I got my KOF 2002 Soundtrack from CDJapan today (along with the Strider 1&2 OST and the Real Bout Special AST, hooray). Anyway, here's what I think about it:
It's not sucky like the KOF 2001 soundtrack! It's about half-and-half original and older music, and the original stuff is pretty nice indeed! It's not repetetive techno like in 2001. I particularly like TACOS DANCE, the Mexican Stage music.
I assume there's a KOF 97 approach to the music, as certain characters seem not to have themes listed, notably the NESTS team. I guess if a character isn't associated with a character theme, the stage music plays instead. I haven't played KOF 2002, (I live in Mississippi ;_;) so I don't know if that's the case. The stage themes are full songs unlike KOF 97, and as stated before, sound pretty good.
The 97 Team (Billy, Mary, Yamazaki) seems to have a new theme. It's certainly not any music I recall any of those characters having, but it seems to best fit Yamazaki. I don't think it's The Black Rose, Yamazaki's theme from Wild Ambition. I shoulf listen to it again...
Kusanagi's theme is actually ESAKA?(96), not ESAKA(94).
All the returning music is totally redone, even Kurikinton. I can't necessarily say it sounds better or worse, just different. Makes you realize you've only heard that one version of Bloody since '97. There's nice use of bass in many of them, but I don't think they're using all the audio channels available. Maybe to save memory space?
It's great fun to hear Rythmic Hallucination segue into Fanatic Waltz. (Orochi Shermie's theme)
All in all, it is a definite improvement over last year, but I still miss SNK New World Orchestra. It's a decent soundtrack, though, really.
