Are yoo people happy with how the FF-series has developed till now?
Me, I'm one of those who think that FF6 is the holly grail and has never been reached again, but then again that's just me.

Anyhow, I liked FF7 very much but I tought that
Kefka really raised the bar as how cool evil can be (not to forget that awfully great laugh of him) and he has never been rached again. Also, that you had this feeling that the game was just starting where other games end (flying continent- new world) has not been reached.
But what bugs me most about the direction the series has taken, is this interactive-movie stuff, it's somehow too linear to me. I really can't wait for fully 3D cities (hopefully FFChrystal will be fully 3D) and landscape, so I can explore every corner without triggering a cineastic scene and without not beeing able to go back. Also, I allways loved the old art, both covers and character portraits and felt that the new direction was too much a compromise for a western breaktrough. I never finished FF8 because of the linearity of the game and even FF9 that was going to be more japanese somehow felt linear. FF10 I only rented and played it for two days, till I had enough eye candy. I think that chorono cross has taken the crown away from FF as Squares best series
(tough I can't rate FF11).
Also, that the director of the series sort of left the series character after FF7, in order to reach a wider audience ("love story") felt so compromised to me (and eventually led to the FF-movie).
What further bugs me is FF-X2. Yes there is allways people that buy sequels, and probably even I would get a FF6 sequel, but I think it's a mistake- was it not one of the greatest things about FF that every game was an universe of it's own?
I really hope once square has made enough money they'll get the series back at where it once was. I can't say for sure, but FFCrystal seems to be what I'm hoping for...

To talk about the direction that the FF games have taken...

By your post it might appear that the Final Fantasy games eveloped from simple concepts 'till their pick in FF VI. That's incorrect.
Once playing deeply the first Five FF you realize that the have almost no relation to Final Fantasy VI; though many concepts are kept & improved, you MUST notice that the first five FF games are games about "childlist heroes that are meant to win" with family values, and a nice & big flower garden, in FF VI things changes changing to a more realist context of search for the own self, the persona behind the characters plus original tematichs on a changing plot.

I see every Final Fantasy game after VI as an individual universe because the was the greatest achievement of FF VI: the game did left behind the whole "knight" concept adopting a more interesting face.

Of course, I have enjoyed greatly FF VI, thus my choice of it as the best in the series.

OK; that's my rant

I don't really mind the games. I'm actually rather happy with them the way they are. The only thing that bugs me is FFX2. o_O That's going a little far... But still... I'm almost positive that it won't be a terrible game.

As for Kefka... I have a personal grudge out for that character. ¬_¬ He actually annoys me.. despite his exil. (Usually that's and upside.) But it seems EVERY FF evil guy compatability quiz my friends give me I end upw ith Kefka... -_- And it's just not fair. Stupid evil compatability. ¬_¬

Scared fanboys, how much I enjoy it...
>:)

Funny thing, that most of Square fanboys didn't started liking it until the series actually changed, in FFVI/VII. And that's why the game that returned a bit to its roots (FFIX) wasn't as popular.

You can't really say whether or not the series is headed in the "right" direction, since there's a lot of argument surrounding what the right direction actually is.

But what the thread is really about I suppose is if you are happy with the way the series is turning out. Personally, I'm kind of drifing away from the main series.

Final Fantasy had been one of my reasons for gaming 'back in the day' (when FFIV and FFVI defined the series for North America), and I still think they're great games (well... VI I'd say is great). I enjoyed VII a lot, but didn't dig the materia concept too much.

It took me a while to make up my mind, but by the time I finished it I didn't like VIII over VII. The junction system was one of the primary reasons... I won't even start. Don't care to discuss it.

At this point in history I'm starting to dig SRPGs a lot more than straight RPGs with boring traditional battle systems (VP definitely an exception).

IX I liked a lot, at first, but while it had defining skills (jump for Freya, steal for Zidane) for the characters, I wasn't fond of the half-SD design or story or straightforward battle system. Out of all the FF games, I probably remember the fewest details of IX... even though I played it most recently and enjoyed it more than VIII. It was more of a meta-RPG than its own game. Hell, Chrono Cross could have been FFIX with a few changes... (I did dig CC btw)

Wait, what am I talking about here? Oh yeah. X I rented, didn't compel me to buy/finish it. X-2: The battle system tweaks sound interesting, I'm a fan of job changing, but I doubt I'd buy or finish it.

FFXI, FFTA, and XII are what I'm looking forward to, the first because MMORPGS are good ways to waste time with remote friends, the second because I f*ing love SRPGs and this one looks exquisite, and the last because of Yasumi Matsuno.

For me the future of the series lies with FFXII... if it's not radically different Final Fantasy will probably gracefully drop from my "favorite series (plural)" list.
