Since I have finally taken back my PS1 which my brother "borrowed" for two years and I have more free time on my hands, I want to catch up on some PS1 RPG goodness; so I'm wondering what are your 5 favourite RPGs for the console?

Mine would be, in no particular order:

- Tales of Eternia
- Valkyrie Profile
- Lunar 2
- Xenogears
- Persona 2

Also, hats off to Rhapsody, a very light and funny rpg which I'm playing right now ^^

Yeah I still haven't completed all my PS1 rpgs yet... I don't like to start a new RPG until I finish the one before, and with my schedule it usually takes me several months to complete one. My favorites have been

Tales of Destiny 2(Eternia)
Dragon Warrior 7
Chrono Cross
Grandia (well technically it's a remake of a saturn game)
Final Fantasy Tactics

Here's looking at you... Onime.

Good grief, tough choice. So many good ones... Hmmm, I'd have to go with:

- Chrono Cross
- FF Tactics (strat-RPGs count, right?)
- Suikoden II
- FF7 (While it doesn't stand up to scrutiny as well as the other ones, you can't deny its importance)
- Grandia (but only in Japanese, the wretched dub makes me wanna scratch out my eyes)

Ta da!

I'm just gonna list the ones I enjoyed playing the most.

-Persona 2
-Chrono Cross
-Castlevania: SoTN (hey, GameFAQs lists it as an RPG!)
-Suikoden II
-Wild Arms

In no particular order:
-Valkyrie Profile
-FF7
-FFT
-Xenogears
-Can't think of a fifth; I'm trying to avoid games that came out for other systems first.
Maybe Koudelka, just because the overall feel is so unique.

Persona 2
Persona (even though it was butchered)
Valkerie Profile
Tactics Ogre
Lunar SSSC/EB (tie since EB was a better game, but I had more fun with SSSC for some reason)

Although SOTN is one of my favorite games, I consider it more of an action game with RPG elements so I didn't include it in my list, although the definition of what makes an RPG is always debated so that shouldn't stop others from includeing it in their's.

In order:

- FFT
- FFIX
- Vagrant Story (does it count as an RPG?): I'm playing it this Christmas, and so far I love it.
- FFVII

Since I have played only another PSX rpg (FFVIII), and I don't consider it very good, I'll skip the fifth.

Edit: AAAaaagh! Id Castlevania: SOTN counts, add it to my list! Awesome, awesome game!

pffff... nobody liked Legend of Mana here? To me it was the best Square game in the PS1 era, and the best of the series too... well, here I go anyway.

Dragon Quest 7
Valkyrie Profile
Legend of Mana
Persona 2 Innocent Sin / Eternal Punishment
Star Ocean Second Story

ok...

Tales of Eternia
Brave Prove
Parasite Eve
Legend of Heroes 3; White Witch (Must have one from Falcom, of course ^_^)
fftactics

not hard choices for me...I don't like too many PS1 rpgs, Saturn or PCE is my system of choice for that.

I'd have picked Symphony of the night, but I like the Saturn version much better.

Some might say I should have done the same with Legend of Heroes 3; white witch, but the game isn't significantly different on the two consoles.

COOL. I thought I was the only person who preferred the saturn port. I remember it got bad reviews and stuff, but all the added levels and characters made up for the crappy transparencies and load times.

but from what I know I'd say:

- Xenogears (nope, wanna play it and perhaps I'll be able soon)
- PE (same as above)
- FFVII
- Valkyrie (same, argh)
- No fifth, perhaps CC.

Not in order since I haven't played most of them. I've played FF8 and 9 but I wouldn't include 'em

yes, absolutely. actually I reviewed it myself a long while back, so it got at least one good review! heh. but yeah, the extra items, bosses, etc etc...if you want more castlevania for your buck it's the only way to go!!

only thing that bugged me about it was the slowdown :/

I'd say it's worth it just for the " head tree " in the underground garden ( ha ha ha.. ^_^ ) Seriously, though, I really like the " cursed prison ". I know it's kind of insignificant, but.. it's cool.

Koudelka

(The other ones I've played, I'd like to think that they wouldn't be in a top 5 RPGs list, so there is the assumption that there's 4 more RPGs I haven't played yet that could be in the top 5...)

Most of them have been said already but IM GOING TO SAY THEM ANYWAY.

Valkyrie Profile
Final Fantasy Tactics
Xenogears
Star Ocean Second Story (despite the HOOORRRIBLE voice acting.)
Final Fantasy 7.

Special mention goes to tales series. Tales and Valkyrie have the most fun battle systems in my distorted opinion. I wish they translated and brought over all the tales games, but is not gonna happen, and i will never learn Japanese. WHO WANTS SOME MEAT?

yeah you do, "I am the wind" right? OOH I just remembered the other reason why I liked the saturn version better: it had that jukebox to go through and play all the songs, including the AWESOME REMIXES of classic castlevania songs like bloody tears and vampire killer.

Yes, that rendition is Bloody Tears is excellent. Shame they only use it for the one boss.

Yeah, I found Rhapsody for about USD$5.00 just the other day!
It's a very nice game, although if you're one for difficult battles and dungeon exploration this game isn't for you.
Also, "cute" just barely describes this game; after playing it, you'll be melting with sugar ^_^;;

Some highlights of this rpg:
1) get to listen to lots of songs which are selectable in the menu
2) battle is so easy, there are NO items or spells to resurrect your characters
3) it has very very damaging charge up spells like flan, pancake, cake attack ^^
