OK, 2002 was a dreammatch and 2003 will be the beginning of a new story. that means much of the characters involved in the past arc will be erased to make room for the new characters. After 97, the Orochies died, and Billy and Chizuru vanished. Who do you think will leave us definitively until the next dreammatch? (KOF 2006?^^)
I think K9999 will go. He has nothing to do in the game now. If K', Whip, Maxima and Kula stay, it will surely depend on the size they choose for the teams (if they keep 4 characters, they will stay, if no, one will go... I think Kula is the most likable to go). I think Anhel will join the girl team and stay somehow in the game (and if someone has to leave, it will be Hinako, Kasumi and/or Xianfei ; or they will appear one after the other). I would definitively like they erase some old characters (something like in the NGP games : a southtown team with Terry, Ryo and Kim, for example, and farewell Andy, Joe, Robert and Takuma). I think they would better erase some Garou/Ryuko characters if it saves space to keep Vanessa, Seth and Ramon, for example... If the old teams stay the same, then those 3 will go too. And even if it is really painfull for me, for who Terry and her are the worst characters ever created in any game of any genre, I'm sure May lee is here to stay.

I hope that the whole Dragon Kensu thing is expanded on since the China team gets overshadowed every game. Plus Athena needs to grow some of her hair back.
If they need to get rid of some characters, they can scrap that god forsaken Kyokugen team. Plotwise their bus could careen off a cliff or something unoriginal and fitting of their derivative nature.
I hope they keep some of the newer characters since those are usually the only ones whose sprites are current. I like Kula and Angel is interesting enough to keep around.
I agree that some of the Fatal Fury team needs to be put to rest. Also if they are going to keep using Iori, redesign him a little. For such an important character’s he’s evolved very little over ten years.

I want to see some KOF EX characters. Moe, Reiji, Miu, heck, even Jun can come along. I'd expect each to get a few more attacks than they were given in the EX games, though. Especially Jun, judging from what people have said.
As for new characters, I'd like to see someone with Jeet Kune Do as his/her fighting style. It'd be even cooler if the character wasn't Asian. Maybe someone like Lisa Silverman from Persona 2. An American who lived or lives in an Asian country and has a confused cultural identity.
Apart from Jeet Kune Do, something like the animal styles of Kung Fu (SNAKE! MONKEY! PLEASE!) wouldn't be bad, either. Or some kind of Chinese martial art that hasn't been done yet. What about T'ai Chi Chuan? That one hasn't been in yet. There are probably plenty of other possibilities.
I'd also like someone with a very casual fighting style. Like one where the attacks don't even look too dangerous but are. And perhaps a counter where the other fighter's arm gets grabbed out of nowhere and he/she is flipped to the ground.
More weapons-based fighters doesn't seem like such a bad idea to me. A gun-based fighter sounds bad, but if implemented correctly, he/she would be kickass. Like something where a certain amount of bullets are displayed by his/her DM meter and having specials use bullets up. When they run out, doing any special requiring bullets automatically reloads. Or maybe someone who uses a knife or something that's not too deadly of a weapon.
I don't know if KOF needs any new grapplers. I mean, I don't think Daimon will be in next year, but there's still Clark, Ramon, Hinako (not too likely, though )...okay, maybe there aren't so many. In that case...I want an American pro-wrestling character. With a proper lariat attack like Shermie had in Gals Fighters.
And finally, how about someone with power over water? Or light? Or sound? Some interesting new kind of energy-based attacker. Enough fire-throwers, ferchrissakes. And no, Sogetsu Kazama is not enough.
You'd best visit. It's finally back! http://snakeshole.go-dream.com

If Eolith tries to stick to the story (based on how things were left in 2k1):
Foxy's dead (hooray!) K'/Kula/Whip together Shingo seperated from Team Japan, possibly teamed w/Saisyu Iori w/ a different team or alone Likewise, Vanessa/Seth/Ramon could be dead (Iori has a bad habit of killing off his partners) Mary/Terry together Robert's pissed off, so maybe he'll leave Kyokugen
2003 could go a million different ways. Here's to hoping it's not as bad as '99 was (the beginning of the last story cycle).

