Correct. "Trigun", the manga came first, then "Trigun Maximum" started in a different magazine (because the one "Trigun" was in stopped publication? Not sure).
I'm not sure if the anime started before "Trigun Maximum" started or after, but the manga is still going.

Is Trigun Maximum still running in Young King Ours? I'm surprised.. know of any places to read new story summaries? The anime runs through Trigun and Trigun Maximum, and I know there are a good deal of differences between the anime and the manga... which I'd go in detail about, but the spoiler tag doesn't appear to be working for me.

Trigun the manga came before the anime and is quite different in quailty from the TV series.
It is bad. Trust me.
Trigun Maximum manga is a continuation of Trigun the manga and is quite different in quailty from the TV series.
It is goodly. Well, at least from the sypnosi I've read. Something about Black Vash, a paralysed Legato and Hopperd's blind love.
Sypnosi? There's a page on the anipike with them. Probaly one of the first listed Trigun pages. The webmistress is some Japanese lady with a softspot for Wolfwood and midvalley the Hornfreak. Her site is easily the most infomative Trigun-centric on on the web.
