I just tried to imagine- Halo, Metroid Prime, Starfox Adventures, Rare, Bungie everybody on one boat- would that have been better or worse?
I'm very unsympatetic with Microsoft, right to the point where I don't by a product BECAUSE it's Microsoft- but would this have been better?
I don't thing that microsoft, after spending 25b on nintendo (Rare included) could get exclusives like it has now-Bill Gates or not 25b is a very large sum to try to get other deals, like that Tecmo-deal. Also japanese companies like capcom would obviously pull franchises like Biohazzard to PS2.
But then there would still be the matter of GBA which nintendo is sucsessfully using to get companies like Square develop for them again- tough with that sort of money, Nintendo would surely follow it's own goals,
(like secretly planing a new console for 2005.
Still, from the current point of view, it would have been better- currently Sony just cashes on, doing nothing (they can even afford to sell the weakest hardware at the same price as the x-box) except from ensuring games like GTA and Tomb Raider stay exclusive
while Nintendo and Microsoft fight over a much smaller piece of cake.
