Yesterday I went to the game store to pick some stuff I pre-ordered (MK:DA, Metroid Prime and Fusion)
I haven't played Prime yet (it's a birthday gift from my mom techincally, so I'm not allowed to play it until today), Fusion as you already know is awesome so I won't talk about it here...
Then there's MK:DA
and yes I know half of you are going to reply "Mortal Kombat sucks!" well that was MK1 through 4 (and in all fairness back when they first came out MK 1 and 2 were okay, they aged poorly) the new MK has made major changes...
Graphics: 6 out of 10 The animation for the game looks very poor... look at Law in Tekken and Maxi in Soul Calibur, then play as Johnny Cage in either his Jeet Kun Do or Nunchucku styles, noticable drop. However most other styles it isn't that easy to tell.
Graphics look like they were made for the PS2 and just ported over to the XBox (I got the XBox version thinking it might look a little nicer, NOPE! Midway programed for the lowest common denominator -__-) and strangely the characters have a very "American" art style to them (which I like, as most Japanese fighters have a very "Anime" art to them it makes sense an American one would use "American" art, when it could have taken the Gekido route and pretened to be 'anime')
Gameplay: 8 out of 10 My favorite combo in MK1-4 was this: as Sub-Zero: Freeze opponent, walk up, hit HP until they fall over (or round ends)
I tried this in DA, Sub-Zero's HP is a knock down move (in both Dragon and Shotokan styles... which amazing is NOT Ryu style! So at least Midway knows something Capcom USA doesn't) there by my old combo is worthless and the departure from the Old MK was clear.
The game is much like Tekken, were each character has preset combos (that in theory can be changed together.) Switchin styles is a really great feature for characters like Shang Tsung, who are effective in both their styles, while in others it's really just sort of an annoance. (for example Scorpion is extremely effect in Hapkido mode, but his other style is nothing but knockdown moves)
Weapons are still largely an after thought it seems, though not as much as in 4. Weapons have the unique balance were since they do more damage you'll take more as well. I get a feeling the MK team only wanted to give a few characters weapons, as Shang Tsung and Scorpion fight rather well them, while the only real use for Sub-Zero's "Kori Blade" is to impale someone (which causes the other fighter to take consistant damage during the fight at the lost of your third style.)
The game uses 6 buttons. HP,HK,LP,and LK are replaced by Attacks 1 through 4 (I guess they're unlabled since some styles like TDK use no punches) the "run" button is gone in favore of the real styles, Block is unchnaged.
Added is a new "Speical" button that changes depending on the style... so far I've seen it been used as an impale move, a taunt (Johnny poorly mimics Bruce Lee's hand wave, and Scorpion leans over and says "Come Here!"), a "power up" (you grow bigger and something happens I guess), and a quick dodge. Sounds confusing but since each character only has 3 styles you learn pretty fast what it does in each one.
Finally, though classic Speical moves like the Freeze ball and Scorpion Spear are in the game you probably won't find yourself using them much. In fact the CP rarely uses them either. Fatalities also aren't very good.
Replay value:10 out of 10 As you play through the game you earn "Koins" either by completeing missions, fighting in arcade mode, or beating the mini-games.
Konquest (read: advanced training mode) each character has 10 missions to complete (after finishing 8 basic training sessions like "walk... now dash") these range from easy (I breezed through all 10 of Shang's) to unforgiving (Bo Rai Chu's 9th Mission is impossible! you must complete the combo YYXX-switch-Y Back+B... the command haunts my dream! I'll never get it right!!!)
Mini-Games include MK1's "Test Your Might" (except now the characters are smart enough to use their arms instead of faces to smash stuff.) and the rather fun "Test Your Sight" (a shell game)
Arcade Mode is rather fun, but be expecting a very cheap fight againist the Oni Moloch. (hint: use a short standing combo on him and when he blocks, sweep kick for a rather easy win.)
Overall: It's my personal view this game is better Tekken, it's *almost* as good as DoA, but it's sure as Hell no Virtua Fighter, and until Capcom All-Stars proves other wise MK has made the jump into full 3D far better then it's old 'rival' Street Fighter.
It's a good game to rent if you're not looking to unlock everything (and about your spoiler Juan, He's not playable at all.) But if you're looking to get everything it's a must buy.
YYXX-switch-YBack+B ARRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!! I will get this to work somehow!!!!

Kung Lao no longer has his "Superman" move, but I haven't unlocked Raiden yet to know if he does.
and since you can see them darkened in on the select screen/fight them in Konquest modes I don't consider this a spoiler but returning characters who are hidden are: Raiden, Kitana, Reptile, and Jax.
Raiden is cool, he still shoots lightning, but his 'superman' is replaced with an electrified soldier ram! He does have his electrified grabs though, that end with a cool palm thrust or a kick.
I like him, he even has a variation of a samurai outfit for his alternate costume. He is one of the better characters to finish the game with I think.
If you haven't found him in the crypt, I believe it's XG.

quote: better than tekken? LMFAO!
wow....
i mean, just...wow
it's a HUGE step up from any other mk game, yeah...thats true. but it isnt anywhere as polished or as deep as any tekken/doa/vf. period. if they do a sequel and keep working on it, then it might have a chance. but there's to much stuff missing gameplay wise right now for it to even come close to tekken/vf/doa.
is it worth the 50 bucks? you bet your ass. just dont expect it to be the most involving deep fighter ever. play it for fun, it IS mortal kombat after all...
and a badass one at that.

I said IN MY OPINION it's as good as Tekken.
And that was based solely on gameplay, to me Tekken gameplay is very unintuitive and based largely on remember an exact order to hit a button (it's sort of like Simmon in a way I guess.)
Tekken's animation and graphics are more polished, it has nicer CGI, fun mini-games.... but in my view Tekken is extremely lacking when compared to MK:DA in terms of gameplay. (But I've never liked Tekken, well no, I like Tekken Bowling and that's about it... so take my opinion on it as you'd like)
but then again, I also think Fighting Vipers buts Tekken to shame...

Ok i finally decided to get the game, not bad at all, but one thing: DO NOT BUY THE GAMECUBE VERSION. Someone at Midway tought it would be a good idea to cripple the analog stick for gameplay and navigation, leaving you to play with the little cross. Not for human hands. No big deal tho, I exchanged it for the playstation 2 version, it looks the same, load times are a bit slower but its bearable, and it plays much better with the controller.
The cast of characters is good, much better than the pulled out of my butt characters in 4. But there are still some that are very plain or just seem to be made at the last minute. Like Li Mei. And MOLOCHO. What the hell were they thinking with MOLOCHO? By the way there is another spanish pun there with the character Mavado, add an l after the a and you got Malvado. OOOOH he is an evil man.
What i liked the best was the extras, felt like a dvd. And cooking with scorpion justified the purchase.
ITS OK!