I'd like the new saga to have an original and well worked story, that is:
- no great power source who everyone seeks, even though I know there's no point asking that (Bao's/Kensou's Dragon Spirit)
- no god wannabe bad guy again, even though I know there's no point asking that (Long, Misty)
- no contradictions, even though I know there's no point asking that.
- and please, snkneogeousaorwhoeverwhotakeschargeofit, no occidental version changes, even though I know there's no point asking that.
- no eventual plot simplifyings into gathering all the powers from the fighters during the tourney, even though I know there's no point asking that.
There's more but I know there would be no point asking it.

I always thought it would be nice if they had a "Joe Team" made up of Joe Higashi, Hai Jwa (is that spelled right?), and Billy Kane (I assume storyline wise he'd make some kind of deal with Joe to help round out his team if Joe kept his greasy mits away from Lily)... if the games back to 4 on 4 King could be there too, since Joe apprciates his fellow Muay Thai's commitment to the KoF series, even if the lady team eschew their great leader for a Janey-come-lately-TDK-fighter and Yuri tricked her off the AoF team.
If Joe's off the Fatal Fury Team, in a 3-on-3 game Rock could team with Terry and Mary while Andy and Mai team with Hokotomaru... if it' 4-on-4 just drop the little boys from Garou and it's Terry, Mary, Andy, and Mai.
If Mary and Billy and their own teams, poor Yamazaki would become the new Eiji and be left sad and forgotten... so obviously they would team up to beat up Billy, Mary, Iori, and anyone else who dropped the from their team... they could team with Lin (upset his 'friend' Seth would leave him for Vanessa and Ramon come 2k2) or maybe the Jin brothers (they know Ryuji, right?) or maybe they could mix and match and be one Jin (Chon Shu probably... the one in blue, he looks to be the more pissy/willing to fight of the two) with the other appearing only in DM's and Lin!

But anyway, now... I heard from a Playmore programmer on a secret hidden message board (sorry, can't reveal the location, and they probably changed the password, anyway)that the aliens from Psycho Soldier are going to come back, and they will try and get revenge on Athena and co. for their horrible defeat back when Athena was in high school, and then Kensou's true " dragon power " will manifest itself, and he'll destroy them all!! Misty and Ron will continue to watch, while Ron has Misty build a " Dragon power transfer " machine out of old NESTS equipment, so Ron can transfer the power to himself in 2004!!!!
Oh, yeah, K', Kula, Maxima, and Whip will still be in it ( actually, I think it's likely most of them really will, they're pretty popular... Whip will just get dumped in the women's team, or something). The USA Sports team will come back as well, in an effort to prove American sports are still the most powerful fighting techniques in the world. Brian Battler will be gone, though, and will be replaced by a mysterious new character who is alleged to be a baseball player.

Interesting. Very interesting.
Wonder if they'll give Heavy D! a new look.
I like K' and Kula(I used them for an av). They're pretty cool. I don't care for Maxima or Whip.

Really? My secret Playmore source says that there going to go with a Hockey theme on the sports team, so they can dominate the Canadian fight game market. There are also plans to get Don Cherry as a mid boss, though that would be a most impossible fight...
But he couldn't confirm what I wanted to hear, that Geese Howard would be back and taking names...

Yes, the Aliens are set in stone. And some are made from Stone even!
As for the boss, in addition to size their also going to have him stealing power from various other KOF bosses, using the Dragon power. So he'll have a variety of signature moves, including Geese's Raging storm (But souped up...)

