Silent Scope - Innovative, challenging, highly realistic, tremendously fun shooter. Not all shooters need to have 5,000 things to remember.

Unison - Forget the silly "ripoff" issues that no one really gives a damn about anyway. After all the ultra-complicated sports games and infinite-danger-every-second military/combat games wouldn't it be nice to cool down with a game where 1) you can practice each level as much as you want before the actual performance, 2) the levels are pretty easy to clear, but tough to get perfect, and 3) the protagonists are beautiful dancers? You'd be surprised.

Klonoa - A "nonviolent" game that's actually fun, and challenging, and deep, and good for the whole family? AND with some of the most breathtaking 3D graphics for any system? It's a crime that this furry critter doesn't get more recognition.

CART Fury - It's amazing how rare it is to have a racing game where you're allowed to race. Where you don't have 50 things to adjust and can just jump in the cockpit and put the pedal to the metal. What's not so amazing is how many people actually seem to like this.

California Speed - Ditto.

Winding Heat & Racing Jam - Ditto again.

Swing Away Golf - Aren't depth, challenge, and lots of stages three of the holy grails of console gaming? So why hasn't this one gotten more attention?

Ready 2 Rumble Boxing - You can have your Tekkens and Soul Caliburs and Bloody Roars. Pounding the living daylights out of your hapless foes, and trying to avoid having the same happen to you...THAT'S fighting.

Pop 'n Music - Children's game? More like all-ages game, which is even better. And c'mon, who doesn't like colorful animations and beautiful music?

Pump It Up - I'm telling you, if you can somehow get past all your prejudices, you'll love this game. (Oh, and start with Normal Mode, like I even need to tell you.)

Didn't this garner enough attention for Konami to put out the sequels?

I totally agree with you on that one. LB was a great game, but somehow it was drowning in the pool of Beat'em Ups that ocurred at the time of it's release.

Another one to I'd add to the list is Tech Romancer.

1.Rez: PS2- this is avantgarde, proof that videogames can be art AND entetaiment.

2.Iso: PS2- I have yet to play it- better, a store in europe has yet to sell it.

3.Pikimin: NGC- all the RTS inovation I expected from Warcraft3.

4.Advanced millitary commander: GBA- a shame this game is not selling- it's the best RBS consoles will ever get.

5. Final Fantasy Tactics: PSX should have gained much more attention- it was the best Psx FF by far.

In fact it is my understanding that several magazines picked FFT as the best RPG of the 98'.... Even if it is a "war game" or a "strategy game".

Dunno about underrated games... Because after all I only play those "obscure games" that most people tend to avoid... To many underrated on that circle.

The entire Ogre Battle Series. If I hear one more kid proclaim "Tactics Ogre sucks!! It's just a rip off of Final Fantasy Tactics with crap graphix!!" one more time I'll kill myself.

The Shin Megami Tensei series (including spin offs like Persona etc.) Seriously I think this game would be a lot more popular over here if people could look past the less than spectacular graphics. Hopefully SMT3 will change that, if Atlus will take a break from porting games no one really cares about that is (yes Cubivour is cool, but I don't see it breaking the charts anytime soon.)

The First Fighting Vipers - Seemed to go unnoticed in NA, as most strayed towards VF. But I loved this game alot more VF at the time.

Tech Romancer - Fun little 3-D robot fight game full of great attitude. Too bad it got ignored...-.-

Y's Book 1 and 2 - Sadly not well known in NA because it was for the Duo. Which is a shame cause it truly is a great game with a great soundtrack..

Eternal Darkness never got the sales it deserved.

Not too many people bought Freedom Force. It was just released a few months ago, and it's already in the bargain bin! That game is terrific!

I'd say E.V.O. - The Search for Eden.

My brother and I rented this game completely randomly and it's one of my favorite SNES games. Check it out if you can, this game should really get a sequel on a modern platform.

I'm also a big Silent Bomber (PS) advocate. Quite a cool game. I'll also second Dino Crisis 2 and the Ogre Battle series.

I could add any number of games to this list but I'll stop now.

I third Rival Schools, but Capcom's giving Akira and Batsu props in CFAS so it's all good.

Pulling a title out of the obscurity hat, I'll go with Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom. Nice little RPG on NES.

I will be the devil's advocate and say that I disagree by that claim. I find Treasure's games to be HIGHLY overrated. Of course this is all a debate on personal taste, of which there is no right or wrong answer.

I have purchased almost every Treasure title since the Megadrive days and feel more and more ripped off with each sucessive title. I think they come up with semi creative ideas, but I don't know...they just always seem to have something missing to me to make me want to play it more. The last title I really enjoyed from them would probably have to be Bangaio, but even that game held me interest for a week or so at the most. Gunstar Heroes, YYH, and in some ways Alien Soldier will always remain their crowning moments IMHO. Alien Soldier in some ways represented the decline of them actually..once again I have to say this is a matter of opinion of course.

