I CAN capture with this thing after all, but it's a pain in the ass, and I'm going to have to buy another VCR to do it. -_-
I use the ATI Video wonder card and have had no trouble capturing anyting be it VCR, TV or game system, although it comes with NO compression tools whatsoever so the file sizes are huge. You could fix that with some downloadable codec, but I never got around to dealing with it.
On the topic of useless support, my dial up service is pissing me off. About two weeks ago I suddenly couldn't get to my college website in order to check mail, news, etc. My college's network is pretty shitty so I thought it was down. However one of my friends IMed me and said he could connect fine. I checked at the local library and sure enough it was fine. So I called up the tech support and...
Me: Hello, I can't seem to get to a few sites on the Internet. Guy: Ok, have you tried [stuff I knew wasn't the problem]. Me: Um, yeah. Guy: I can't get to them either. Are you sure they work. Me: They work at every other connection I've tried. Guy: Uh, try setting up a DNS using [IP address] Me: Ok, thanks.
Doesn't work. I call back.
Me: Hi. I just called and someone told me to set up my connection to you DNS. Other guy: Ok. Try THESE numbers. Me: Uh, sure.
Doesn't work. I figure out that all sites I can't get to are 199.x.x.x IP addresses. I call back.
Me: Hi. I've called a couple times and I can't get to a couple sites. They all have a 199 IP address. Guy: Um, have you tried... Me: Yes. Guy: Ok, let me write a ticket and the tech guys will look into it... Me: Ok.
Two days later...
Me: Hi, I was wondering if you had any idea what was wrong. Lady: The tech guys said that you might be behind a firewall. Me: I have dial up. I have no firewall. Lady: Are you sure. Me: I think I'd know if I had a firewall (note: I didn't sound this snotty) Lady: Ok, they also said to erase your map files. He's how [instructions] Me: Ok I'll try that. Thanks.
Doesn't work. At this point, I know the problem is on their end and am just calling out of hope of them realizing it too and fixing the problem.
Me: Hi! Smae problem! Guy: Uh... Have you tried [stuff that lady said] Me: Yep. Guy: Wow. Haven't heard of this problem before. One sec. [HOLD] Guy: Uh hi. Yeah, apparently some of the guys at the parent company might be blocking some site. You should email them since we can't do anything. Here's that address... Me: Ok thanks!
Thinking I had gotten somewhere I emailed the abuse email about the problem. Two weeks later 199 IPs still don't work.

Well, now, it captures from regular video tapes, but if I record footage of a game and try and record THAT, guess what? No dice! Just what in God's name is going on???? Video games MUST be transmitted in some bizarre form... doesn't anybody know anything about video signals, and if so, is there some sort of converter I could buy to fix this problem? I tried the help line, and they were complete idiots...
Update: Got it to " capture " from ONE tape, but it's essentially a still photo with sound. Still no problems with any other tapes I've tried ( even tapes of things I've recorded off T.V., just to see if it was a " recording " issue )

quote: I still swear by the ATI-all-in-wonder card. It's a PCI card so you don't have to replace your main video card and it only costs about $40. Does it do captures, and would you happen to know its frame rate tolerance? I'm pretty sure I've figured out the problem; it's the frame rate. As previously mentioned, it won't capture from the tape, either... but if I " fast forward " or " rewind " the tape, I can capture fine ( the resulting movie isn't really worth viewing, though, and the program stinks and won't let me convert it to an mpeg )
I really can't say what the tolerance is, but I've had no problems capturing any kind of input into either image or movie files. That includes TV, VCR and consoles including my SNES, Dreamcast, PSX and PS2.
