For animated feature - Check the Oscar site out

It faces competition from Treasure PLanet, Lilo and Stitch, Spirit, and Ice Age...

Good. I still was annoyed that Final Fantasy got shafted last year. I didn't really like the movie much and it shouldn't have won, but on a purely technically level it deserved to be noticed.

I dunno...Final Fantasy was very well done film from the technical side, but I still couldn't see it going for a nod as the best animated feature since I found the film to be so...bleah...

What I would like to see is the award broken up into two, an award for the actual best animated film and an award for the technical side. That way technical leaps like the ones in the FF movie can be honored, and we can still give an award to the best overall film...

I actually watched both Lilo and Stitch and Treasure Planet... (as much of an anti-disney gal I am)..... the animation for TP wasn't too bad. Lilo and Stitch was actually pretty funny in places.. Stitch was cute.

But I'd like to see Spirited Away win.

If either Spirted Away or Lilo and Stitch win, I'll be happy. They're both extremely excellent.

I liked Treasure Planet (unlike everyone else), but it doesn't deserve the award.

Spirit (Horse one) was stupid, it *could* win on the fact horses are impossible to draw and some credit is deserved for trying, but that's more of a 'techincal achievement' award then a 'best animated picture'

Ice Age wasn't that good, if it wins I'm murdering someone (probably Denis Leary! He's in the movie AND said he was on the Oscar committy... so if Ice Age wins it's his fault)

... Shrek won last year right? well if Lilo and Stitch or Sprited Away win then at least Best Animated Feature has some merit to it.

I swear, if Spirited Away loses to competition like that, I'm never watching the Oscars again.

I would argue that Lilo and Stitch deserves the award just as much... but instead I'll say you shouldn't be watching the Oscars to begin with.

That's 4 to 5 hours (they claims 3 but aren't fooling anyone!) of your life you could be using to enjoy one of your other hobbies... and it's not like the winners aren't posted in the paper, on the internet, and reported on Info-tainmetn shows the next day anyway.

Spirited away has to win. Theres no way that a disney movie with a recycled storyline can win over it.

I dont dislike Disney movies, but Spirited away is just leagues better than all the other candidates.

Edit: My opinion of course, just like all you crazy hooligans.

Okay, I don't watch the Oscars per se, I simply review them, maybe occasionally glance at them to see what's going on. But if it doesn't win I'm never reviewing the Oscars again. I'm not even acknowledging their existance.

And IMO L&S wasn't anywhere near the same level of creativity as SA. It was mildly entertaining, somewhat clever but not very thought-provoking or even all that original. The pacing and shape of the plot was an absolute mess, to boot. And as far as comedic value goes, Disney can do and already has done much better. It's just a mediocre kid's film like so many other forgotten Disney films.

Awesome that it's been nominated. That's good recognition in and of itself. But at the same time, though, for some reason I'm just betting that it's not the judges' first choice. (I'm just hoping Ice Age is their last choice from that list.)

I'm probably not going to watch the Oscars. I'll most likely forget to watch it, just like I forgot about a university-sponsored showing last night of Spirited Away for US$3 (GRAAUGH!!).

[...well, I won't be traumatized about missing the Oscars.]

Actually I'm thinking Spirited Away is the front runner, simply cause I can see this Oscar being a lifetime achivement award for Miyazaki (Which he does deserve given the quality of his films).

And since their isn't really a strong Disney film here (Don't get me wrong, I love Lilo and Stitich, but the different nature of it may scare away voters...Treasure planet is...Treasure Planet) I can see the voters giving it to them this year...

(Especially since next years award will be locked up by Pixar, unless their next film is bad...which I doubt it will be).

Well, if "Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius" could get nominated based on the facts that it was a) animated and b) a film, FF should have been as well (although it still shouldn't have won).

Call me jaded, but I really doubt Spirited Away will win. I'd love to be pleasantly surprised but I'm pretty sure it will go to Spirit or Lilo and Stitch. Don't get me wrong, Lilo and Stitch was cute and all, but it really was pretty slim in terms of substance.

I tend to think it'll be this way too, but I've more hopes this time, since "Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi" is such a good movie. Even when it's not American, I think the Academy members should see the differences between this film and the other nominees. Characters, story... it's all better!

PS: I might get killed for this, but I quite enjoyed "Ice Age"... And the bad guy's name was Soto, my second name, so I feel kind of identified .