To me, many are taking the wrong definition of 'underrated'. We're talking mostly about lesser known games, or games which were not as popular as they should have been. Underrated means that those who did play the games, gave them worse reviews than they deserved. With that, my list:

Asuka 120% LTD for Saturn
Angel Eyes for PSX
Burning Rangers for saturn
Super Burnout for Jaguar
Her Knights for GP32
X2 for PSX
Berzerk for DC
Stretch Panic for PS2

in that case, i'll choose ZOE
at first, the critics praised the game. then when the final version came out, they bashed it so much because it didn't live up to the hype that those very critics created. granted, they're somewhat right; the game could've been so much more. but what game couldn't? i didn't find ZOE disappointing at all. i haven't played the game in a while, but i remember that even the English voice acting was decent

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
sure, that kid was annoying as hell, but that's how they intended him to be. another Shinji; a young child with a huge responsibility. i can't wait to play the sequel. Leo's (i think his name was) personality seemed to change a lot. he seems "hardened" now, like a veteran soldier (in a young man's body, of course) seeking justice

End of Spoiler

These are three random games that I personally feel are overlooked...if you've played any of these (Particularly the first and last ones,) please tell me. :) Thanks!

Cool Cool Toon-

I know like two people who have actually heard of this game. Featuring Jet Grind Radio style graphics, a nice soundtrack, and fun gameplay, this Dreamcast game was overlooked, yet great.

Final Fantasy Legend 3-

I'm not sure if this is overlooked, but I don't know a lot of people who have played this, either...I really enjoyed playing it. (Legend 3, the GAMEBOY game.)

The Journeyman Project-

Why this came to my mind, I don't know. =P

i love the environment there. a lot of the stuff really stuck with me through the years (like that dome air home that you started out in. what a beautiful place)
but i think i was too young for the game. i didn't get very far and i got stuck easily (last thing i remember was a huge facility and an odd robot. i think i was given some kind of weapon and a funny scientist dude was taunting me)
anyways, hm, anyone who played it, what's your take on the game? was it any good?

Well in that case I definitely have to say Industrial Spy: Operation Espionage. Though not perfect, it was a decent strategy title. Strategy, not action. Action would have helped but it was meant to be sorta slow paced. I begs for a remake. So does Burning Rangers. So many unanswered questions in that game yet it would be better as an upgraded rerelease than a full sequel (unless the full sequel was a seperate disc that came along with it).

Here's one people might have forgoten, but if you've played it, you must recall how good it was. LAND STALKERS for Mega Drive. This game took the ARPG genre to a whole new level yet people can only remember how good Zelda is.

Nights, Panzer Dragoon series, Fighter's Mega Mix.(am I the only hardcore Saturn fan here??)
And I also second the first FV.

Jet Set Radio, this game is in a class all by itself. And the sound track, baby.

And oh yeah, ICO for PS2.

As for arcades, Red Earth from Capcom. This was a great game, combining RPG elements into fighting games. Was there ever a port to any home systems??

SNES YuYuHakashou (sp?). Wicked idea for a fighting/strateg game.

But overall, most Sega games are underrated. Being a DC fan is like being a Mac user, kinda sad really...

Definitely not the only hardcore saturn fan here, but if you are one, you should know that those games are in fact VERY HIGHLY rated by all who own them. Except for maybe Red Earth.

And I think DC users get the same respect as everyone else...I mean it *still* gets the KOF games first. And its installed user base is still respectable. just my two cents.

Anyone who says Panzer Dragoon Saga was underrated is wrong. That game is perhaps the most lauded title on the Saturn...no-one could deny it.

Freeter - Yes, it's up to #3 now (and I'm thankful for it)...but try catching an article or review or any bit of recognition anywhere. Besides my own review on GameFAQs, of course. For crying out loud, Dance Dance Revolution Konamix got more publicity than the entire Silent Scope line put together.

I blame the PS2's aura of hype. There's no way an easy-to-learn shooter with one weapon is going to register.

Iggy - I don't care...I enjoy this game tremendously, and I don't see any need to let ingrained prejudices taint my point of view.

Actually, I think a lot of games are hurt by these dumb prejudices. The way I see it, games are for players, so if you like it, knock yourself out.

I can't think of any games that say- I felt uncomfortable with the attention level they recieved and thought they should have been given more attention by fans. but...

I don't think anyone mentioned this yet. It's a game I think everyone should play. In the US, it is called Earthbound. It's on the SNES. I'm desperate for a sequel and wish the first one on the NES had got a US release. I don't know too many people who've played it.
