Sorta self explanitory BUT I'm looking for a few more intellectual posts than "She makes me want to whack off 10 times a day instead of just 3" or on the flip side "All expressions of sexuality are EVIL.

Or am I just setting the stage for a flame war...

I say "depends," because really... putting in fanservice JUST TO SHOW BOOBS AND ASS is one thing *COUGH*DOAXVB*COUGH* , but putting fanservice in in a quality product (FF X / X2, street fighter games in general) is totally okay.

Anyway, I voted yes

I say sure. Designers can do whatever the hell they want; that's why they're the designers, and not me.

Sure, I have no problem with fan-service in good games. It's anice icing on the cake...

Then again, it can't save a bad game...

It really depends on what the developer is trying to express through a given character. I can see there being instances where fan service could be used as a means to flesh out a character (excuse the terrible pun) from a psychological stand point. Granted there may be better ways of doing this, but I could see it working. I'm not sure if I've ever seen a game do this though as most, if not all of the games in my experience have used fan service simply for the sake of sex appeal. Just my opinion though.

Sure, if it fits the character. It's always nice to have a fanservicial girl (And no problem if there are fanservicial guys, we need to balance).

THanks, Mog & Rid for explaining it so good.

I voted "depends". I think that it's a way to make a character deeper and more likeable (or loveable him, right Igniz?), but as long as it doesn't ruin him/her (of course, I'm not talking only about girls) by rising its fanservice level too much. And I'm against doing characters with none other goal than fanservice, even though I admit sometimes that's a hard thing to distinguish.

I voted for depends.

I'm not above using fan service in my own character designs, but only when it fits the character. For example, one of my characters is practically naked all the time because she always wants to be the center of attention (and finds negative attention through dressing trashy is the easiest to get.)but her little sister is supposed to be the 'cute, bubbley, magic-girl' archtype, so obviously she'd NEVER wear revealing clothing.

So to echo the statement others have already made, fan service is fine if it fits the character's persona.

I said Depends (not the adult diapers)

There are shows where you know the characters were made with the male audience in mind.

The creator makes the show, and depending on how they want to direct the show, they'll make there characters the way they want them. This is pretty much reiterating what's already been said but whatever..

Take Kiddy Grade for an example (putting on flame retardant suit) incredibly short skirts, one perky character and one quiet character (the quiet types fall prey to alot of ecchi material *general rule of thumb*)

lots of panty shots and boobs shaking kinda stuff like that. Pointless stuff like getting dressed up like a restarant server to run into a scene of gun tottling soliders... (that pretty much turned me off from the show...)

I dont know when you seen alot of anime and have been into anime for as long as... most of us have, for me I got tired of it..

If your show/manga/character design calls for it, I guess for comedy purposes or for sexual references, just remember that there are shows out there that can rely on better writing then to make another "haha, my boobs are bigger then yours" kinda joke line, it's been done...

Im working on charcters myself, but I dont go nuts on proportions or anything.. it'll give you more credibility to not make one of "those" characters

That's my mentality. I'll gladly use it for character development but only when needed. I despise it when just used to get a rise on. Example: Though I think that altering Yuna's outfit for something more mobile was a good idea but I don't think they had to present her as "LOOK AT THAT GIRL WITH THE DAISY DUKES ON!" It was said that more males should be used. All those guys here that don't want to look at other men seem to forget that fanservice guys could bring in female gamers. Perhaps, make some unique twists to the idea. Perhaps adding a fanservice female that is heavyset (and I mean in a serious manner)?

Now for some I think were good choices. Elena (SF3) may not be wearing much but that's a cultural thing from being in a warm climate and needing a flexible outfit for her fighting style. Not only that, but when in different situations she covers up. Natsu (RS series) is a bit large chested but she's also tall and "overdeveloped" if you will. She actually dislikes this trait because she thinks it makes her unattractive.

It'd be alright for me.. But they don't pick on men NEARLY as much as they pick on women. If they kept it equal and balanced then I wouldn't have a problem with it at all. But it's mildly offensive when an entire game is based around naked women. ... that annoys me a little. So it all depends on if they equalize it or not. ^_^

Well that will be hard to get seeing as how it's a male oriented industry.. it's what the masses want and what attracts buyers (again which are mostly guys)

so to equalize is next to impossible unless there is more support from female gamers.

Blatent fanservice can get me to stop watching a show/play a game. Such as in Dead or Alive 2 whenever I pick Ayame I pick the costume where she's wearing pants (or whatever you call it) because looking at panties gets old. So does looking at bouncing boobies. Same goes for body-hugging outfits that show off all the 'necessary curves' and stuff. It gets old. I have a pretty darn good imagination and I don't need someone else's help to imagine things.

I like to think there's more to making a likable character than make them cater to someone, but these days almost everything caters to something (and I'm talking about other sorts of fanservice besides bouncing boobs and flying skirts).

I found Kagami's sword in a junk yard.
I also provide nothing useful to the gaming community.
