This week's issue of Entertainment Weekly [the one with a cover story on the new X-Men movie] for some reason decided to count down it's choices for the top 100 videogames ever. It always amuses me when a more mainstream publication like EW does something you would expect out of a more niche magazine like EGM, although it's doubtful EGM would have an article about the experience one of their reporters playing Def Jam Vendetta against Method Man or include the factoid that Julia Roberts plays Halo. Who knew?

I wanna rent Def Jam Vendetta one of these times. Method Man and Redman are the shizzy! ^_^

What games were featured? Kingdom Hearts? Ratchet and Clank? Sly Cooper? CvS2? O_O Which? I wanna know.

I'd also wager that 90% of the games they mention are crap or "mediocre", as the case usually is. They should call these "100 most POPULAR games", as opposed to "best'.

Actually I had a chance to look at the list, and it's not as bad as one would expect. Stuff like Samurai Showdown, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Super Puzzle Fighter, and the first Contra made the list. The highest ranking fighter was a 2-D one (Street Fighter 2), and the top game was A link to the Past. It also had DDR too, and it had "the late, great dreamcast" written in the Soul Calibur write up. So they did get somebody with some game knowhow to write up the list.

Not that it's without it's curious choices, and it is heavily NA-centered (FFVII is the only Final Fantasy game, and no Enix one). But as a whole I can't quibble with the way it's laid out, even if I disagre with some of it...

The fact that Mortal Kombat II made the list made me wanna vomit.

The fact that Mortal Kombat II made the list in a higher place than Samurai Shodown made me wanna kill.

The fact that Samurai Shodown was the only Neo-Geo game on the list makes me wanna blow stuff up.

The fact that System Shock 2, Dark Cloud 2, or Metroid are nowhere to be found makes me want to annihilate every stupid fuck on the planet.

EW presents: 100 games our staff recognized the names of, or their kids told them to put in.
