Gameforms, after going over the trailers and promotional material for Snake Eater, has posted a preview of the game on their site. Most of it covers either what we already know or have already put together, like hiding in trees, using specific camouflage to disappear, eating animals to survive, using animals against enemies, etc. In fact, very little of it is of interest... except for one thing. After noting that the game's trailer is filled with Soviet imagery, has the year 1963 highlighted in one shot, mentions "going back to the beginning", and seems to feature military hardware from the 1960s, they theorized that Solid Snake may not actually be the main character.
"Whether the game’s hero is in fact Solid Snake is not clear. The trailer, along with Konami’s web page and promotional pamphlets for the game, contain numerous references to the 1960s. Kojima hasn’t given a clear answer when asked if this is when the game takes place, but if it is set in the 60s, the hero is most likely Solid Snake’s father, Big Boss. We’ll refer to the hero as “Snake” for purposes of this preview."
Now, I'm not going to get my hopes up, because fan conjecture can often create better ideas than what will actually appear in the final product, but wouldn't that be a cool idea? That would (possibly) put Revolver Ocelot, Gurlukovich, Grey Fox, Roy Campbell, and maybe even Master Miller in the game, and all of them as active soldiers, while removing Raiden, Olga, "Liquid Ocelot" (as I call him), and all of the other characters that I don't have much interest in, with the exceptions of Otacon and Meryl. Sure, prequels aren't usually very good, but then again, if anyone can half-ass their way out of a restrictive and abstract plot, it's Hideo Kojima. I have great faith in his powers of infinite bullshit and the uncanny way that they can twist our suspension of disbelief.
It would also sort of explain why Snake's tactics are different. In the Snake Eater trailer, he's decided to slit people's throats instead of choking them, and he's also apparently grown fond of Solidus' "I'm going to stand right here out in the open and kill you all" idea of Tactical Espionage Action.
Also, Konami recently released this trailer for Twin Snakes, which is in the ungodly ASF/ASX format, is way too long for streaming media, and in my opinion is sort of disappointing. Granted, the video is sort of blurry, but it appears that the graphics really aren't that great. Rather than looking like a huge graphical leap from the original, a lot of the scenes with the characters talking to each other look like they've just been upgraded from graphically inadequate blocks to graphically inadequate round shapes. The only things that I liked about the video were that they put the first person view from MGS2 in the game, which was supposed to be in MGS1 before the game came out but was removed for some incredibly idiotic reason, and the new version of the ninja's first appearance. The new version is ultra gory and generally cool, but lacks the "What the Hell was that thing?" factor that the original scene had. At least the dialogue was sort of neat.

quote: The 1960's? Huh? I swear, Kojima and company manage to generate the hype and whacked out conspiracy theories that other companies can only dream of. Since people are pulling off some amazing intuitive leaps with only a few obscure bits of data to go on I think I'll do the same. Since one of the lines flashed in the trailer is EAT OR BE EATEN I'm going to assume that means that Snake will no longer be able to drag bodies but will instead have to eat anybody he kills to avoid having the body be detected. I don't know how Snake could eat an entire person in one sitting [he can really pack it away] but with the amount of time it takes to consume a guy you have to be very careful where you nail someone so you're not left out in the open while snacking. That, or the reference to cannibalism could signal the long awaited MGS/RE crossover that nobody expected.
In defense of my insane conjecture, I'd just like to note that when the trailer for something has "1963" splashed across it and has tons of symbols of the Cold War, such as half of the main character in American colors and the other half in Soviet Union colors, as well as military hardware from the 1960s, I don't usually think, "Hey, I bet that takes place in the FUTURE! I wonder if they have androids yet?" or "Yeah, yeah, feudal Japan's a great place to set a story like that." Granted, the MGS games have a habit of walking like a duck, quacking like a duck, and then being an effeminate young man with an annoying girlfriend and a backstory that's less interesting than watching paint dry, but it's possible that this could be the plot and all I'm saying is that it would make an interesting game if it were true.

The Snake Eater site is now up. Its tag line is "New Setting x New Era x New Gameplay --> MGS" and the site is divided up into "1961", "1962", "1963", and "1964". It contains little tag lines like "New Era, The Cold War", "Back To The Origin, Nuclear Arms Race, Space Development Race", and "Cold War Structure, Espionage Warfare". And apparently I didn't know my history as well as I thought I did, because I missed one of the major events of 1961: "Harry Gregson-Williams is born" (there are similar jokes for all of the years).
