrously easy that even if you DO try to lose, you practically can't).

Any tips ? I'm really trying to hold on to my party experience..... but I only have like 5000 now...
Er, that IS spoiling it! But anyway, that's not really early in the game...that's more like half-way through! Remember, this is a game you can finish in less than 8 hours (which you have to do, in order to get the best D.Ratio)
You should keep going as far as you can, get really good weapons, build up the fairy colony as it would be readily available when you restart, and use your part exp to balance the levels of the party members.
The final few boss battles were some of the best and most interesting I've had ever!

quote: Did anyone play the SaGa games on the super famicom? where they as hard as the playstation ones?
I just got Square spam asking if i was hardcore enough to play SaGa2. Hardcore is too little of a word, a word like masochist is better.
But i'll try it out anyway.
Edit:GRAMMeR MONSTEAR EAT
Don't know if it'll be of any help, but I tried Romancing Saga 3 a little, and it seemed a great game. Unlike SF2, in this game there's only one story (well, you know what I mean) and 8 playable characters. The funny thing is that you can choose any of them as the main character and you play as him through all the game, seeing only his side of the story. So to beat the whole game you had to replay it 8 times. And, as far as I saw, it differs a lot from some characters to others. For example, if you choose the "standard RPG main character" it's quite similar to a normal RPG, but if you choose playing as the king, you have a lot more of tactical army battles. And yup, it was difficult, specially army battles (for me, I'm definitely no good at strategies/tactics) and earning money, since almost no battle gives it, and when you get it it's only a very small amount. I got to the first town and I wasn't able to buy anything. Guess RS2 is similar...
PS: Only a post in so much days... x_x @#$%& examns!

AAAAARGH! That spoonin' battle is still the reason I hadn't finished the game!
*is considering retrying...*
A little tip, sorta. Not that it'll help too much (that battle is just too hard) but I found it quicker to just try to actually kill the boss unit rather than last the 8 turns (you have to last till the end of the enemy's turn on turn 8, by the way). Note: Not EASIER, but quicker. Which is important. Because when you have to retry the same EVIL battle 100 times over, it goes by so much faster if each try takes one minute instead of five or so.
There's a FAQ at Gamefaqs for how to kill the boss unit. Actually, I've actually beaten this battle on my first try by accident by doing that (though I knew it was a fluke back then, and after retrying that battle, I even more "appreciate" how hard the evil EVIL thing is).
To this day, I think my win loss record for that battle is 3 wins (one lasting the 8 turns, two killing the boss including the first time I beat the game) and about 25 or so losses, but I've been lucky :P Actually, the battle's kind of entertaining when you're playing it just to goof off (usually optionally using the "Semi-New Game +" mode, as opposed to playing it to beat the game, which is sadly the torture every SF2 player who wants to beat the game will have to endure). All the fun of praying that your soldiers will win without the frustration from the fact that they'll most likely lose.
