"Fighting game ideas." , posted Sat 23 Nov 20:20:post reply

I read NARUTO's post on his fighting game idea so I figured I'd talk about this one I've been working on ideas for.

Story: Four of the game's characters work for a large bounty hunting organization, Malacoda. Their mission is to hunt down any and all people who have defected from Malacoda. The other characters all have their own agendas as well, and are using their former employer's resources, thus why they're being chased after.

Setting: Various bizarre locales. The world of the game would be closest to something like Groove on Fight/Power Instinct. Somewhat normal but not quite.

Gameplay: Characters are associated in teams of two. You can choose to play both with less life or one with more life while using the other character as backup for certain attacks. The game itself has a control scheme like Guilty Gear's for now. Unless I find something more suitable, that is.

Stages: Current ones in consideration:
-Riding in a bullet train.
-Hair salon.
-Church entrance and graveyard.
-Concert hall (starts out with full orchestra playing, by the second round only a few violinists are left. The song changes accordingly.)
-Giant chess board in a colisseum with an audience watching.
-Meat locker with various victims of some psycho in it.

Characters:Here's where I suppose it'll get more interesting. A lot of characters are named after demons in Dante's Inferno. I'll do the ones I've given attacks first. Attacks with a "~" indicate a follow up. The more there are, the further along the followup is.

Barbariccia- Purple hair, tan full-body coat. Russian-style round, tall tan hat. Her weapon is a coffin. She's an exorcist of sorts. She's generally a calm, collected person in battle, but once she's done fighting she acts completely different, shown in some winposes. Her partner is Cagnazzo. She's one of four working for Malacoda.

Attacks-
-Heavy Metal: She sends her coffin spinning either vertically or at a 45 degree angle.
-Bury Me Here: Flies at the opponent sitting on her coffin. Can be done on the ground or in the air.
-Expel Spirit: Her coffin opens and releases one of four kinds of undead creature. Two types of creature, or two of the same, can be fired at once.
~Akuryo: Sends out an evil spirit that floats slowly forward, gradually building speed.
~Kyonshie: Sends a hopping Chinese ghost that bounces high to crush the opponent from above.
~Zombie: Crawls forward to bite the opponent's ankles.
~Poltergeist: Tosses random objects from far away.
-Black Tongue: Barbariccia draws a protective star either in front of herself or overhead that slowly dissipates.
-The Mangler: Command Throw. The coffin slides forward and pulls the opponent in. Can set up combos if you attack the coffin while it's hitting your opponent.
-Metallic Graveyard: DM. The coffin slides along the ground a certain distance then starts spinning into the air rapidly, ending with the door opening and hitting the opponent away.
-Dead Queen Night Procession: DM. The coffin bursts open and a mass of demons spill out. It's similar in appearance to one of Oume and Otane's attacks in Groove On Fight.
-Marriage in the Graveyard: Grab DM. I think it works better as an Instant Kill idea. Barbariccia holds out a hand with a magic symbol coming from it. If it connects the opponent has many coffins drop on him or her, forming a pile.

Draghignazzo- A fairly nondescript man, apart from the sour expression on his face. Green hair, a tan, a pink shirt, tan pants. The real fun is when he starts fighting. Draghignazzo is armed with many, many weapons. Where he keeps them isn't known, being that there's no real place to put them. Only his partner, Rubicante, really knows how he does it. He mostly conducts shady business dealings, using what he's stolen from his former employer. His special attacks may not seem so varied with his weaponry, but his normals use a different weapon for each type of attack.

Attacks-
-Blood-Drawing Sword: A long distance slash with a sword that can also be done in air. Comes in quick and powerful versions.
-Knife the Berserk: Runs in slashing wildly with a machete. Two versions: one ground-based, the other with a leap to it.
-Murder Step: Flips and comes down, slashing with shoe blades.
-Satan's Hand: Stabs at opponent with a small knife.
~Asmodeus: Pulls the knife upward.