I used to work at Playmore. KoF 2003 will not be a direct continuation of the Nests story, however several Nests characters will remain and slip into the background like Iori and Kyo. However, Ron is still interested in Bao/Kensou's "Dragon power". Misty will play a slightly larger role in the game. At this stage of development, Ron, Misty, and Diana are currently not playable characters. Several characters from the previous Athena games will return. Not including bosses, or other characters you may have seen drawings of already, there are 3-4 new characters with designs already completed. The strikers are staying gone. A new game play system will be implemented. At first they were going to do something like 2002 with a special mode allowing for combos, but they are trying to change directions a bit more. Art of Fighting team, especially Takuma and The Invincible Dragon, will play a bit more of a story roll than usual this time around.
Spoiler (Highlight to view) - This may be Takuma's final game as a playable character.
End of Spoiler
Jhun has of course recovered and has returned, but not on the same team this time. Following Athena's new roll in the game will be Jhun chasing behind once again (he hasn't learned his lesson). Jhun is slightly more hard ass after his accident, and likes Kaphwan less this time. Currently he has one new move where he uses his arms but not for punching or grabbing. Playmore is excited about reusing Jhun because of his two year absence. The mood is to incorporate more story into this game because we feel the last couple games were a bit lacking. Unlike other KOF sagas, storylines will be continued from past games in a stronger sense, however this is still wanted to be a new saga and a new chapter for KOF. Playmore wants to demonstreight to the world that they are using their vast intelectual properties to profit as much as possible. They are also totally aware of their fans and want to give them something that long term KOF fans have come to expect and will be satisfied with. There was talk of reusing some fighting game characters that hadn't been in KOF yet, but so far only characters from non-fighting games have been planed for introduction to KOF. The hardware is still NEOGEO. The saga is planned for three games, one each year, that will all be on NEOGEO. The idea of using additional processing power is not ruled out and is being researched for possible incorporation. Eolith is one of the investors but are not involved creatively.

This is almost too depressing, but here goes:
Worst case scenario Emboldened by the tremendous outpouring of forgiveness over the booting of King and others...well, by some players, anyway...the KOF company du jour (henceforth known as CDJ) promises to go even further in '03. To wit, the removal of all characters who "aren't doing anything storywise" or "just plain suck". CDJ will avoid mentioning the fact that the reason none of these characters are doing anything storywise is that the focus of KOF has become so incredibly narrow, hardly anyone has a story anymore. The question of who's going to replace these "old" characters (who were allowed to stick around because they were popular to play as, don't forget) will be similarly disregarded.
Terry, Andy, Joe, Takuma, Ryo, Robert, Yuri, et al. are given the boot. CDJ also kills off Bao messily before '03 even begins, thus pleasing legions of fans who have yet to give one damn reason he shouldn't be in KOF that makes even a milligram of sense. Chin also dies because he's, well, too old. This leaves Athena and Sie without a team, so they and their juvenile antics are out. Which is kinda a relief, since they're 24 and 26 respectively, not to mention professional musicians for the past six-plus years, and really should be past this crap by now. Tetsuo-in-everything-but-name proves to be utterly-meaningless-in-everything-but-the-'02-story, and he quietly fades away. So does Angel; CDJ comments that "they never really liked her anyway". Of course, they also decree that one measly drill attack that does like 15% damage in a fight IS enough to kill Foxy, and she stays dead because anyone who's believed to be dead really is dead. Says so in the rules.
Kyo and Iori stay. Because Kyo and Iori always stay.
All the departures make way for...uh...some guys you've never heard about, who are going to play a pivotal role in...uh...well, probably a follow-up to the Orochi saga, because it's painfully obvious that that's all anyone ever cared about. Storywise. For reasons inexplicable to all. But if that's what they players want, CDJ certainly isn't going to deny it to them.
Of course, we can't have anyone tied to the original Orochi saga, because, well, they're dead, and Death Is Forever (Never Mind Geese And Rugal, They Just Don't Count For Some Reason). So that leaves us...uh...a new batch of totally original characters. With moves we've never seen before, of course, since clones are a baaaad thing. Considering that we've already seen K9999, Angel, Li Xiangfei, Maxima, Chin Gentsai, Mai Shiranui, Whip, Leona, Choi Bounge, Chang Koehan, Jun Hoon, etc. etc., they're gonna have to dig deep.
To recap: Completely gutted cast, no familiar faces, no familiar fighting styles, rehashed story (that ends in unavoidable tragedy, of course), probable rehashed engine. And nearly every popular character tossed due to being "too old" or "dead". Oh yeah, and some boss who doesn't give a damn about the tournament and wants to gather energy and stuff. And CDJ will pat themselves on the back and proclaim that they've made the perfect game, which is everything any fighting gamer could ever want.
After the dismal sales figures come in, CDJ finally realizes that the KOF story (and its bazillion and two hang-ups) is much too FUBAR to salvage at this point, and killing off the old favorites and anyone who's the tiniest bit unconvential has utterly ruined the game. They make an official press statement saying that the whole tournament got sucked into a time anomaly, meaning that it will be nothing but Dream Matches for all eternity.
Best case scenario CDJ makes a long, long overdue transition to an up-to-date hardware board. King rediscovers her fighting spirit and returns. Everyone else who wanted to be in it also returns. Bao is in and healthy as ever, and the Dragon Spirit storyline is full speed ahead. '03 is the proud, grand spectacle KOF was supposed to be.
And since KOF has a fresh new beginning, CDJ does away with the hang-ups of the past. The tournament truly has a clean slate now.

