"(art sorta) copyright question" , posted Tue 17 Dec 05:04post reply

hey, i see on a lot of sites, especially art sites, stating (not in so many words) "THIS IS MINE COPYRIGHTED 19XX or 20XX YOU CANT HAVE IT!" so i was wondering, how can they do this? for example, if i were to create an original piece of work and place it on the web somewhere, could i just write all that copyright gibberish next to it and claim it, or do i have to uh (this will sound very lame) "sign up somewhere" to get that piece of work protected?

Technically anything you create and put on the web is copyrighted by you and people must ask your permission to take it. Realistically it waters down to how much time the creator has to track down people and sue them.

Under US copyright law any work you create is instantly copyrighted when it is created (ideas don't count). Copyright statements are generally a good idea because they strengthen your claim.

You can register a work with the copyright office for a nominal fee (under $20 I believe); it is not necessary to claim a copyright, but it does strengthen your claim should you need to go to court.

The section on copyright law //www.ssrn.com/update/lsn/cyberspace/csl_lessons.html" TARGET=_blank>HERE may be useful to you.

Brocken Link....

Remember that copyright laws are different depending on the country bestowed upon them.
In the case of draws you can construct your website to inhabilate the "left click" of the mouse, but if the guy needs how to make websites using only notepad (he knows the java script & everything thus he doesn't need any program like front page); a guy with the knowledge can "hack" your page saving the code in his HDD and get the pictures.

Seriously. I had to create this stupid presentation for a professor a while back where I had to make a movie of a bunch of paintings set to music (don't ask). This one site had pretty much every one I needed but had one of those stupid "right click disabled" javascripts running. It was fairly easy to view the source, find where the image directory was and figure out the pretty obvious naming pattern.

I don't feel guilty since technically viewing the image downloads the file to my cache and if I wanted I could have looked through my IE folder and gotten the pictures from there. Plus this was a non profit and totally stupid project.

Yup. Art, guide, any item you create and place it on the web is copyrighted by you. Thus, people need your permission to take it if they plan to put it on their site.

I guess that the guy just wanted "safe-guard" the satisfaction of work all by himself.... Indeed, it wasn't for anything important thus this one should be locked on a closet. ¬_¬

aw, i even copied and pasted what looked like the url and the site doesn't work. but no worries. everyone pretty much summed it up

thanks for the copyright 101 class!

and man, i nearly forgot that ideas aren't included ... i should be more careful. a lot of stupid things come out of my mouth, but every once in a while, i spit out gold

nevermind that. thanks again!

Yep! Like mostly everyone said, once it's online,it's copyrighted.

My friend Jen Seng copyrights all her stuff, naturally.

Same goes with any of my original stuff I put online.

to be honest, copyrights only come into play when profit is involved. otherwise, it's kind of silly to go around getting fueled up about it.

everything leads to profits ;) but anyways, i see it this way: we're all explorers. it's nice to get your name connected to your discovery, and it'd annoy the hell out of you if someone went around claiming they were the first

i dunno. best analogy i could come up with. too much Skies of Arcadia @_@

I just usually slap it on the image and let it go. If I happen to stumble upon it one day... THEN I'll kick some mucho ass. But until then.. I just put it on and let it go. That's all. ^_^;

Under copyright law I believed signed by Clinton, enacted for the purpose of smoothing laws reguarding the internet, any work is copyrighted when it is published (not when it is created). Putting something on the 'net which others can download is publishing. So if you make a web site, you have the copyright to it's contents.

published and not created, huh?
good to keep in mind

in other words, don't show anyone you don't trust your good stuff until it's uploaded somewhere
i'm just speculating for the future .. it's why the question came up in the first place

thanks again for the replies. although i think all my curiosities have been satisfied, any more are welcome. this is getting interesting ..

Did you see that movie where Quetin Tarantino did a monologue on how the subtext of Top Gun was that the characters were homosexuals? That idea was originally made by Roger Avery and Quentin used it without his permission. Roger had written the idea into a script already and had to take it out. Him and Quetin don't hate each other but they no longer talk to each other. Avary is afraid that Quetin will steal his intelectual property.

It's not impossible for the original creator of something to win a case against someone who stole it and published it first though.

it'd be annoying, but like i said, it'd seem trivial unless money was involved.

like, i used to have a website on the net, and i had all this silly copyright info up, but my website technically broke copyright laws as well. i had personal writings up, but i used other safeguards, as opposed to some flimsy and unenforceable internet copyright law, to protect them.

technically, even madman's cafe breaks some kind of copyright law. all the photos, screenshots, avatars, animated gifs...you think snk handed out permission to everyone to use this stuff?
