"R rating?" , posted Fri 22 Nov 13:48post reply

I have a question about the rating of movies in america...
Is there a precise scale of what makes a movie be rated R (or other?)
I ask that because a really great french movie is "R" in America, and I really don't see what's so schoking in it.... (it's called 8 Women, if you have the opportunity, see it, it's a really well done movie)

Right here, click on a rating for details.

Link Here

Is not really that the movie is shocking or not, its just some of the content that the movie has.

I don't get the ratings system now. Ten years ago it made sense.

I saw the movie Joe Somebody when it came out, because I didn't like anything else that was out. The movie was PG, but they had words like Ass and I believe Shit. I couldn't believe it, they said ass like several times. Tt wasn't like I haven't heard the word before, but I was shocked to hear it in a PG movie.

Weird. Well the PG rating doesnt mention anything about "cursing" words (that could fall under the material that requires parent guidance,) tho these words are becoming common lately on tv. Well not shit. But yeah unless the movie had some of the other stuff listed, then it barely got the pg rating. The ratings make no sense, but doesnt matter tho, that doesnt stop people from going watching the movie.

Watcha doing watching Joe Somebody??? that bored!? shoulda rented a game or something(!!!)

Ah, forgive me I didn't know what I was doing. I thought Tim Allen would be good, but he wasn't. He isn't tricking me into seeing Santa Clause 2. No way, No how. I am off to see Die Another Day in an hour or two.

They sure don't... when I saw Ace Ventura: Pet Detective I was shocked that the movie was PG-13. A few years ago there's no way in hell a movie like that could sneak by with that rating. Man, I was taken aback.

It was actually a somewhat humorous movie, but the sequel was so wretchedly awful it's degrading to watch. It was on HBO so I could just change the channel, had it been in a movie theatre I might have walked out.

I am going to see 007 myself. Im not expecting much, just an action flick with that one Jinx girl. AARRRRR matey.

The only movie I have walked out of was Get Carter. Fat Stallone never took it to "the next level." Soundtrack was good tho.

Of course they make no sense.

-Titanic had boobies and it was rated PG-13.

-Mulan had a cross-dressing heroine and a scene with a whole bunch of naked guys taking a bath in a lake, and it was rated G.

Take that as you will.

It's really subjective. Movie studios generally want the rating to be as low as possible, without alienating their target audience, picking up the maximum amount of viewers. Hence movies like James Bond with lots of murder and sex will always get a PG 13 rating since an R would prohibit all those teenagers from attending. Same with Disney. Parents would be less likely to take kids to see Disney movies if they were rated higher.

I'd be ready to bet that if the later James Bonds or Titanic were released by a small time movie producer, they would get an R rating. The MPAA looks out for it's own.

Amen. Independent Cinema always gets the shaft. If they were to release a movie they will have to cut out obscene amounts of trash... but, a Disney movie like Scary Movie part 1 can have sex scenes with cum geysers, and use of illegal drugs. Not to mention a penis going through a mans head.

It's the same as everything else. There are groups that have power and then there are those that are pissed on for being below them. Conglomerates make me sick... but oh well, I gotta eat.

Hmm.. I was so disappointed with " The World is Not Enough " that I'm not sure I want to see the new one. What they REALLY need to do is bring Ernst Stavro Blowfeld back.

Don't forget that Mulan also managed to kill hundreds of people with explosives and landslides yet she still stars in a G rated movie.

Didn't one of the last movies that featured Blofeld have him running around in a dress? Cobra Commander had more of an heir of respect and power about him than Spectre did there toward the end.

Disney actually has been letting it's ratings slide a bit to my knowledge Atlantis, the Hunchback of Noctre Dome, and Treasure Planet were all PG.

Disney's cheif animation rival Dreamworks seems to like the PG (claiming it gets parents to discuss the films with their kids rather then just leave them their for a few hours)

Forget that! Last week in animation class we watched Mulan... The way she kills the Hun Leader is just pornographically burtal!

Spoiler in case someone hasn't seen the movie:

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
After disarming the Hun and getting him to the far side of the roof, Mulan is jointed by Mushu and Cricky. Mushu lights the giant fire cracker on his back causing it to plow towards the Hun, smacking him off the roof...

already pretty savage, but the fire cracker drives him straight into a tower containing MORE fireworks, a giant stylized explotion occurs, no doubt off screen it's slowly/painfully melting the flesh off the Hun Leader as he screams for God to just end his misery.

End of Spoiler

Kids nowadays get used to all those violence already. Wild E. Coyote got hurt in more painful and brutal manners than that.

Ha ha ha, I don't recall that; I remember him having plastic surgery copies made of him... he was thrown down a smokestack in his last film, and he wasn't even called " Blowfeld " that time, because of some kind of licensing issues.. apparently the person who wrote the screenplay to " Thunderball " kept the rights to SPECTRE, and he wanted to make 007 movies with Warner Bros. instead, so U.A. killed off SPECTRE... and that's why SPECTRE is still around in " Never Say Never Again " ...

But since Warner now owns MGM/UA, They can easily bring Spectre back if they want too...

As for ratings, Always remember the MPAA is more forgiving to violence and cussing than sex. For some reason any frank and realstic treatment of the subject will get an R, while killing of hundreds of the enemy will get a PG or PG-13...

Wait until some American producer achieves a remake of "8 Women" and chances are the R rating will have disappeared. Why make all these remakes of foreign films is totally beyond me. All films lose their flavour when the Hollywood treatment has subdued them.