I SINCERELY doubt that. The largest number of new characters I'd ever expect to see in a KOF would be about 6, and that's pushing it. Can't very well drop so many people in one shot, and many of the people you listed as them dropping are quite popular ( especially Athena ), so I don't forsee them going, ever. Eolith's license on KOF has expired, anyway, so unless Playmore licenses it out to them again, they're done with it, and May Lee will probably go.

Really? I thought Playmore would have the rights to the characters created for 2k1 unless Eolith managed to word the contract that way (Which would be a very sneaky way of launching a new fight game...).
And yes, I don't see the core lineup of characters changing too much in the next KOF. There still popular, and have way too many fans for them to go away. But I do think we'll see a bit more of a lineup shakeup, with more new characters than in most other KOF's...(Just a gut feeling, but I expect 10 new characters...And maybe an advance in time of a few years...).

My idea of cast for KOF 2003 :
- Kyo, Beni, Goro - Terry, B.Mary, Rock - Andy, Mai, Joe - Ryo, Robert, Marco - King, Yuri, Kasumi - Athena, Kensou, Bao - Leona, Clark, Ralf - Kim, Jhun, Jinju - Choi, Chang, Baedal - Saisyu, Shingo, Syo - Iori, Lin, "new guy" - K', Whip, Maxima - K9999, Angel, Kula
I hope especially that some characters will have new clothes (like Iori, Terry or Whip [why she keeps the army clothes ?] ... etc.)
Omae mo kiita darou ? ... Kaze no Koe !

quote: OK, 2002 was a dreammatch and 2003 will be the beginning of a new story. that means much of the characters involved in the past arc will be erased to make room for the new characters.
Playmore not only wants to satisfy the fans but surprise them too. Sorry, Eolith did make creative contributions, but they were made durring the last 3 years, and were ideas that were held over for the next saga. In addition to Eolith and The Neo Group, there are 2 companies we have agreed with to cooperate in this game. One of them you've all probably heard of, the other one probably few or none will know. Sorry if my English is not very good, I am still learning. The possibility of alien entities and WAD agency activities has alarmed Heidern. Gekko and Axe will be featured. The actual cause of Kyo and Iori's personal feud (not the family one) will be revealed. This has already been planned by previous SNK teams for some time but wasn't implemented into a KOF yet. The working title is The King of Fighters 2003.
Foxy's clan will have a very bitter rivalry with Lin's clan. The leader of Foxy's clan is apparently assasinated. Lin's clan has appointed a new leader in their own's absense.
They're introducing the new " varied rotation " system, although I don't know what it is yet. ;D