~~Astaroth: Lunge with a shovel.
~~~Belphegor: Slash with a scythe.
~Mammon: Kicks a bomb at the opponent's face.
-Like Bruce Lee: Nunchaku flurry attack. Has autoguard. Changes if you're attacked during it.
-Ace of Spades: DM. A flurry of kicked and thrown weapons.
-The Third Revolution: DM. Must be done during the Satan's Hand Chain. Draghignazzo knocks opponent into the air with a log, then jumps into the air and smashes him or her again brutally.
-For a Violent World: DM. Must be done during Like Bruce Lee. He varies the attack's pattern and turns it into a crazy martial arts attack, with no shortage of Bruce Lee cries. Involves nunchaku, shuriken, and many other weapons.
-Will Be Won In Blood: More of an Instant Kill idea than anything. Draghignazzo brings out a guillotine and it either stops just short of cutting the opponent, scaring the crap out of them, or actually cuts them.
Mahiru- A woman all dressed in green. Very spindly and pale. Her eyes always have the same blank look to them. She and Barbariccia seem to have some unresolved issues. She has clawlike hands but her main weapons are giant chess pieces. She's a boss.
Attacks-
-Pawn Spiral: Mahiru causes a pawn piece to either spiral from her toward the enemy or away from the opponent toward her.
-Queen Drop: Mahiru causes a queen piece to drop in various locations on top of the opponent.
-King Line: Mahiru can repeat this attack up to three times. It causes a king piece to stab out in front of her.
-Knight Display: Three knight pieces rise from the ground, each one going higher than the last.
-Rook Change: Counterattack. Mahiru poses and if hit causes a rook piece to take her place as she appears on the other side of the opponent.
-Bishop Arrow: Aerial projectile. Mahiru waves her hand out as a bishop piece aims downward toward the opponent. Can be repeated up to three times before landing. Does not have very long range.
-CHECKMATE!: DM. Sends out 4 chess pieces. They bounce if blocked and can come back to hit again. They can, however, be hit away, to make up for this. A certain amount of damage to them is required, though, to make them dissipate.
-STALEMATE!: DM. Causes a tower of pointy chess pieces to impale the opponent.
-Russian Genius: DM. A flurry of chess pieces is fired in three directions at the opponent. CPU Mahiru can change the positions, but I'm not so sure if her playable version should be able to.
The move descriptions took forever to type, so I'll do more characters later if people are interested. I have character art on my site, but it's currently down. When it's back up I'll have more art as well. So look out for it.
Anyway, tell me what you think so far.
Thanks for the compliments so far. I uploaded an avatar of Barbariccia for me to use. So that's what she looks like.
Anyway, more characters.
Libicocco: A revolver-packing teenage girl. She and her partner, Ciriatto, are both just a little too destructive when on missions. She has a tendency to fly off the handle in battle. Otherwise she's fairly normal. She dresses like she's stuck in the 60s, with big hair and hipster clothing. Another of the four characters working for Malacoda.
Attacks-
-Crazy Firing: She fires high/low shots with decent range. Can be done up to four times and mixed up.
-Explosive Arch: Fires a shot with a shallow/deep arc to it.
-Reckless Whip: She whips her pistol hard at the opponent. Nullifies projectiles.
-Tactical Movement: Libicocco slides toward the opponent with a kick.
~Lie-Down Shooting Mod: She rolls and shoots at the opponent's legs while lying down.
~Backward Arch Mod: She stands and does a backward kick with one leg.
~Liberated Flip Mod: She flips straight upward with a kick.
I need to work on her specials. She needs more. Gun characters are hard to come up with stuff for. Maybe an attack where she loads the gun with different bullets? Suggestions?
-Revolver Madwoman: DM. Libicocco rushes the enemy down, firing many shots of different heights if she connects.
-1969 Cosmic Spiral: DM. Must be done in midair. Libicocco does a diving kick. If it connects, the opponent bounces, then she ducks under him or her and fires multiple shots that send him or her spinning.
