Does anyone know of any Indian characters in videogames? NO NATIVE AMERICAN CHARACTERS. That is a completely different subject.

Dhalsim, of course! though, he is anything BUT archetypical or 'standard' (can't think of a certain word and don't wanna stereotype)

Does Apu from the The Simpsons video game count? I guess not.

Anyway, The Gandaras ( both of them, they're VERY different) are two Indian SNK characters; Yuga is also a god from India. I'll put him/her back in my avatar sooner or later; he's one of my favorite god bosses.

I think what he is trying to mean is that we are tired of seeing very similar characters and we need a fresh break sometimes...he doesn't mean to be offensive I believe.

Anyway where does The Gandaras appear in? Which SNK game?

Why don't you tell us exactly what you're talking about Puar. Better yet, don't. Jerk-off.

On topic I think it's pretty obvious why there aren't more non-caucasian/japanese characters in games. It's because most games (that we play at least) are made by white and Japanese people.

The less you know or have come into contact with other cultures the harder it is to depict them. This is especially true of Japan, where there are very few non-Japanese people walking around and even fewer that aren't white or asian.

Here in North America we have less of an excuse. There are still plenty of people who only hang out/date/go to a doctor or dentist that's the same race of them. Many people are still amused by ethnic jokes, and take an "us and them" view of the world. And I'm not just talking about white people here.

I think that fighting games in general do pretty well with ethnic diversity considering, aside from a few misguided stereotypes.

That's kinda harsh. Anyway, you all keep in mind that the games aren't made for us, but for japanese people. And there's no ethnic variety in Japan to start so it makes sense.

Personally I don't care about any character's nationality, as long as the character is interesting.

I agree. I don't think it's a game designer's job to make sure they have a Power Rangers-esque coalition of different races and nationalities. I want my charater to be interesting and fun more than anything else.

Indeed. "Jap" has long since ceased being an acceptable term for Japanese, besides, whether it's some sort of "internet shorthand" or not.

Meanwhile, the funny thing about the Japanese character designing scene is that I rarely think of race in the first place. People have largish Western eyes, yet have Japanese names; sport colors of hair and impossible perms... It seems almost like race has been ignored more than patterned to look like one in particular. That is, until those seeking needed variety in character design started adding race to their designs. I'm all for it, though you've gotta wonder how long it will be before African-American characters start having pink hair like all the others.....!

That's what I'm saying. I'm tired of the American tendency nowadays to start pointing fingers and calling people racist or discriminatory just because the cast isn't like Captain Planet's Planet Patrol or whatever. Like others have said, Japan's pretty much just Japanese people, unlike America, where we pretty much have at least one of every country here. I'm not about to blame them for "not having enough hispanic black jewish norwegian comedians in wheelchairs that like to sing and eat ice cream" or something. Lighten up. I like the characters based on their design and what they're like, not where they're from.

In note-taking, that tends to work well. Mostly, it's just unfortunate that the derrogatory term for Japanese was simply a shortened version of the word, unlike other slurs which tend to be unrelated spelling-wise. Right on with JPN.

I too have practically stopped caring about race when I realized that race for many video game characters these days was nothing more than text in their official profile. The majority of them, it doesn't matter what their race is. It only slightly factors into many characters' appearances and design if that much, and besides, you probably don't want it to factor into a character's appearance and design too much or else it'll get stereotypical. And also, moving along, race rarely has anything to do with a (nonstereotyped) character's storyline, either (possible exception being the 'from all over the world' Dolls, but even then it's more a theme thing than a storyline-important thing)

Oh, don't forget that T. Hawk in the default pallete is caucasian skin-tone :P

i've seen women in korea who i would swear weren't korean, though they were. maybe they were biracial, but koreans aren't big on biracial marriages and all, for the most part.

as for the hair thing, if you walk around with the young crowds in japan and korea and china and hong kong, you see some insanely styled hairdos. not quite benimaru just yet, but yea.

I hear you, man, having been in both China and Japan myself. People have crazy hair wherever you go, I mean more of the stylized Toriyama extent, which will really take more hair than a person might ever hope (not?) to have. The eyes comment--it's only generally speaking, but Western and Eastern eyes are doubtlessly different, and the anime colored eyes thing is really what makes some people think of them as being "Western" eyes I think...not that an "Asian" anime character would have the hated slanty-eyes that stupid characactures used to use (at least I hope not).

Fighting games do tend to go that extra mile for adding race to "blank" character designs, when the typical anime-type face is glossy and not particularly defined towards any race in particular. Anyhow...

Speaking of eyes, the most blattant exception to these big eyes in anime/manga would be Fujii Yagumo, the main character of... 3x3 Eyes.

And as a question for Zam, do you use ICQ or AIM? If so, what is/are your number(s)? I'd rather like to talk to you some time.

AIM is turned off at the moment. Gotta get more organized and my typing speed sucks.

What is yours? I might turn it back on in december. If you don't want to post it, you could email me

Oh, and race can be negligible, but it can also add to a character. It's finding the right mix. Indian woman who hates heat and thus despises working in her home country? Can work without being stereotypical.

Nah, no worries.
ICQ: 136250138

AIM: Bugrom1067

I was hoping to get some fan art of Yuga done, but I think I confused everyone. :(

Where is Yuga from? I might research the character (though I won't be able to draw anything...at least not yet)

BTW, my last post was "777" maybe this means Tara (who I was talking about) will get good luck...

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
Who needs it since she has no bodily usage below her waist and is on opposing sides with the man she loves.

Yuga is the boss of both SS 64 games. He/she is quite possibly unique in the world fighting game bosses in that he/she turns dead babies in to monsters and can attack you no matter where you are in relation to him/her. I have a fair amount of material I can provide, in the form of scans, movie/sound captures, and general knowledge about the character. After all, it's a personal crusade of mine to " promote SS 64 awareness " . ^_^