Clones? Time travel?
No way! The next KOF is back to basics. What made KOF so popular was how everyone was related to each other. The next KOF storyline will be about how everyone is related together. Like a soap opera. It will center around NESTS searching for the Dragon Power. And a lot of people will die because that is shocking and shocking people is also very popular. Also, there will be a lot of special boss fights because that is popular too!
Here is a list of the major revelations and deaths in the next KOF. People are killed too! I included spoilers too.
Revelation #1- Kyo's True Parentage and The Japan Team is Changed!
Spoiler (Highlight to view) - Upon reaching the final battle with the new boss, the Japan team suffers. If you play as the Japan team (Kyo, Goro, Beni) you face a special boss fight. Goro and Beni die at the hands of the new boss and you have to fight the new boss as only Kyo. But don't worry, Kyo got 3 new moves. Anyway, before Goro dies, he tells Kyo that he is his true father. Before Beni dies, he tells him that he is his uncle. He just looks young because he is vain.
End of Spoiler
Revelation #2- The Lone Wolf Faces a Test and His Secret Past Returns!
Spoiler (Highlight to view) - If you play as the Garou team you get a special boss fight. When you reach the boss, he will steal Terry's jacket and hat. The boss will then say that Terry has no real skill or power, and that he depends on these two magical artifacts to be a great fighter. Terry loses his confidence. And for one round he has to fight a mini-boss without his jacket and hat. During this fight he has very weak specials and no SDMs. If he does well, he regains his confidence and his jacket and hat. If he does bad, well, he's stuck like this in the final boss fight. The next KOF will deal with the history behind Terry's magical hat and jacket. They are magical, but Terry also has skill.
End of Spoiler
Revelation #3- Takuma is Humbled and Changed!
Spoiler (Highlight to view) - In 2K3, Takuma will become very powerful. There will be two versions of him. The regular version will have 9 specials and 5 SDMs. He will be very powerful. The secret Takuma will only have 3 specials and 1 SDM. He will also be very powerful. In AOF team storyline, Takuma gets tired of being in the joke team and getting no glory. So he becomes super powerful. When you reach the boss as the AOF team, he tells Ryo and Robert that they are worthless and that he will defeat the boss alone. So you must fight the boss as only Takuma. When you defeat the boss, the boss says something like, Takuma, you should be more humble. So the boss shoots Takuma with a de-aging ray and makes Takuma into a 15 year-old boy with crappy fighting skill. Now Ryo has to train Takuma and he has a lot of fun doing so!
End of Spoiler
Revelation #4- The Ikari Brothers Make the Ultimate Sacrafice! And they have Big Secret Past too!
Spoiler (Highlight to view) - Upon reaching the boss fight with the Ikari team, Clark is almost dead and Leona is seriously wounded. Heidern is mortally wounded (he is unplayable but in the story he dies.) Before Heidern dies, he tells Ralf that he is their only hope at defeating the boss. He tells him that in order to defeat the boss and save Clark's life that he must do the merge dance with Clark. He explains that Clark and Ralf came from the same person but that long time ago (before KOF) Heidern needed more soldiers so he split them into two. Now they need to re-merge. So Clark and Ralf do the re-merge dance and become Clarf or Rark (depending on how you fight beforehand). Anyway you get all the moves from both characters and a new sprite and must face the final boss alone as Clarf/Rark. He stays like this forever now. No more Clark and Ralf in KOF.
End of Spoiler
Revelation #5- Bao Does Something Bad! And an Old Evil Returns!
Spoiler (Highlight to view) - Because he is so unpopular, Bao makes a secret pact with Orochi. He asks Orochi to make him popular and in exchange, Orochi can use his body for a limited time. So now Bao has and HSDM where Orochi takes over his body, during the HSDM you lose control of Bao but Orochi does an unblockable auto combo on your opponent anyway! Before the boss fight Kensou and Athena find out what he did and kick Bao out of the team. Bao then must face the boss alone! The next KOF will also deal with the ramifications of Bao's bad decision! He becomes the leader of the Zombie New Face Team in 2K4.
End of Spoiler
Last Revelation- Iori Becomes Serious and Gets a New Rival!
Spoiler (Highlight to view) - Kagura (what's her name) comes to Iori in a vision and tells him what Bao did. So Iori, getting fed up with Kyo's antics, stops being Kyo's rival and instead becomes serious and starts hunting Bao and becomes Bao's rival. Bao is like totally afraid of Iori but he really messed up with that deal he made with Orochi. In the intro demo you will see a lot of Iori vs. Bao stuff. Now you know why they put that in.
End of Spoiler
Anyway, that is all I can reveal today. Maybe more revelations in the middle of the week.