-Bang Bang Game: Instant Kill. Libicocco tosses a target. If it hits, the opponent is smashed onto a giant target. She jumps to a certain spot and tries to hit him or her with various trick shots, misses all of them, gets mad, and blows everything up with a big gun.
Cagnazzo: A tall, muscular character. Wears yellow overalls and a yellow beret-type hat. Paper seals are his weapon. He talks very politely in battle and seems very friendly. He works with Barbariccia as an exorcist. Another of four characters working for Malacoda.
Attacks-
-Purple Snake: Tosses out a purple seal that poisons the opponent.
-Yellow Jewel: Tosses out a yellow seal that stuns the opponent.
-Green Mirror: Holds out a green seal that reflects projectiles.
-Blue Sword: Tosses out a swordlike projectile with short range.
-Explosion Ward: Cagnazzo pauses and sets of an explosion of seals centered on himself.
-Monsoon Ward: A tornado of wards forms right near or traveling away from Cagnazzo.
-Stairway to Heaven: Cagnazzo fires a line of seals that can have their direction changed.
-Flipping Moon: Cagnazzo performs a double backwards flip kick.
-Curse of Folly: Cagnazzo adds a seal to the enemy that strengthens certain attacks.
-End of Folly: DM. Cagnazzo assualts his opponent with seals, covering his or her body with them. He then sets them all off, causing an explosion. Any seals that have been added by Curse of Folly will strengthen this attack but they will be lost when it is performed.
-Banishing Circle: Air only. Three circles of wards spread out like a shockwave.
-Sent to Another World: Instant Kill. The background turns murky and the music becomes distorted. Cagnazzo places a blood-red ward on the the opponent's forehead, mutters some words with strange gestures, the opponent bleeds, and is slowly pulled into the ground.
Calcabrina: A waifish young woman. Arrogant and cruel. Very athletic and flexible. Utilizes a wand tipped with a female symbol as her weapon, called Woman Species. She has brown hair and her outfit is hard to describe. It's cut open in a diamond shape at the chest but she's not big-breasted, so it doesn't look entirely skanky.
Attacks-
-Rainbow Haze: An explosion issues from her weapon in many colors. Very little range.
-To the Future Me: Calcabrina attempts a long-ranged thrust.
-Vanity Wave: Calcabrina produces a wave of energy with good vertical range or one that travels.
-Narcissism Arc: Calcabrina performs an overhead flip kick.
-Hall of Mirrors: Calcabrina sends out an illusion of herself to attack. It can be delayed for more range.
-Pride Comet: Calcabrina performs a diving kick at an angle or straight down.
-Monument to Self: Calcabrina kicks off her wand surrounded by energy.
-1,000 Legs of Violent Women: DM. An up-close rushing volley of kicks.
-Army of Me: DM. Multiple illusionary selves rush the opponent, ending with Calcabrina herself.
-Trap of Pride: Instant Kill. A giant female symbol slides in, strikes the opponent, melts, then causes him/her to disintegrate.
More to come soon. I haven't come up with attacks for most of the rest. Tell me if you think anyone sounds over/underpowered. And suggest attacks, if you'd like.
I really like your ideas, actually. It gives a lot of variety. Would the spirits your bosses use be accessible by the normal characters, or no? Would some spirits be really incompatible with some characters, putting them at a disadvantage? I think that might be cool.
One of the bosses is Mahiru, the chess-piece wielding lady I described in the first post there. But I agree that I need more bosses. I also need to come up with interesting attacks for most of the remaining characters. I suppose I could give some descriptions if anyone wants to suggest things.
Ciriatto- A girl wearing a cat hood. Works with Libicocco. The final character working for Malacoda. She uses piano wire as a weapon, and I'm considering making her a throw-type character. Her personality is completely flirty and girly. She whispers things to her opponent as she strangles him or her.
