Hmmm... My first Metroid has been Fusion, and I love it. I'm eager to play the rest of the saga, and with Prime, i'll be able to play two more (Prime and the first Metroid). However, some say Fusion is the less good of the rest. And I ask: why? Good action with a really good difficulty (difficult, but beatable), interesting story, great level design & game structure, very good music and art...

Questions:

1) What makes other Metroids better (at least for some people).

2) Is always so short?

3) I heard Metroid Prime is a remake of sorts of the first Metroid. True?

4) What's the exact chronology of the Metroid games? (spoilers free, if possible).

Thanks! ^_^

1. Super Metroid's still my favorite. More real exploration than Fusion, you weren't really told where to go as much, and most exploring wasn't limited to "bomb until you find it."

2. Depends on how good you are.

3. No. It takes place between Metroid 1 and 2.

4. This is all you really need to know: Metroid 1 -> Prime -> 2 -> Super Metroid -> Fusion. With the exception of Prime, they all have sequential numbers. Well, did. Metroid Fusion was originally known as Metroid IV, but I forget if it still says that in the intro. I know Super Metroid still does.

1. agreed with Grave. I played it the first and, since I didn't know anything about it, it was quite a "discovery"... There were the X-Ray visor and the grapling beam that Fusion doesn't have, too. And the atmosphere was sooo freakin' good (better than Fusion IMO)... Better music too, me thinks. And I don't like Samus' new design nor the ship. I'd put Fusion in the 2nd place though, very close.
But I warn you, playing the first Metroid after Super Metroid may be a little frustrating since most of Super's and Fusion's movements are missing, even some as elementary as ducking...

2. Depends on how good you are, on the percentage you wanna achieve, the time you wanna spend to get the different endings. I've read in many places though, that Fusion's indeed the shortest Metroid.

4. As Grave said. Grave: They say it's Metroid 4 in the intro, yes, and the plot shows it clearly. As for spoilers, you already have read a big one if you've got through Fusion (won't tell you where, of course)

The reason Metroid Fusion seems short is because getting the items required to progress to different areas are much easier to find this time around. In the others, you had to explore a lot more (and a lot of tedious/not so tedious shooting at every inch of wall you see) in order to find what you needed to get to the next area.

Well, that's the same in Fusion, i think. However, once you get the power bombs, just one or two per room discover nearly all the secrets of it...

BTW... 100% game done! (without faqs)
Now, to the speed playthrough!

Here is the Metroid story chronology, which means this is the sequence of the events over the whole game series:

Metroid (NES)
Metroid Prime (GC)
Metroid 2: The Return of Samus (Gameboy)
Super Metroid/Metroid III (SNES)
Metroid Fusion (GBA)

Hope this helps.

The other Metroid games don't really have an in-game story to follow. You look around and find stuff and make your way into new areas. That's about it. Find a door, find a way to get into the door, repeat.

It has a charm to it though. There's usually a lot of area to cover, and a lot of secret area to discover. You get the sense of exploration and discovery, and you don't have objectives to restrict your wandering.

Usually, the only thing keeping you from getting somewhere is finding the right weapon, not beating the boss or advancing the plot, which is relatively rare, if not somewhat unique.