Not only that, on that thread there was mention on Titan AE and its merchandising. Well treasure planet immediately pooped out (before the movie?) a crappy sound track introducing some pop artist or something, stoopid toys, a horrible game for all 3 consoles and the gba, about 3 or 4 different pc games that immediately went into the 20-9 dollar area (one of them apparently not horrible surprisingly, I hear it was made by the creators of Homeworld) and crappy Mc Donalds toys (crappy food AND crappy movie!) And im sure there was countless miscelaneous merchandise that disney likes to make, like treasure planet underwear.

Aligning yourself with the god of penguins gives you a +40 bonus to irony. Fear the god of penguins.

Now lets continue with out regular thread programming.

Edit: REPENT!

well in all fairness, that sort of move is expected from Disney, sort of like when TMNT puts out a billion and a half toys you just go "ha! those zany ninja turtles!" but when Butt-Ugly Martians does it you think "pffff! You'll NEVER be the Turtles!"... I guess what I'm saying is when Disney does that crazy shit it's expected since they tend to do well, but when another company does that it seems like they're expecting a Disney level pay off which just seems lame. (it's a double standard I know, but in my mind other companies shouldn't be stooping to Eisner's lows)

Also when I mentioned the merchandising I hadn't been to the Disney store (nor did I know Sony/GBA games existed yet)... I didn't realize they made so many Plushies of characters I didn't think anyone would even want a plushy of (okay, Morph I'll let them get away with... but what kid wants to sleep with a stuffed animal version of B.E.N. or Silver?) Seeing all that crazy crap makes me glad Treasure Planet bombed as badly as Titan A.E., I mean how can you make a line of toys and NOT include Mr.Arrow and Captain Amillia? At least Titan A.E. covered all the good characters in it's toy line...

oh Irony, thine are delicious!

"Remembering animated receptions last year..." , posted Wed 12 Feb 12:26post reply

I actually remembered that I watched the Oscars from last year. Does anyone remember the animated receptions then? One thing about all the three movies that were nominated was that they were CG-rendered, so the animators took the models and made them appear as if they were in the audience, acknowledging their nominations, then responding to winning or losing.

I'm banking on a more traditional reception this year. Unless the animated reactions are still commissioned... would Studio Ghibli do it? Would we really wanna see that?

Reasons IF it doesn't win:

The voters didn't watch it.
The voters didn't want it to win because it's from Japan (although none of these films are 100% American).
The voters lock into some small aspect of the other films that they like better.
The voters actually like one of the other films better.
The voters vote for their own film/their buddies' film.

Remember I said "IF". As Juan said, you crazy hooligans. These aren't my personal feelins as to why I don't want the movie to win, only possibile explanations if it doesn't.

I haven't seen Spirit. Here's how I'd rank the rest of them.
1 Spirited Away
2 Treasure Planet
3 Ice Age
4 Lilo and Stitch
Ice Age & Lilo were a bit of a close call for me.

The problem I have with the full length animated movie category is that it draws from such a sparse selection. In a good year there are maybe five or six animated movies released theatrically and how many of those should be considered potentially award winning material is open to debate. As it currently stands, if a studio releases an animated film it has a pretty good chance of getting a nomination. From now on most every release for the home market of an animated movie is going to be able to include the line "Academy Award Nominated Film for Best Animated Feature" in their ad campaign. While it's nice that animation as an art form is getting some sort of consistent recognition there really isn't enough movies out there for a proper competition.

Since the Oscars usually have some cornball animated bit made especially for the show I wonder what they are going to do this year?

I agree.

The Academe should consider that some categories don't have enough movies for a proper competition some years, and it shouldn't be mandatory that there is a competition every year should it? Like for example the only musicals that came out one year were all living jokes, why bother having a "Best Musical" category. I haven't researched this stuff deeply, this is just my general impressions...

I wouldn't say Ice Age, and Lilo and Stitch were Oscar nomination worthy. Sorry guys. Treasure Planet I liked mostly for the pirate character, and I might let that one through.

Have you ever watched the Best Animated Short nominations? They are usually GARBAGE! Looking at some of the nominations and winners, it makes me think that it's all about the Hollywood connections here instead of the art.

That's generally how it is for ALL award shows. A while back they tried to make a Hispanic music award show and the winners were people like Christina Aguilera and Ricky Martin. Obviously bands that are much more talented, but not as well known in this country were offended and boycotted the event so it crashed and burnt.

Plus there's always movies that are tailor made to be oscar winners.

-Forbidden love? Check.
-Guy who goes against the norm? Check.
-Woman who gives up something to be with guy? Check.
-Lots of close face shots of people looking whimsical and misty eyed? Check
-Nazis in love? Check (okay that was just for the English Patient)