Farfarello- A waifish young male. Complements his partner, Calcabrina, in appearance. Uses a very curved sword as a weapon. Quite stupid and talks often like your average bishounen would, about the power of love and such. No clue on what kind of abilities he'd have.
Alichino- A masked individual who likes to wear plaid. He's very creepy to everyone else. His weapon is a boomerang and he also steals opponents' energy often because he runs out of power quickly. I think he should be powerful, but he needs to do a certain attack every so often to stay powerful. Thus his agenda would be to either get rid of his need to recharge every so often to live a normal life or to gain a constant source of strength so he'd be unstoppable. His partner is Graffiacane.
Graffiacane- Originally a huge grappler-type but now I'm considering changing him a bit. No clue yet on a story. Partnered with Alichino.
Rubicante- Somewhat nondescript looking. A young man wearing glasses and geeky clothes. His weapon is a chainsaw. I think his story should either be that he is possessed by a demon. This would have the two exorcist characters after him. He partners with Draghignazzo because he thinks that if the thing possessing him gets out of control, his partner would be able to stop him.
Vlad- A skilled violinist. He's been down on his luck since leaving Malacoda and performs wherever he's welcome. His attacks involve using the violin strings and the bow of the violin. He works with Deu Ill.
Deu Ill- Strange young man using maracas as a weapon. He has horns growing from his head. I started to come up with attacks for him, but it's been difficult. He works with Vlad mostly because the two have musical ability. He doesn't want to think about his past anymore and plays music on the streets or wherever he's allowed. In battle he barely pays attention to his opponent. He moves to the beat in his head.
Auf Der Mar- He's an older character than most of the rest. He dresses in a long jacket and holds a megaphone. Most of his attacks for now involve shouting into the megaphone and having it physically produce the word he shouts. I'll have to come up with more. He has no partner, so he might make a nice boss as well. He was one of Malacoda's best men, but now he lives in a secluded village far north. He defends the villages to repay his earlier sins.
K-Ri-Komu- A deranged haircutter. Most of her attacks involve scissors in some aspect. She's just utterly insane in battle. Occasionally she has moments outside of battle in which she'll be completely coherent, but usually she's crazy. Her weapons, of course, are scissors of various sizes. I'm not so sure if she needs a partner. She might be a single-entry type.
Raven- The androgynous character. Raven is armed with a raven melded to one hand that performs various attacks. It's also powerful enough to pull its user up into the air when necessary. Raven was brought up by Malacoda from a young age and never taught anything other than to kill. Hence, Raven has a cold, emotionless voice. I'm not sure if the character's gender will ever be revealed or if it'll be something very strange. Raven probably won't get a partner either.
Now that I've listed most of the characters and the possible bosses, if anyone wants to come up with attack/storyline/additional character suggestions, they're more than welcome. If I come up with more I'll post it.
Thanks. I really would like to work on something maybe MUGEN-based with this. But I'm crap at making sprites, at least for now. And I'd have to learn how to program characters and such. Not to mention making the backgrounds.
And thanks for the welcome, Tashoku.
Anyway, I have a few more ideas here and there. First, backgrounds. I came up with a few more.
-The outskirts of a village with snow periodically falling during battle. This stage may not even get a song, or maybe just something very ambient.
-A grand hall, similar to Charlotte's stages in the first two Samurai Spirits games, with a bizarre abstract painting that shifts throughout the round.
-Standing on top of cars stuck in traffic on a bridge. This one might be hard to do.
-Outdoors in a park, standing in a stone courtyard with various statues (think Annie's stage in Power Instinct. Speaking of which, is there any way I can get the music from that stage?).
-A wooded area that at first starts out with many will-o-wisps flitting about. By the second round ravens start flying by in the background, at first a few then gradually more and more until you can barely see some parts of the stage.
As for characters, I'm going to see which will be the easiest to come up with attacks for next. Of the ones I've done, Libicocco could still use a few more attacks. I'm definitely open for suggestions.
