Really, it isn't hard to see it from the "dumbass" point of view. The phrase is really only known by people like us (less than you'd think), and they decided to display the message during wartime.
I was going to say something in defense of the youths, but then I'd be defending the idea of acting like a jackass for no reason (and without penalty) on April 1st, which I despise. I mean, I can see how they didn't think it would cause this kind of reaction since they (and most likely people they knew) were familiar with the joke. But there wasn't any reasoning for doing this other than "It's April 1st, time to do something dumb."
Did I mention I hate the "practice" of April Fools Day?
