I hate itagaki. frankly, I think any game based ENTIRELY ON FAN SERVICE is destined to get haxx0r3 - everyone knew something like this would happen eventually. anyway, him and his "daughters" probably deserve it - this is some cosmic retribution for the whole "tekken 4 is a piece of shit" interview a while back.

Dude, I don't think he'll really be that upset. The game case says "nudity" on the back under the "why it's mature" box. Also, "mature sexual themes." So no, I doubt he's going to be that upset.

And no, I don't hate Itagaki. Who cares if the game is "totally based no fanservice?"

Is this really a bad thing? If anything it will convince lonly, stupid, or perverted guys to go get this game. I won't because am neither of the three(well, maybe a little perverted)

As for Itagaki, is the character file system in DOA2 anything like the VF4 cards as he claims they are?

I don't see the big deal it was destined to happen in a game of this nature and with so many lustful gamers out there playing doax one handed

Actually it's the result of making a game based on chicks T&A.

What the hack looks like is just a little fake. With graphics like that, you'd think they'd be a little more realistic. =P Joking. For the record, I'm a geek and perverted, but certainly not lonely. I'd buy that game without the patch. I am man, hear me... uh... *thinks* well, Hear me do something. Maybe not roar, but...

Well, Tecmo sued those guys that either unlocked a hidden nude character or made a nude patch (I was never clear on what happened) for DOA2 so I wouldn't be surprised if they did it again.

I don't hate him either. He's like a Japanese American McGee, the used car salesman of videogame designers.

Yeah, its like the Sims patch that takes away the censorship. Stupid patch anyway. With censorship on, when they go to the bathroom, they do it with their pants up and it looks really goofy.

I never understood the appeal of "uncensoring" The Sims. I thought it was funny that the blur thing covers them up. And people don't realize that you can just make a nekkid skin that works as if it were clothes. So, they'd walk around naked all of the time.

The really ironic thing is this nude patch is only possible on the xbox because of the system's hard drive. If he had put the game on PS2 or GC it would have never happened.

BTW, I have a modded xbox and have zero interest in using this patch. Without the swimsuit collecting there isn't much point in playing, though the screen capture mod is pretty neat. Something that should have been in the original game.

I'm surprised they haven't hacked DOA3 since they could do the same nude patch, but because of the import costume feature you wouldn't even need a mod chip to use it.

Same here. I'm not surprised at all.

Yeah, the reason why the people who made the modded PS2 DOA2 got sued was because they were selling a hacked/modded version of the game, not just distributing a save file that tweaked the real game.

I don't know why people are saying they're not surprised. FFX-2 is a total fan service game and is even a lazy reuse of a lot of content from FFX, but people don't say they expect a nude patch for that. Maybe it's the xbox = pc association or something.

If DOAXVB was a game I made with great care and this happened, I think I would very slightly annoyed, but not much more. It's just kind of silly, the result of people with too much time on their hands.

I'm sure the piles of DOA doujin annoy him more anyway.

I'm surprised that I have mixed emotions on this. In some ways I'm saying ITAGAKI YOU IDIOT! You don't make a fanservicey game and NOT expect some perv to alter the source material to suit their wet dreams. The other is pondering his "tease, not show" policy on the girls and the fact of some comment he made on his daughter playing the games in the series (???something about her calling it "Kasumi's game" or something???).

Though I want to tell Itagaki to shut the whining I guess inside my own game designing personailty would be disheartened by seeing the perverted defacation of my product but I'm a tad cynical to those matters of design and would just shrug it off as pervs being pervs. Unless they try to make money off it. That's copyright inringement and is more than enough to sue for rather hefty fines. [Grins in sadistic glee...]

I kind of doubt he's actually whining, if he even knows this exists. Chances are he either A.) doesn't care, or B.) is happy, because it will probably increase sales. I think this sort of thing is largely expected in Japan; most companies just don't care or actually enjoy it because it gives their products more recognition, or they actually try and make some money off of it themselves (like Gainax). Different strokes for different folks. I bet he has a similar patch for his own personal usage, anyway.

If he only cared about money, why wasn't this game released on the PS2? Why not include a topless mode in the original game? It would have certainly sparked more sales. Obviously, money isn't the biggest concern here. I also doubt he has a patched version because unlike the people who made the patch, he has a real live woman for his own personal use. :p

He didn't release the game on PS2 because he felt he maxed out the PS2 with Hardcore Source and I know there is an IGN article but it is rather old.

This is around the middle of the article

quote:
I haven't developed on the hardware myself, but I have listened in on many interviews with Tomonobu Itagaki. He tells people that DOA Hardcore maxed out the power of the PS2, and DOA3 is way beyond anything we saw in that game," George said. "The fact alone that DOA3 uses the hard drive (to stream data) means you couldn't do DOA3 on the PS2.