And I'm going to flesh out the story a bit as well, of course. I'll probably post later on today. Leave suggestions or questions if you'd like.
Hmmm, how about...
Libicocco's Reckless Whip could instead look like the Western spin-the-pistol move...
Russian Roulette - can be done thrice. Libicocco flips the barrel open and spins the bullet casing, then snaps it back. On the third time she does this, she grins. The first has no effect, but the second and third will add up to two additional Crazy Firing.
A command throw - Libicocco aims her pistol at her enemy's head and fires, but nothing comes out. After severl 'clicks', she gets frustrated, holds her gun in the barrel and hammers her enemy in the head.
Those sound really nice, actually! I like. And the pistol-spinning does work better. Let's find an appropriate name for the throw. Hmm. Panic Reaction. I think that describes it pretty well.
Anyone who can get me Annie's stage song from the first game gets a drawing. Or cookies. Anyway, I have another character ready.
Alichino: Yes, the creepy masked character with a boomerang. During battles he has an additional bar that indicates how much attack power he has left. As it runs out his attacks become weaker.
-O.WA: Throws boomerang in an overhead curving arch.
-O.STW: Slams his boomerang down hard, causing a pillar of light to erupt.
-V.WIND: Throws his boomerang out straight. Can be held out as defense, but doing so leaves him immobile and slowly drains his attack meter.
-M.HAND: Alichino shifts back and then lunges out with a fist. Knocks the opponent upward.
-L.KICK: Alichino rears back and launches a drop kick. Can be done in air with a slight variation to it.
-O.JDSH: Alichino rushes forward quickly. Can be interrupted. Hard to hit him out of it.
-k.i.l.l.: Must be done up close. Alichino grabs the opponent and drains his or her energy.
-O.MVR: Alichino stands still and charges his attack meter back up. Takes longer than you'd think and has bad starting and ending delays.
-EO.MVR+: Alichino sacrifices some of his DM meter to refill his attack meter. I may change this so that it's his life that's sacrificed.
-EO.BR: DM. Must be close to perform. Alichino lunges out with a punch. If it connects he does a series of strikes to the opponent finishing with a pillar of energy. This drains a good chunk off his attack meter when it's used.
-EO.B-PLAGUE: DM. Alichino throws many boomerangs out. Has 3 variations: Straight, Anti-Air, Aerial.
-s.l.a.y.- Instant kill. Alichino grabs the opponent like in k.i.l.l. but this time keeps draining until all that's left is a dried-out body.
Anyone curious to know what the attacks stand for?
O.WA = Operation:Wild Arch
O.STW = Operation:Shake the World
V.WIND = Vicious Wind
M.HAND = Metal Hand
L.KICK = Launch Kick
O.JDSH = Operation:Jet Dash
O.MVR = Operation:Midnight Violence Room
EO:MVR+ = Emergency Operation: Midnight Violence Room Plus
EO:BR = Emergency Operation:Brutal Rave
EO:B-PLAGUE = Emergency Operation:Boomerang Plague
I think he turned out pretty well. He wouldn't be everyone's kind of character due to the need to recharge all the time, but I think he'd be pretty cool to use.
Let's do another one!
Rubicante: A young man possessed by some variety of demon. His weapon is a chainsaw and he has many strange attacks. His fighting stance has him slightly hunched over with energy radiating off of him. He never was a part of Malacoda, but Barbariccia and Cagnazzo are out to exorcize him and he's associating with a former member, thus he's on the run.
-Scarlet Choir: Rubicante leans forward and coughs up a gout of blood.
-Torture Flare: Rubicante stands still and a pillar of blood surrounds him.
~Painful Rebirth: Rubicante jumps out of Torture Flare with a rising slash.
~Under an Ebony Moon: Rubicante does a circular slash with long range.
-Black Cradle: Rubicante tumbles on the ground or from the air, chainsaw out. Hits multiple times, ending with a crouching slash.
-Accuser's Wing: Air only. Rubicante is surrounded by many bloody jets that produce multiple hits.
