I was thinking of doing this thread sooner or later, and now I have the perfect excuse with the previous av and tag threads. So, what does your nickname mean? Where does it come from? Why did you choose it? etc?

Mine is (too?) simple: I'm a novice on all this Internet thing, a very basic user, so I'm registered in very few places, and now I put this nick, now this other one.... so when I wanted to join here I found myself without a fix nick, and that's how I named myself: "Without nick".
I wrote it in Spanish, joining the 2 words and taking out the 'k': Sin nick -> Sinnic. but someone else already had this one, so I wrote it in Catalan: Sense nick -> Sensenic.
Et voilą!

Wow... now it makes sense. I've had this name in my head since the days of the original Monster Rancher on PSX. I had the zombie monster, and I named it Undead Fred. I had been thinking of good zombie names then, and that was one of the ones I came up with. I'm really into zombies (if you haven't guessed), and the name stuck. I've been using the name online since then.

Initials, it's as boring as that.
As for "NeoGouki", my alter ago, it's a sad combination of Gouki being the first IRC nick I ever took, and the evolvement to "NeoGouki" when I started hanging out in the EFNet channel #neo-geo (which doesn't exist anymore I believe).

The official japanese romanization for the name of the Tales of Eternia main character. Now I've started to use "Viewtiful Rid" in some places too, you can guess why.

What's with these threads anyway? soon somebody will be asking our credit card numbers and passwords :P

So my name is Luis. But whem I'm 'superpowered' I become 'Luisinan.' Something like that. What I do now is whenever I have to register a nickname, I use the name "Ramberk" and add a second word that is related to the site or game or whatever. On a transformers forum I have the nick "Ramberk Magnus." I do this so that people from multiple forums can recognize me. Something like that.

In 1999 I first surfed the 'net. I badly needed to create an E-mail account but I hadn't thought of a nick. My turn to use the computer was almost over so I was in a hurry and I wrote Macondo which is the name of a town in the INCREDIBLE novel 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It turned out that the nick was taken, so I changed the "C" for a "K" (it sounds identical in Spanish) to discover that was also taken. Fed up, I wrote in the nick box "Makondo99" (for the year) and thus I had my first E-mail account and a nick I haven't bothered to change so far (and probably never will)

Looong loong story.

Pre-1993: My brother starts calling me "Video Man" because I can learn new games pretty fast (or so he says). I didn't have much of a problem with that (hey, I was less than 13 then).

1993: Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana) is released, and its time to put a name to the main character. "VideoMan" doesn't fit in six letters, so I end up putting "V.Man". I ended up liking the game so much (and I still do) that I based the VMan character after Randi (plus some Saint Seiya/Street Fighter/whatever-based modifications), and changed the name to "Video Man, Knight of Mana", using "V. Man of Mana" as an acronym.

Circa 1995: Eventually, I found the "ideo" part to be way too corny, so I got rid of it ending up with "VMan of Mana". I often use the name "VManOfMana" for those places where spaces are not allowed in names (like IRC).

Since then, everywhere I put a nick it is either "VMan of Mana" or "VManOfMana".

DKW = my initials.

Rationale: I've been entering them for decades on innumerable video games. It's a pretty convenient shorthand to me, and I'm not all that good in making up usernames, so that's what I went with.

What's that? Boring? Conventional? No spice, drama, or weirdness? Welcome to my world.

a few years back, i discovered infantry. it was also around the same time i discovered kmfdm

two + two = four

so i played a lot of kmfdm while fighting fools in infantry. one day, while flying around on a deathboard (the most fucking awesome thing ever created ... EVER), and (you guessed it) Juke Joint Jezebel was blaring on winamp. and so it began

i've changed my nick a few times since then, but my old infantry buddies still call me "juke" or "jjj." it just stuck

but in a way, you guys are lucky. there is another nick i wanted to use here. my account probably would've been deleted .. but anyways, i wasn't too well-known in infantry as Juke Joint Jezebel. i think it's because i always used that alias just to goof around. but when a soft jelly rubber dildo came parading through town, i got respect. who knows. peoples' infatuation with sex toys. i'll never understand it

Well, there are a number of reasons for mine....

1) It's easy to remember. Mog is actually my "junk" account name. Originally I didn't plan on staying here long, so I signed up with that name. Things have clearly changed since I'm still here.

2) I don't like the look of my initials, and all of my given nics suck.

3) I'm terrible at coming up with names. My role-playing friends in particular know the pain of this one.

So there you go.

Hmm... mine is Rugal Bernstein, of KOF villainy fame, obviously. When I started here, I had originally planned on it being either "Brawshella" or "Dracula_Hyakushaku", but the board was really fighting game centric back then, so I went with a fighting game villain. ^_^

Dude... holy crap. I remember you from DALnet #square. I had no clue you came to the boards here.

Anyway, my nickname story is pretty simple... it's Grave for the main character of Gungrave. Not an excellent game, no, but Yasuhiro Nightow has a way of making incredibly slick storylines with awesome characters and tons and tons of gunfighting. I enjoy the game far more than I probably should, and I wish it just had more and longer of a plot.

Gungrave gets an unfair rap, anyway. It isn't a " bad game "; there's just not much too it, and there's no challenge. The game is 100% STYLE, though. ;)

VMan of Mana, after reading your description I feel like I've seen your name somewhere else before.

Has anyone used dial in BBSes before?

hmm this probably isn't too interesting but
this bbs name doesn't really mean anything. a few year ago the heat was on so I picked a name that wasn't characteristic of me. I also used Genjuro for a short while; a character I liked, but he also reminded me of a guy in highschool who looked like him (not in a cool way - in more of a troll with a pony tail and a lame personality way) who I didn't like. I leave the name for the sake of other people. so they can know they are talking to the same person, and sense it's already registered on a number of bbses. I might change it if I could though. On later BBS registers I'll use something else.
I've used a number of other names before also.

Well, as you can see from my post count I am mostly a lurker. Not much time to post things up. I often come to this forum since there are always interesting things coming out.

Yes, I used to be at DALnet's #square during my high school and early college days (1995-1998). Hopefully you weren't there when I gave the encyclopedic version of my nick's history... everyone laughed at me :P After Thor left and the channel became to hectic (read: offtopic) and in some way overpopulated I eventually gave up on the channel. After that I ended in undernet's #os/2 (1997-2000) and then moved to DALnet's #animecafe (1999-present), which moved to aniverse.

What name did/do you use in #square?

---

Gen: maybe you have, these are the places where I remember posting more than once in the past years:
* DALnet's #square, #os/2, #animecafe
* Undernet's #os/2, #os2warp
* Aniverse's #animecafe
* Mozilla.org #mozillazine
* Indiana Sailor Moon Mailing List
* Megatokyo forums (posted only during the early days, became too big)
* Shoryuken forums
* MMCafe forums

I have also placed random/one time posts in different places, but I doubt you would remember my name from a place like that.

I'm so sad now... I visited the "old" "haunted" BBS and went through some old posts. It was such an exciting time back then... unlike now :(

People were excited about the 'mysterious' dreamcast. Capcom vs SNK was never going to happen. And there were wild rumors about who would be in KOF 98- (someone said there would be an FF team from Austrialia!)

And the Prof posted a lot more back then. Sigh. Those were the days...