Oh, and lastly, Japanese business is ALL ABOUT PRODUCT RECOGNITION. It doesn't matter if the product is shoddy or if the recognition is obtained through surreptitious or dubious methods; Japanese businesses tend to be a tad shady, anyway (if money laundering is legal in your country, what do you expect?). This is why you don't see more companies suing doujin artists. While I personally think the whole thing about it " pushing the PS 2 to the limits " is crap, and payoffs were involved, this is beside the point; the true point is he uses boobies to sell the game WHETHER YOU ARE WILLING TO FACE THIS FACT OR NOT. Why in god's fucking name would they make a bloody "bathing suit beach volleyball" spin off of a FIGHTING GAME if this weren't the case? Boy, I can't wait to hear your answer for that one...

I think you need to switch to decaf.

Is it using fan service to sell the game? Of course it is. There's no doubt about that. But if 'boobies' are the only reason it was made, why was there no topless mode included in the unmodded game? Why draw the line at bikinis when nudity would have sold more copies?

While the game wouldn't look as good, DOAXVB could have been done on the PS2. Yes, a MS payoff was likely, but I doubt it would have been equal to the increased profit a PS2 version would have made, especially considering how anti-xbox Japan is.

I thought doujin weren't normally illegal in Japan, though I admit to not knowing all the details. Nintendo sued someone over a Pokemon one a while back, but that was a specific situaion since I don't think they brought every Pokemon doujin artist to court.

Because they wouldn't been able to release it. I don't think that Microsoft (or Sony, and I won't even mention Nintendo) would like to have their name related to porn. Noticed how the console dating sims have their hentai parts removed?

Rid's response is correct. For whatever bizarre ethics reason they have, purely adult games are pretty much nonexistant for home consoles in Japan; they're more or less for the PC only. Take the PC Engine or Super Famicom ports of Dragon Knight, for example; all of the explicit nudity was cut, in favor of simple "naughty" scenes. As a note, I don't drink coffee, smarmy gits just happen to get up my nose. Half of what I said in the original post was only poking fun at him, anyway, but this was apparently lost on somebody.

The bottom line of my original post was that I seriously doubt he cares at all about this, if he's even aware of it. If he'd be so upset about his "daughters" being put in such a situation, he'd A.) probably do more about the doujin market, and B.) more importantly, wouldn't have made them a bunch of bikini wearing floozies in mediocre volley-ball game, anyway.

Oh, and the particular doujin you're thinking of involved Pikachu being anally raped. Nintendo sued the artist (who was actually a WOMAN...) for "destroying the dreams of children". An "extreme case", if you will. Out of all the companies out there, I'd consider nintendo one of the "most likely to care", anyway.

I like the idea that somebody not conceived of and sat down and drew a story of Pikachu getting the short end of the stick [so to speak] but thought it would be a good idea to print up and sell copies of the story in the belief that others would be interested in the concept. Fandom, in all it's forms, is an interesting thing.

It's amazing, indeed. I think this incident also demonstrates that these companies keep an eye on the doujin market, they just normally don't care, maybe for the same reasons Big West didn't care when Fasa corporation ripped off all their designs for " Battletech" ("It shows they like our programs!"). I figure this one "overstepped the line"; of course, who on earth would buy that, anyway????

Hmm, speaking of which, any recollection as to how the whole Karin thing worked in Street Fighter Zero 3. I thought I rememberd Karin being a made-up chara in a doujin that was popular enough for Capcom to decide to "put" her in the newest Zero game. Did they just pluck her out of the comic and put her in because doujins are based on their copyrighted work in the first place? I'm sure the artist was overjoyed, either way, but did he have a choice I wonder...

About Karin, she appeared in "Sakura Ganbaru", a Capcom-authorized manga done by the same artist who did the ones based on Cammy. Whoever was working on Zero 3 liked her enough, they put her in the game. It wasn't a doujin...

if "the SHIZNITS" is the way all the cool kids are saying "a week old piece of dog crap"

then yes, Tekken 4 is totally 'the SHIZNITS'

Also note that the big publishing companies also tend to raid Doujin publishers for new talent and fresh blood. Keiichi Sonada and Clamp all got their start in Doujin circles, and Koshi Rikudo is heavy into the scene as well. It's just a good place to get talent with experience (without investing too much into training them....).

Not to mention cracking down on a market that contains hardcore fans would be very bad for Business (See the early days of Jailed in the US for an example of that). Add in the fact Japanese copywrite law doesn't require a company to fiercly protect it's property at every turn and you have a market more open to Doujin...

Aren't people still bitter at Working Designs since they sued all those Lunar fanart sites back in the SegaCD days?

I don't care about them personally now that there are planty of companies that bring out their genre of software faster, with less alterations and generally the original game is of higher quality as well (i.e Atlus).

Working Designs, being an American Company who doesn't actually make any games, wasn't considered in this topic. ^_^
