Indeed. "Jap" has long since ceased being an acceptable term for Japanese, besides, whether it's some sort of "internet shorthand" or not.
Meanwhile, the funny thing about the Japanese character designing scene is that I rarely think of race in the first place. People have largish Western eyes, yet have Japanese names; sport colors of hair and impossible perms... It seems almost like race has been ignored more than patterned to look like one in particular. That is, until those seeking needed variety in character design started adding race to their designs. I'm all for it, though you've gotta wonder how long it will be before African-American characters start having pink hair like all the others.....!

I too have practically stopped caring about race when I realized that race for many video game characters these days was nothing more than text in their official profile. The majority of them, it doesn't matter what their race is. It only slightly factors into many characters' appearances and design if that much, and besides, you probably don't want it to factor into a character's appearance and design too much or else it'll get stereotypical. And also, moving along, race rarely has anything to do with a (nonstereotyped) character's storyline, either (possible exception being the 'from all over the world' Dolls, but even then it's more a theme thing than a storyline-important thing)
Oh, don't forget that T. Hawk in the default pallete is caucasian skin-tone :P

though i get what you're saying, you do realize that the narrow-eyed thing is an asian stereotype(and stemmed more from chinese than japanese)?
i've seen women in korea who i would swear weren't korean, though they were. maybe they were biracial, but koreans aren't big on biracial marriages and all, for the most part.
as for the hair thing, if you walk around with the young crowds in japan and korea and china and hong kong, you see some insanely styled hairdos. not quite benimaru just yet, but yea.
not trying to reprimand or anything.
I hear you, man, having been in both China and Japan myself. People have crazy hair wherever you go, I mean more of the stylized Toriyama extent, which will really take more hair than a person might ever hope (not?) to have. The eyes comment--it's only generally speaking, but Western and Eastern eyes are doubtlessly different, and the anime colored eyes thing is really what makes some people think of them as being "Western" eyes I think...not that an "Asian" anime character would have the hated slanty-eyes that stupid characactures used to use (at least I hope not).
Fighting games do tend to go that extra mile for adding race to "blank" character designs, when the typical anime-type face is glossy and not particularly defined towards any race in particular. Anyhow...
