Due to the War in Iraq, A Toronto Radio Station has stopped play of the following songs...

Revolution - The Beatles
Give Peace a Chance - John Lennon
Live and Let Die - Paul McCartney

And some Cher song...

I dunno about you, but banning that McCartney song will show Specter that we mean business!

I hate the Beatles and all, but banning their hippie revolution songs is a bit strict. It's as bad as re-naming french fries "Freedom Fries."

Before everyone jumps on me though, the reason why I hate the Beatles is that every song they've ever made has been SO run into the ground by every known radio station and advertiser on the face of the Earth, that any time I hear their songs, I can't help but thinking of new Volkswagen Bugs and Starbucks coffee and whatever else their songs have been played to endorse. Not to mention the fact that everyone is expected to think that the Beatles are the greatest band ever...

Okay, I'm rambling now. I'll shut up.

Man.... will that "Freedom Fries" thing ever die? I'm ashamed to admit that little bit of stupidity came from my home state....

You're definitely not the only person who has a strong distaste for the Beatles. They're one of three bands that will immediate put me in a bad mood. Most of this comes from their role in the creation of the modern music industry and all of it's money grubbing, mp3 hating glory. To be fair they probably didn't realize it at the time, and if they didn't do it, another group would have more than likely taken their place. Still, they're responsible for their actions just like the rest of us, and I can't entirely forgive the damage they've done.

Whew.... this is getting a bit off topic.... Hope I haven't offended anyone.

"Freedom Fries" , posted Sat 29 Mar 03:34post reply

They did the Freedom Fries thing a long time ago in the Netherlands. I don't even remember for what war it was, heh.

But anyway, we have fries here but call it patat. We basically put all kinds of sauces on them. There's one kind that's called "war fries" (dutch: patat oorlog) and they wanted to change that to "party fries" (dutch: patat feest). It was no succes, and right now they are still called war fries. The sauce thats on them is mayonaise + sateh :) Isn't it disgusting?

btw, it's my favourite way to eat fries

The funny thing is Freedom Fries and Freedom Toast didn't come from France at all....:P

Beeing a big Beatles fan I'm going to have to respond here....

I think you got your music time frames mixed up here. IIRC the music industry really became commercialized in the mid to late 70's when you had bands like Chicago and Fleetwood Mac hit it big (And the followed through to the 80's with Micheal Jackson). That's when you really start to notice that all the pop and rock music released on major labels started to sound the same. And that's when Radio started to become bland and repetive....

If anything the Beatles had an opposite effect on the industry, especially around the Rubber Soul/Revolver/Sgt. Peppers period where they really started to experiment musically.

Without them blazing trails the Rolling Stones probably wouldn't have been as big, nor would the Who had as much success. Nor would we have had the early starts of Heavy Metal and Punk. And who knows if Dylan's experiments in Rock would of been as accepeted without the Beatles. Not to mention we wouldn't have the album that merged high art concept with Rock (Sgt. Peppers). We'd still be listening to Elvis rock...(Which, while good is not as good as the stuff from the 60's and early 70's).

So no, they aren't responsible for the current evil in the industry. Because if the industry was following that model we'd see alot more diversity in the major pop releases.

Instead it's the all mighty dollar that's really responsible for the crud in the industry, as people look to cash in on fads instead of devloping new an unique music.

Banning anything out of the fear of hypersensitive nutbags is the highest form of stupidity in existence. Then again, if it prevents Cher from getting airplay, that's fine by me.

As for the whole freedom food thing, don't any of these morons realize that french fries have nothing to do with France? Our local IHOP has begun advertising their "freedom toast". <sigh>

I'd like to point out here that the Beatles themselves haven't commercialized their songs. That honor goes to Micheal Jackson, who bought up the rights to their songs in the mid 80's and then proceded to exploit them in every possible way.

It's why Micheal Jackson is hated by many classic Rock fans, and is probably the only way he stays afloat given that his records suck...

I will give them credit for being influential and all of that, but that still won't make me respect them for more than that. I don't care who's responsible for whoring their music out. I still don't like them. The Beatles have become a huge cliche to me, just like Star Wars, Star Trek, and Elvis. I don't care if they wanted their music whored out or not; it still happened. I'm just glad to hear that I'm not the only one that doesn't like the Beatles.

Being a fan of the Beatles, it rather disturbs me to see all the hatred for them. They're one of the few "commercialized" bands (albiet beyond their control) that actually have a huge chunk of underlying quality, which is what made it stay popular after they grew out of their boy band phase.

Regardless, I don't have if its fuckin' N'Sync. Censorship for all the sensitive pieces of shit is lame, and goes against the very meaning of freedom.
