I've tried making a mold a couple of times and it's really hard. An easy way is to use some good quality modeling putty to form your mold and then pour in something which will harden (plaster, resin etc). Unfortunately, I learnt the process from my local hobby store owner person, so I can't tell you of any reference books about the subject.
Hobby Link Japan and Hobby Search stock books on figure kit modeling, so you might want to try them, but they're all in Japanese.
As for a paint wash, what do you mean? ^_^ If you mean painting a base coat, it depends on what material you're working with. Usually I'm lazy and spray my model with a can of modeling primer and finish it off with some neutral matte airbrushed paint.
Haha, alternatively, scan your models with a 3d scanner and use a 3d printer to spit them out. An option for the very few :)
It can be difficult, but it's a very nice hobby. Maybe you could take some pictures of the stuff you've made and post them here? Good luck!

Thank you for the help! I can't read Japanese so those books can't help me... I think I will bug the local hobby store owner in my town to see if can give me any further details!

a paint wash is something they do on toys often these days. They paint them a matte color and then somehow a apply a thin (watery?) top layer of paint that sinks into the details and gives the figure more depth... it's something I want to try with a few of muscle bound chacters, I have a pretty good idea on how it *might* be done, but I'm not certain ^__^'

Maybe I will post some pictures... I'm starting with an "easy" (read no sculpting other then a new head)project to see if I can even do casting right...
I'm using the BASTARD!! Polno figure to make a custom Harley Quin (you know, from Batman) since I doubt DCD or Mattel is going to make one for awhile. ^__^' I can only hope for the best...
