"Best anime series intro" , posted Tue 11 Mar 20:47post reply

I remember long ago, when I first watched anime I always skipped the intros. Rightfully so; many, if not all of them, were crap. Propagandist extention of the titles and nothing more.

Over the years though, intros have grown more and more into an art form all their own... more clever, more thematic and less about "here's this character, and here's this character, and here's a group pic". Sure there's still a little of that too, but it's not treated with as much importance as it once was.

What, in your opinion, is the best intro to an anime TV/OVA series ever? It doesn't even have to be a great series, maybe a lousy one but it could still have had a fantastic intro.

For me, it's difficult to say, I've seen so many... but I remember the first intro that I saw that really impressed me. That would have to be from Key: The Metal Idol. The combination of electric pop music and the dual representation of machinery and a city skyline was unmistakably trippy and cool to me.

Some others I could mention: Noir, Cowboy Bebop, Mahou Tsuki Tai! (OVA), Ranma 1/2 (1st season, it's all about that song), Nadesico, Cardcaptor Sakura, Tsukikage Ran, GitS: Stand-Alone Complex, Record of Lodoss War (TV series)

I don't usually make new posts, so give me some responses eh ^_^

Excel Saga has a great intro, as it just gets you in the mood for the series. A perfect nonsense opening (a nonsensical song) for a silly anime..

Azumanga Daioh does the same thing, and the song really gets you in the mood for Azu.

I like the Cowboy Bebop intro and the intro to the Gunsmith Cat OVAs a lot.

I dig Azumanga's opening alot. Such a silly song :)
Gundam has always had great openings. Seed's first opening is great, I love W's second one, and Zeta's opening had me humming that song for a long time :)
Neo Getter Robo vs Shin Getter Robo's opening song (Storm) rocks my socks hard. Can't get enough of that song. Hell, all super robot openings rule. They just get you in that mood to watch some giant robots kick the snot out of each other :)

I've always liked the 'Love Somebody' intro for You're Under Arrest. The upbeat mood of the song and visuals mesh with the nature of the series perfectly.

Then there's the Saber Marrionette J intro, which does a fantasic job of introducing the heros and villians and best of all, the action on-screen mimes the lyrics of the song. "Wandering in the void between zero and infinity" - thats a wonderful, wonderful turn of phrase.

The BGC 2040 intro is just too stylish for words...as long as you don't know what the song means.

By the by, TRIGUN probaly has the worst outro in the history of Japan.

Yup. :(
Although Hellsing's was pretty bad too.

I almost forgot: Lain! I loved that intro.

the EVA intro was my favorite for a long long time.

slayers next is still one of my favorites, just because "give a reason" is one of my favorite OP songs.

um... think of more later.

Hm.. I've always liked all 3 openings for Hokuto No Ken.. they all set the mood for the storyline at the time, and the animation kept getting better with every intro.. plus those songs are always in my head for some odd reason ^^;

I have a problem... I usually like them all!!

Really, there are few openings I don't like, but just as an example, here are some openings I like:

- Saint Seiya (first one)
- Dragon Ball (first one, in japanese and in spanish)
- Slayers NEXT
- Cowboy Bebop
- Escaflowne
- etc, etc, etc...

Oh My Goddess since the lyrics "Cover me softly with your shirt" confused the hell out of me when I was walking by a store and saw the intro playing.

EDIT: Plus it had the red herring of including Marrler who has yet to appear in the series or the movie (although she was in the Mini series).

Cowboy Bebop, Gunsmith Cats and Read or Die. The first two are 70's flavored with jazz music, that's cool. And ROD is excellent also, feels like a movie op.

Dinagiga - I can't describe how much I loved the opening, and how much I didn't love the anime itself
Haibane Renmei - not much the directing or animation, but the music was great
Himikoden - Cool?
Mahou Senshi Riui - Twinkle Trick!
Kokoro Toshokan - Elegant

No one mentioned the non-intro intros of Arujuna? The use of music in the series is GREAT, and the varied intros are really heightened by its presence.

but the absolute best intro ever? Kidou Senshi Dynagiga. Just BLAZING HOT. Probably the best use of CG in its time, with uber-smooth character designs and great cutting back and forth between images, not to mention a GREAT OP tune. I should pop in my LD and capture that opening, because it's SOOOOO DAAAAAMN GOOOOOOOOD! Thing is, capturing doesn't look nearly HALF as good as putting my CLD-D703 through a nice upscan converter and just...OOOOOH! THE COLORS! THE MOTION! And the tune is so damn hop poppy happy, it gets you snapping your fingers while you're treated to AAAAAAHHHHH SO MUCH ANIMATED GOODNESS!

Okay...I'm done now. The Reader's Digest version: Excellent OP sequence for a short and mediocre mecha OAV series based on a radio drama of the late 90s. Dinagiga. You know you want it!!! O_O!!!!

There's lots of great intros in Anime, from Inyu Yasha's first intro, to Ranma 1/2's Second intro, Kenshin's second intro, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex CGI Intro, in no particular order. But if I had to guess, I'm not gonna base them solely on the song, but just how it introed the series. Second place goes to GTO's first intro. Onizuka flushes a Toilet, walks around naked, rides his bike and does Grafiti on school grounds! They captured his character pertfectly in this intro!

First place goes to an oldy but a goody. Fist of the North Star's first intro. I can't explain it, but that song just makes you want to go out and start fighting! And when the music changes up and you see all the suffering people, and then you see Kenshiro about to fight a big monster rising from the ground, you know it's but whooping time!
