While I'm not the biggest fan of racing games, I admit that I've really enjoyed a few (Rage Racer, R4, Gran Turismo 1 and 2, and Colin McRae), and I was thinking in getting one for my Dreamcast. Which one do you recommend? No matter if it's more to the arcade or simulation sides, I want one that's fun, has nice tracks, and if possible, a nice car selection. I heard that MSR is the best, it's that true?
Well, thanks for any info!

Well, if you like Gran Turismo, you'll probably like Sega GT. I didn't really like it much on DC or Xbox, but I'm not a GT fan, and that's what it plays most like, so...
Tokyo Xtreme Racer games are okay, not excellent but fun. However, I also think "ricer" modifications like coffee can exhaust, ugly bodykits, and huge spoilers are stupid, so there are some parts of the game I don't enjoy, heheh.
MSR probably is the best, a lot of people seem to dig it, but I just couldn't get into it. I'm really picky about my racing games, and for my money, R4 is still the most fun.

Yeah, that's how I am... part of the reason I hate the new trends in racing games. I really loved R4, it just clicked with me. I hope the new Ridge Racer will play more like it than RRV did. RRV wasn't bad, just... not as good as R4, to me.
The "sim" style gameplay seems a little odd to me. It doesn't feel like driving real car to me, and yet, it doesn't seem very fun, either. It just feels like playing a slow driving game with no real sense of speed and no fun gameplay. Gran Turismo seems ploddingly dull to me. You never feel like you're really going fast, and the so-called realistic physics make for a lot of sudden slowing down, and... well, I know my opinion is in the minority, but I don't see why it's so successful. I liked the first GT, but as they went on, I seemed to enjoy them less... but to its credit, GT3 is a gorgeous game. I've never seen such realistic renditions of real-world cars, I don't think. Part of me wanted to buy it just to drive the WRX...
And maybe that's the appeal of GT. Drive the cars you can't afford! But I wish I could do it in a more unrealistic environment. I don't know, it just seems to me that I get more of a real thrill when I'm driving my car than I do in the video game... I play the video game to do things I can't do in real life, not reproduce the experience.
I was really burned when I heard auto modellista is a sim-type game. I wanted it to have insane arcade physics to go with the beautiful cel-shaded look. Alas, I guess it's not to be.
I guess F-Zero will always be fun...

Yah i loved R4. Its an awesome game. R5 seemed pretty good too i dont own a ps2 tho.
I would say the best race game on dc is F355 challenge, the powerslides in that game can be monstrous plus i heard the make actual ferrari drivers practice on a souped version of that game.
I dunno if i would actually pay more than 5 bucks for it tho.
The only race games i would pay for would be a sequel to wipeout or ridge racer.
Is this the end of Zombie Shakespeare?

Argh! I can't believe I forgot SR2. I'm a dolt. SR2 is pretty cool. I wonder if we'll see a third on a new console someday...
And as for F355, well, damn! Requires way too much precision for my taste, but I can see why people would dig it. The "Challenge" in the name wasn't kidding. Can't get into it, really, especially without that wacky arcade setup.
It'd be kinda like playing Airline Pilots without 3 monitors... Kinda sucks a lot of the novelty value away.
Oh! And I forgot Daytona USA, too. Oddly enough, I think the Saturn port is more fun, because the DC version's control is messed up beyond belief. You gotta tweak it a LOT to get comfortable.
That, and they messed up the hilarious/funky B-UNIV music.
I still wish Super GT/Scud Race came out for DC. I loved that game in arcades... but maybe that's because of the tilting cabinet. That was tons of fun to play in. It's kinda like Top Skater, I think... it just wouldn't be fun at home, maybe.

quote: I read that Scud Racer was ported initially to dc as a demo to get the ball rolling for the dreamcast before it came out and was shown off at some early electronics expo.. that was a dope game.
I always wanted to play Rage Racer...
I had seen screenshots of what was supposedly Scud Race running on DC, and it looked good... but that was a long time ago. I'm kinda sad it never matured beyond that.
Rage Racer is good, and I liked it a lot... before R4. The drift style in R4 changes the way I look at racers, heh, to me it just seemed like perfection. Rage Racer is still good to play, but I can't see it the same since... It doesn't sell for a lot used, but it's kinda hard to find now. It's worth grabbing if you see it.
By the way, got a question for everybody, especially Namco race fans... how many of you have/use neGcon and or Jogcon controllers? I have both... bought a neGcon long ago, and I got a Jogcon with the R4 limited edition package. Both are fun, but Jogcon seems more like a novelty than anything else. The force feedback is very cool, but neGcon is actually useful for gameplay...