-The Seas Ran Red: A lunge forward with chainsaw out.
~Blood On My Hands: Interrupts The Seas Ran Red. A spinning low slash.
~Gore Frenzy: Rubicante interrupts The Seas Ran Red, pauses, and does a tackle that breaks the opponent's guard.
-Marionette Heart: Sends out a pulsating heart in front of or behind the opponent. Explodes if it makes contact, but can be hit away.
-Number of the Beast: DM. Those three familiar numbers appear on Rubicante's forehead and the demon possessing him temporarily frees itself and attacks independently. I admit it's similar to a certain Guilty Gear attack, but bear with me. Depending on the button used the demon will perform a version of one of Rubicante's attacks.
-Bleeding Torment: DM. Rubicante points and a huge wave of blood strikes the opponent.
-Black Hole Chainsaw: Instant Kill. Rubicante hunches over in pain as a meathook drops from the ceiling. He looks up if the meathook connects and laughs maniacally. The background goes black and all you see are slash effects from his weapon. You can hear the chainsaw revving repeatedly. When the lights come back on, the opponent is nowhere to be found and Rubicante is lying on the ground, unconscious.
Perhaps he's a little too violent? Oh well, he's appropriately crazy, regardless. I'll get to more characters soon enough.
Libicocco should have few attacks due to her easy ability to mixup even at a distance. The ammo thing is a good idea but be careful to make it balanced.
Agreed. What she has she can easily switch up. I think with the ammo-reloading, the best way to do it would be that you get bullet icons displayed under your health when you do it to indicate how many extra you have. Also, another way to balance it would be to have her reload automatically after a certain amount of shots.
Heh, that'd be one scary lady.
Well, after thinking the site was down due to continually using the wrong link, I'm back. I will have more characters soon. If track doesn't kill me.
I'm still alive! Damn shin splints. Anyway, new character movelist! YES!
Ciriatto- A cat-hooded girl who uses many throw attacks. One of the smallest characters as well. Her weapon is piano wire.
Attacks-
-Black Diamond Slam- Command throw. Ciriatto grabs the opponent's head with her legs and flips him/her to the floor.
-Ixtab Lash- Ciriatto strikes out with her wire, causing it to stick into the opponent if it connects.
~Careless Toss- Follows Ixtab Lash. Ciriatto throws her opponent behind her either low and short or high and far. This can set up juggles.
~Weight of the World- Also can follow Ixtab Lash. Ciriatto flips forward to stomp the opponent underneath.
~Welcome to my Nightmare- Another Ixtab Line follow-up. Ciriatto pulls her opponent close to her.
~~Sweet Dreams- Follows up Pull In. Ciriatto delivers a two-hand upward smash.
-3-Star Step- Command throw. Similar to Chris' punch throw in KOF, Ciriatto walks up her opponent and flips off.
-Ixtab Coil- Counter. If hit, Ciriatto will stop her opponent's attack by wrapping him/her in wire.
-Violence Drop Kick- A rushing drop kick. Good range, can be done in air.
-Atashi no Lariat Special- Running lariat punch. Can be done once more by hitting Punch again.
-Ixtab Choker- Command throw. If it connects, you spin to the opponent's back and strangle him/her with the wire.
-Look What the Cat Dragged In- DM. Ciriatto pauses and lays down her wire on the ground. If the opponent steps on it, he/she gets trapped in a mass of wires tangled together like a spiderweb. Ciriatto has her hand on the other end of the wires and lets go. The opponent gets slashed multiple times.
-Black Velvet- DM. Ciriatto rushes in with various wrestling-style attacks. Can be ended with a moonsault, elbow drop, or drop kick.
-Call Me Queen- Instant Kill. Ciriatto lunges out with her wire. If it connects, the background changes to a wrestling ring and she does a leaping attack then spins to the ground with the opponent and snaps his/her neck.
She might need some different DMs. I dunno. Give suggestions if you've got em.
