How much money does Nintendo make off the handheld market? While the N64 and the GC may not have the market dominance that previous consoles enjoyed, Nintendo has pretty much had a lock-down on the handheld market with both the GB and the GBA. Does that level of control translate into a high profit margin?

I think Nintendo would have managed to at least keep its head above water without the Game Boy, but it certainly helps that they have it.

For the past several weeks up to early november, the GBA has been consistently outselling the PS2 by a considerable margin in Japan. I imagine even more are being sold now that Ruby/Sapphire and Rockman.EXE 3 are out over there. Last I heard, some twenty million GBAs were sold worldwide. You can bet Nintendo's making quite the nest egg off of those things.

Manufacturing GBA's is probably like printing money for nintendo. I'm sure they make a profit off the system and I know they rake in tons of cash from the royalties of the games they license for the system. The gameboy is like a never ending gold mine for Nintendo. And what's so cool is that its relatively cheap. A GBA is like $70 now? Even without a real competitor in the handheld market the GBA remains competitively priced. What's even better then that is its a great system to make kids appreciate 2D gaming. A new generation of kids will appreciate SNES Zelda on the GBA. And on top of that the GBA has no territorial lockouts. Its the near perfect system- and near impossible to compete with!

As long as Nintendo keeps the gameboy legacy alive, they will never have to worry about a thing. Backward compatibility and well paced hardware updates is all they need.

Which makes me think, when the GB hardware gets its next upgrade, will it be as powerful as an N64? So far the Gameboy hardware has always been two steps behind the home console hardware.

GB= B&W NES, already had SNES at home
GBC= NES, already had N64 at home
GBA= SNES+, already have a GC at home
GBA2= N64?, next Nintendo console

Now imagine this. Wouldn't it be cool if the GC discs were also designed to be small so that a future GBA could use them?

They probably make a good amou8nt on Hardware, since it's not really new hardware (Just a souped up SNEs shrunk down). Probably have one of the better profit ratios on hardware out there.

As for Software? GBA soft sells very well so Nintendo makes good money that way. Especially Pokemon, which has sold 2 million units in Japan alone (for the 2 games...).
