I remember long ago, when I first watched anime I always skipped the intros. Rightfully so; many, if not all of them, were crap. Propagandist extention of the titles and nothing more.
Over the years though, intros have grown more and more into an art form all their own... more clever, more thematic and less about "here's this character, and here's this character, and here's a group pic". Sure there's still a little of that too, but it's not treated with as much importance as it once was.
What, in your opinion, is the best intro to an anime TV/OVA series ever? It doesn't even have to be a great series, maybe a lousy one but it could still have had a fantastic intro.
For me, it's difficult to say, I've seen so many... but I remember the first intro that I saw that really impressed me. That would have to be from Key: The Metal Idol. The combination of electric pop music and the dual representation of machinery and a city skyline was unmistakably trippy and cool to me.
Some others I could mention: Noir, Cowboy Bebop, Mahou Tsuki Tai! (OVA), Ranma 1/2 (1st season, it's all about that song), Nadesico, Cardcaptor Sakura, Tsukikage Ran, GitS: Stand-Alone Complex, Record of Lodoss War (TV series)
I don't usually make new posts, so give me some responses eh ^_^

Hm.. I've always liked all 3 openings for Hokuto No Ken.. they all set the mood for the storyline at the time, and the animation kept getting better with every intro.. plus those songs are always in my head for some odd reason ^^;

There's lots of great intros in Anime, from Inyu Yasha's first intro, to Ranma 1/2's Second intro, Kenshin's second intro, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex CGI Intro, in no particular order. But if I had to guess, I'm not gonna base them solely on the song, but just how it introed the series. Second place goes to GTO's first intro. Onizuka flushes a Toilet, walks around naked, rides his bike and does Grafiti on school grounds! They captured his character pertfectly in this intro!
First place goes to an oldy but a goody. Fist of the North Star's first intro. I can't explain it, but that song just makes you want to go out and start fighting! And when the music changes up and you see all the suffering people, and then you see Kenshiro about to fight a big monster rising from the ground, you know it's but whooping time!
