CNN Money Thinks so, though given their game track record who knows if it's true...

Still, glad I've waited to pick one up if it's true...:)

Dang. I was hopping the new design would have 4 buttons... Nintendo had to know this thing would become a SNES port dumping ground when they designed it.

Oh well, the new design is pretty cool. It's like I'm playing Tactics Ogre on my cell phone.

EDIT: Now that I look at it some more it really is a neat product. I hate how the videogame industry moves in waves. For almost half a year, little to nothing has been released that I was interested in (not counting GC titles since I don't own one) and now in the space of about 2 months this new GBA, GGXX, .hack, Xenosaga, Devil Mag Cry 2, Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven, Breath of Fire DQ and theoretically (I know it's really not but for the sake of argument) FFXI.

This was like when Square dumped all those RPGs on us at once a few years ago. It's like everything I wanted in the PS2 is coming out all at once...

So this is the big super secret megaton announcement? I like it but I was expecting something like announcing new online support for the cube since at this point it seems that it was made only for one game and Nintendo seems to not want to do anything online at all.

But cant complain the new GBA is mighty neat looking, you betcha im gonna trade in the old one and get this new backlit one.

meh, call me old fashion or stupid but I just don't like it.

I don't like the clam shell shape and I've never had a problem with lighting (unless I played in a place that had no light sources, but that's my fault)...

ah, who am I kidding -__- once that sucker drops to $50 (I ain't spending another $100 for what's essentially a GBA stuffed into a pocket dictionary's shell with a built in afterburner) you know I'll be first in line to grab one.

Agree.

I like the old design better, and given that I play usually at well illuminated places, it's no problem for me... But good news for the rest. It's OK.

See, I was okay with my GBA too, but I'm willing to pay for an improvement when I see one. I had a GBA since a little before the US launch, and besides the lighting problem, I liked it a lot. Now some of my friends have them, and multiplayer games on it are AWESOME. Especially at work, hehe.

This is a big thing to me not only because of the light, but the size. I carry a lot of crap around in my pockets, and if I had to choose between iPod for music in study halls and whenever, or my GBA, I'll usually take my iPod because it's smaller and more comfortable to carry. Plus, that's a whole hell of a lot of music.

Plus, if I buy this, I can keep my old GBA at home... for use as a controller for the GC GB Player! Clever plot, Nintendo. Very clever!

This new one doesn't appear to support the e-Reader, though, so it's probably not for everyone. But I can see why they're releasing it... I know I want one.

Probably easy to break too. After thinking a bit, the clam design and its small size is making me uneasy.

Looks very cool, but I would have prefered that they would just add the backlit screen to the exisiting GBA design.

Still, This is a Good Thing ™

Edit: Now this is weird. From the Gamespot article:

"One notable difference between the two GBA models, besides their size, is the GBA SP's lack of a headphone jack. However, it will still be possible to use headphones with the system via a cable, sold separately, that will plug into the power-adapter port."

Um...

It's not backlit. I don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet, but it's front-lit, around the edges of the screen.

I'm very, VERY suspicious as to how good this will look. You can play a backlit GBA in pitch darkness. But front-lighting, around the edges...it would have to be a very strong light to reach the center of the screen, no matter how "integrated" this is.

Let's hope some "in action" pictures come out tomorrow.

looks neat! i'm a bit irritated at the moment to read any of the articles, but so far it looks awesome

only two things worry me about it: the headphones thing that Omar posted and the "front-lit" thing that Ven mentioned

still looks nice. let's see what happens with it

The headphone thing certainly bothers me, I hope the adapter for them is tiny and unobtrusive. However, the frontlight is a GOOD thing. If you've ever seen a GBA with an Afterburner in it, you can understand why. I don't know if there's a technological reason for why they chose a frontlight over a backlight, but I do know that it looks damn good. Not at all as washed out as, say, a Game Gear's backlit screen. But we're talking two entirely different kinds of screens, and..

Blah. I don't know, but Gamespot has hands on impressions, and they say it's good. I'll be throwing my cash down in March to see for myself, I guess.

Yea, I had major problems with the glary screen more than the picture being too dark. If I was more brave and just ripped the plastic cover off, I'd have no problem.

Speaking as an owner of the Afterburner, though, screen lighting really is great. Plus I like the clam design.

Easy to break, that's what I think, yes. Also, maybe more difficult to play with it, since the buttons and d-pad are too near now, about GB distance. That can be a pain when playing fighting games. And the design, I just don't like it, but that's subjetive.

On the good side, there's the light, of course, and also the fact that, being clam-type, the screen will be more protected. I have my GBA screen scratchless (is that a word? :P), but I have to be very carefull sometimes. There's also the size once closed, that makes it very easy to carry...

Well it's also true that Nintendo is going to continue to sell the original GBA. Which I think is great cause I like it better then this new GBA. I mean, I think the new GBA has a lot of great features and ideas, but it's just ugly (compared to the original GBA). Not to mention that i think the old GBA has better button placement. Maybe I'll change my mind once I try it out.

They said it comes close to comfort level as the GB Pocket and Color. I didn't particularly like either of those in terms of comfort (d-pad and buttons are far too close for my hands), so I'm disappointed. Having a rechargable battery come standard is nice though.

I don't see its design that ugly though, could be better but it's nice for me.

It's like that with any technology. It's far worse computers than it is with consoles. Once you think you have the best, something new and better comes along, so you better be sure you're happy with what you buy.

I don't think the GC successor is right around the corner, but yet another price drop could be. A redesign also seems unlikely, considering the GB Player coming out for the current model and all.
