quote: The dubs fine by me, but I like dubs usually. I have the DVDs. On Toonami some of the bloodsprays were edited, but blood is still there. Also they don't show the opening and just put together clips for the opening (which they do for all of toonami and Adult Swim's shows, except for Cowboy Bebop) but the ending was weird, cause they showed the opening during the end credits, at what seemed like a faster speed. They also didn't get through the whole outro video and song because the credits went fast. Still the actual show is the most important part, and I think it'll be fine on Toonami.
I'm a Dub-fan myself. I like subs just fine and all, but I like being able to visually explore my Anime. series like Evangelion truley require Dub for those who don't know Japanese. There is so much going on in that show visually that you can't waste time reading.
I don't mind dubs if they aren't terrible. I personally like the OMG dub better than the original. It was kinda interesting how they tried to convey Kenshin's method of speech to English. I don't think he sounded girly enough, but overall it was pretty good.
I read fast so subs don't bother me.
I wish they hadn't cut out the intro though. Freckles is one of my favorite intro songs. It's just so goofy.

I think it'll be interesting to see what people who saw the Kenshin OAV first (unthinkable for manga readers or fansub watchers) think of the TV show. In reality, the comic was far more a blend of the two then one might think. To my mind, the Shounen Jump Kenshin was amazingly (and disastrously) made into near-Shoujo anime in many parts: the awful awful addition of Ayame and Suzume (were those their names?) and the low-budget speed lines and dark-screens-with-cut-motions to indicate a slash.
For those who want the truest flavor of the real comic Kenshin, I suggest certain episodes (discrepancies in direction and quality have convinced me that for select epiodes different directors were used):
The Kenshin-Saitou encounter, the Kenshin-Hiko encounter, and Kenshin-Sano-Katsu (~ep 15?) are all superiorly done, with appropriate grit and comic mix that is a true representation of the comic.
That said, without the comic to soil impressions, the whole series will be a whole lot of fun for anyone to watch. Er, except the inept translation of Kenshin's formal speech into a gnome-like "I'm a rurouni I am" stuff. Hmmmm....

When Kenshin was in that village that Sengaku was oppresing it was right out of the comic book.

Fine by me! It depends on your tastes I guess on whether this was disasterous or not. Personally the part of the tv series I didn't like was the awful comical sound effects that they used occationally. It reminded be of old Woody Wood Pecker cartoons.

The Kenshin-Saitou fight is the best episode of the series. As you say, very faithful to the spirit of the manga.
About the comic relief of the series... well, it's not that bad, the comic characters and situations are clearly set apart from the dramatic/action parts, so it's OK with me.

I kind of saw both first, if you will. I like both the TV series and the OAV. the OAV was simply beuatiful in plot/animation/music. Most definitly music, but the TV series has it's own charms.

That is a good fight, but I really like the Kenshin-Shishio fight and the Kenshin-Aoshi fight (the last one they have).

Oh yeah, regarding above, yes, a good chunk of the anime is straight from the comic (those that aren't are always crappy and you can tell), it was that those scenes (Kenshin v Saitou, Kenshin-Hiko, etc.) have the same SPIRIT as the comic, I meant. Yeah, the Senkaku village sequence is straight from the comic, most is, but only in those special episodes where there's actually non-generic visual directing and good animation does it start to feel most like the comic. (Senkaku was crappy in the comic even, and the TV version didn't help ^_^ ). But to my mind, those eps have "Kenshinness" down best in the anime...doesn't hurt that they're incredible scenes to boot!
edit: awp, checked and it's Senkaku, actually. Shows how memorable that was.
