Given that there are at least a few negative sentiments toward Probotector, I figured it would be good to ask what of it really inspires controversy. I do have fond memories of playing through the North American versions of the Contra titles -- I'd imagine that's the same for many folks on this BBS. But, seeing the European versions, the only objections I could note were the storyline cuts in Probotector for the Mega Drive. Aside from that, I really can't see any other reasons for animosity against the series; with regards to the changes from human or human-like characters to robotic characters, I see it more akin to changes from Doki Doki Panic to Super Mario Bros. 2 in the US. And as I've mentioned (and as you can see), I do really enjoy the robotic characters: besides just generally enjoying the designs, the feeling for me of seeing the European versions of these titles is akin to finding out there are more selectable characters in the games I first enjoyed years ago. So, I really can't see many sources from criticism -- and furthermore, aside from the already-mentioned storyline cuts in Probotector for the Mega Drive, I can't conclude that Europe missed out on the experience of Contra.

But, what might I be missing here? What are your opinions toward Probotector, and what are the main reasons for it?

The only thing that puzzles me is the hypocrisy behind all that stuff. Other than that, the games are the same, wich mean oh so great.
I remember I played Contra at a friend, then a few years later Probotectors, and it takes me a big bunch of time to figure out why these 2 games seemed so much the same game...

Ha ha ha ha. I was primarily just teasing you there, omegadog. But it's true, I dislike Probotector, if only because I like the Contra series so much and don't like to see it fiddled with (the two U.S. made games are TRULY a humiliation to the series... but let us never speak of them again) I think other's problems come from a similar source. But in the case of the Megadrive Probotector, it's missing characters, too.

Hello,

This topic I feel is something I can't lean over to be a guilty pleasure.. Um... I really like Contra because the concept of Gung-Ho space marines are moreover like the inspiration of toughness.

Rugal and I are purists of the Contra series, and them being robots detracts the idea of survival horror or how humans are not really expendable and Lance and Bill are memorable, worldwide icons. (Xenophobic Swarzennegger and Stallone inspirations)

Probotector masks the fear of human paranoia of an alien threat against human extinction. Robot heroes like Probotectors can be made over and over again. I know that Konami could clone back the Lance (or Bill?) characters to revive the series in a cloning lab, if they died but it doesn't chain back authenticity or hook back old story arcs.

Sorry guy, but I really think that Probotector really masks the idea of the good ol' American Marine Gung-Ho Hero, and the concept of the human heroic myth. Live long Lance and Bill as they stand proud high atop a mountain with the Konami flag flapping in the wind!

Cheers,

sssushi ^_^

The main problem is that there was absolutely no reason to make this changes. Contra was never ultra violent or bloody, and still they replaced the classic heroes with some generic looking robots. Pretty mindless.

But whatever. The only android I want to see in the Contra series is LCR. Hey lets replace KOF with robots. Its too violent!

Edit: ROBOT ATE YO BABY.

Agreed with Juan here.
I'm not a Contra fan, and I have nothing against "games with robots". But I'm totally against censorship and lack of respect to the original, much specially when are "apparently" pointless, like in this case.
