I think CFAS has a very nice amount of variety, especially compared to the "9 out of 12 original SF2 chars" variety the Capcom side has in SvC so far. High amount of variety, with SFA (Nash), SF2 (Ryu and Chun), SF3 (Alex), RS (Batsu and Akira), Strider (duh), and even Final Fight (Haggar and Poison). Oh, and three new characters for some very strange reason. The problem with CFAS's cast so far IMHO is just that it's so SMALL. When someone mentions the word All-Stars (or dream match, for that matter), it makes one dream up of a huge roster, or at the very least, one that can match up to non All-Star games. CFAS's roster as it was is beaten in size by the likes of non-All-Star games like SFA3, SF3, any KOF game, Guilty Gear XX, and (since the game is 3D) any Tekken, Rival Schools, Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive 3, and Virtual Fighter 3 and beyond. Basically EVERY recent fighting game besides a select few (of which only MOTW comes to my mind). Which, for a game labelled All-Stars, is kinda pathetic, I think. From a marketting perspective (and many other perspectives as well, really), this is further confounded by the fact that pretty much all other dream match games have a much bigger cast than CFAS yet still managed to (generally) be good games (Dream match KOFs, MvC, CvS, Tekken Tag, and now SvC).
To those that would argue for quantity over quality, I'm sorry, but I HIGHLY doubt that 'even with such a small cast' (though I really don't think cast size makes much of a difference when it comes to quality if the company is competent) CFAS would be able to significantly surpass the quality of VF4, Tekken 4, SC2, or DoA3, all of which have quite a larger roster. At least, not with the latest reports about it.

quote: Well, I'm not ruling out that it could have been cancelled; really, anything is possible. But let's review the evidence:
Evidence it was cancelled: A. German online gaming news site, craving attention, said it was cancelled. Later proved wrong by direct e-mails to Capcom Japan.
B. A guy from Capcom USA says it was, along with a lot of other suspicious stuff.
Don't forget C: It's a Capcom game and it's coming out very soon, but yet, no screenshots or trailers for the game have been released in several months. That's the absolute reverse of Capcom's usual marketing strategy, which is to release more and more screenshots and trailers in the months up until the game's release to generate interest in it. It's also the usual sign from almost any game company that a game is internally cancelled, but hasn't been publicly cancelled yet. Worse, it's the way that almost every piss-poor game that's trying to avoid negative buzz is released, like Batman: Dark Tomorrow, Enter the Matrix, and probably Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness.
I'm not saying that it's cancelled or that it's going to suck, but something is very, very weird about the way this game is being handled, even for a game that has supposedly been reworked. Even games that are trying to keep a secret, such as MGS2 and Enter the Matrix, get some small amount of promotion before their release. Capcom Fighting All-Stars hasn't. We have heard NOTHING about this game for months and that is very odd.

We haven't heard anything about Read Dead Revolver, Resident Evil Online, or Ghouls and Ghosts online for a while, either. Do you think they're all cancelled, too?
Some new Red Dead Revolver screenshots were released May 7th, and Resident Evil Online has been renamed "Resident Evil Outbreak" and new screenshots for it have been released more than once a week for the past month or so. Here, take a look at Wednesday's new screenshots before you take a look at the screenshots from the week before that.
And yeah, I do kinda wonder if Ghouls & Ghosts Online is cancelled, since Capcom's marketing style tends more toward releasing any screenshots that they can (EVEN IF THEY'RE BULLSHIT!), but Ghouls & Ghosts Online isn't supposed to come out very, very soon, so it's not as likely. CFAS, on the other hand, is coming out before Red Dead Revolver, Resident Evil Online, and Ghouls & Ghosts Online, and yet, no screenshots have been released for it in months. You don't find that odd, given the way the company's other games are handled?

Didn't you people read my Red Dead Revolver thread???? Apparently not.
To save you some of the trouble... I'm not bothering looking up the GameSpot article again, but check this out.
And aside from the fact that G&G online is being developed OUTSIDE CAPCOM, it's incredibly early in development. Sometimes you don't get the first details of a game until it's been in development for A YEAR.
Even so, there are MOVIES and screens of this title released as recently as MARCH. Which, by the way, were released by Game Factory at GDC 2003... NOT CAPCOM!
The bottom line is that even if no screens or movies are released that doens't mean that a company (Capcom in this case) has cancelled a title.
Has Capcom USA mentioned Killer 7 at all on their website? No. Is it on their E3 website? No. BUT, it was shown in video form at E3... which probably nobody here was aware of. It's also in their E3 product catalog.
So, unless you translate a press release that says "X title is being cancelled", note that the game is still present on Capcom's J-webpage, realize that you don't work for Capcom and that each title is handled on an individual basis.
I don't have the time or the willpower to educate this thread any further... so I'll just advise those of you that are behind the class that it's imperative you do your homework if you want to participate in the discussion!

So, let me get this straight. We've established that Capcom releases loads of screenshots and movies for their new games, including games that are very early in development like Resident Evil 4 and obvious niche titles like Red Dead Revolver and Killer 7. We've also established that the only game that we could find other than CFAS that they haven't released tons of screenshots and movies for is "being developed OUTSIDE CAPCOM." And yet, my very simple assertion that CFAS's lack of promotion ahead of its upcoming release is "odd" is somehow baseless?
Sorry about the Ghouls & Ghosts Online bit, though. I meant to edit my post to say that the only reason that I thought it might be cancelled was because of the "eight unnamed cancelled games" news, and not because of a lack of screenshots and movies for a game that is at least a year away from being released, but I didn't get a chance to.
And yes, people were aware of the Killer 7 thing. I remember hearing something about it in the wild din of gaming news that came during E3, but no one really made a big deal out of it. They were too busy paying attention to Viewtiful Joe.

I want to talk about the "small cast" for a bit.
1. In the Character Select Screen, there are 2 empty slots, and a Random slot, so at the very least, we are getting two extra characters. One of them maybe the DEATH character that's in the Intro and he maybe the Boss or a Boss in the Game. Also, via code/trick, the character Select Screen is not so jam packed that extra slots can't be added for secret characters, if and if the character select screen has not been completly revamped. WHOA, that's a lot of maybes...
2. Capcom is known for having extra characters "time released" in the Arcades. The longer the machine stays on, the more characters pop up.
3. They are also known for adding extra characters to the home versions of the Games.
So right now, I hardly believe the Cast will remain at twelve. Capcom gets an insane amount of props since no one still knows who are the two hidden characters and in this day of leaks everywhere that's unheard of. You may say that's due to general lack of interest in the game, but I'd like to think otherwise. Capcom's gotten really good at maintaining secrets. It's known that they are working on a new Street Fighter Game and a New vs. Game, and we still don't know if it's SF4, SF2.5, SF3.5, and if the vs. Game is Marvel vs. DC, Marvel vs. DC vs. Capcom, and so on.
Of course, they may have secretly added the two characters in CFAS during this time that it's being overworked.
