It seems as of late, a bunch of decent Japanese shooters have been showing up on US shelves for $10, with horrible box art. So far I know Shienryu is available here as Geki-Oh Shooting King, and I picked up Sol Divide today.

Sol Divide was localized by a company called XS Games, and judging by the job they did on the buggy menu screens, I don't think they should ever be allowed to make their own games. But it's a pretty decent shooter, I'm not a huge Psikyo fan, but it's very playable and it'll keep me busy for a while. Ignore the hideous box art, it's worth grabbing.

I really hope somebody has the foresight to grab the US rights to DoDonPachi, while they're busy squeezing whatever money they can out of PS1 shooters.

Bleh. Whether or not you're a fan of Psikyo, stay far, far away from Sol Divide. It's absolutely awful, and a disgrace to the Psikyo name. The levels are ridiculously short, the enemies are poorly-done and repetitive, and the game just isn't fun. Go play Strikers 1945 or Sengoku Blade if you want good Psikyo.

Eh.. I think you're being a little hard on it, but the more I play the game, the more of this I see. It's very repetitive. Extremely so. That, and there's not much of a challenge to be had.

I wouldn't say it's terrible, especially not for $10, but... This would not have been my first choice of a shooter to bring to the US.

I agree that it's not fantastic, but for $10, I'll buy it. Though I've got it on saturn already...didn't even know there *was* a PSX port.

but...where did you find it?? I can't find it online, nor can I find XS games.

I picked it up at my local Electronics Boutique. I was scavenging the used PS games rack hoping to come across Raycrisis or Dino Crisis 2 or something I really wanted, and I saw it, so I grabbed it. EB's website has it, too.

I doubt it's gonna sell a ton, but I'd like people to pick it up if they're even vaguely interested. The US box art is disgusting, but if people know they name, they'll check it out. And that might help clear the way for more and better shooters to trickle over.

I wish.

Interesting thing I found tonight.

I decided to give the game another go, as underwhelming as it is, and play the original mode. Well, I'm gonna assume in the original version, you could save. That would make this mode actually kinda decent. However... in the US release, you can't. Making it basically pointless.

I'm a little irritated. But still.. $10.

No, forget that. It doesn't make a lot of sense. But XS Games really doesn't seem like a bunch who'd know what they're doing, judging from the menu problems.

something rather strange; at my local EB it was sold out!

I don't know if the original psx version saved...I didn't even know it had come out for PS, I thought it was Saturn exclusive. And...I can't remember if my saturn version saves either, so I'm useless. but I *think* it does not.

Strange and stranger. The original mode seems senseless if you'd always have to start over... What's the point of teleporting back to the throne room and storing items? I have to think you'd be able to save, but maybe not...

And the more I play this game, the less I like it. Usually it's the other way around... but no, this is a pretty crappy shooter, heheh. Playable, yes, but... damn. I need another new shooter already!

well - electronics boutique is supposed to be stocking Sol Divide. Check out my conversation with a staff member there today:

Me: Do you have Sol Divide?

Him: for what system?

Me: Playstation. it just came out (I spelled it for him)

Him: that's an old game...it's discontinued.

Me: no, it just came out this week.

Him: No, it's old, that's why it's 9.99. If it were new, it'd be 29.99 or more.

Me: No, I'm telling you it was released this year, 2003. It came out a while ago in japan, but...

Him: No, it's discontinued, it was one of the first games for the playstation, a launch title.

Me: Never mind.

He was probably thinking of Zero Divide. That old fighting game, kinda like VF with robots... Blah. But hardly any budget PS titles released are $30 or so, tons for $10. Why are retail employees still dumber than even the average GameFAQs board user?

People like that I could do without.

And yeah, EB's the only store I've seen it at so far, and their website has it, if you can't find it locally. Still, it's not really worth going out on a limb for, unless it's to satisfy your curiousity. I didn't realize how painfully mediocre it was at first.

I'm playing Sol Divide on PS2. In the set keys options the cursor was all blinky and warped and didn't highlight which button was being pointed at. I also think I saw warping somewhere in the intro. Anyone else notice this problem or is my CD defective? Thanks

Nothing abnormal there. I haven't quite figured out if it's PS2 or the port yet, but considering most of the menus do it, I'm assuming it's the port. XS Games isn't exactly a trustworthy, reputable name, hehe. Still, it's easy enough to navigate them...
