Wow, that's a neat look at the older Athena and her games. I've never really seen alot of pics of them before so this was very informative.

Thanks for sharing the link Rid!

(Looks through site) Did Psycho Soldier get a NA or European release? Cause they have some bad ENglish box art (Really bad) on the site...

Can someone please explain the gameplay in the NES Athena title. I remember playing it but it made no sense to me. It was your typical side scroller but I never understood where the boss was at or the point. What was the story? Who did you have to rescue or save or what?

I gotta find me a copy of this game and play it again.

Oh god...that makes me feel so fecking old.

I remember playing Psycho Soliders in a gas station up in Wells, NV a few months after it came out. The game totally kicked ass, and the voices were charming. Little did I realize that it was by SNK, or great SNK was at the time/about to become. Played the old Athena cab once too a long time ago.

The boss is just at the end of the stage; the first boss is a big evil tree thing. You just need to wander about the stage and get items until you think you're strong enough to take him on.

According to Seanbaby, the nes game is the 20th worst of all time. I haven't played it so I can't comment, but I really do appreciate the pre KOF Athena art. Thanks!!

I'll say this: If he thinks Athena is the 20th worst game of all time, he hasn't played very many games.

I'm not a seanbaby fan due in part to his views on games like this, and also in (perhaps larger) part because of his jingoism.

Well, that's the only boss I've ever got to. I can never beat the frickin' tree! It really pisses me off.

Look around for the red ring... it gives Athena the fire sword and golden armor. He's easy then.

I think he's funny. I don't necessarily agree with everything he says, but I still think he's funny.

I didn't realize KOF's Athena was THAT Athena......

It's the silliest question that I could ever do in this thread, but here I go:
Are the original "Psycho Soldier" and "Athena" games canon to the KOF saga (same for Ikari, but this's about Athena...), or did SNK just take the same original character idea and nothing more for the fighting games?

Athena Asamiya is supposed to be a descendant of the original Athena, so probably it's offical. As for Psycho Soldier, since it's the name of the team, it would be safe to asume that it's official too...

The original Athena was the goddess herself?

I thought it was the same character for both (Athena Asamiya, the goddess' reincarnation, descendant, whatever...) but I didn't know if the original games' plot was canon for KOF...
Hmmm....

Yes, the " original " Athena is the goddess Athena, who was bored and came down to Earth for fun (really.) Psycho Soldier is the same Athena we have now, and yeah, it's most likely " real " . The Ikari games DEFINATELY are " real ". Funny that two guys who can kill hundreds of of people with their bare hands never won KOF. :D
Still, I guess if Ralph and Clark can do that, Kyo would be able to kill many more people even faster, which explains why Krizalid opted to clone Kyo instead of somebody who's cool. >:D

Thanks a lot, Rugal, I'll try that. Oh, and for anyone looking for it, look at Gamestop, EB, Babbages, etc. I see it there all the time in the NES games they are selling. That's also how I luckily got River City Ransom and Ghosts n' Goblins. I love buying old NES games.
