hmmm just a few i can think of off the top of my head ..
blacks - they're almost always portrayed as either A) a boxer, B) a fighter with some sort of "beat" or "break dancing" moves (capoeira, anyone?), or C) a huge monster Final Fantasy VIII's Kiros has got to be my favorite black video game character. he doesn't really follow any of the set stereotypes. besides that, i've always thought he was badass
grapplers - heheheh, guess this is a small attack at Capcom. but anyways, because of them i always thought that grapplers were supposed to be huge and slow (and have 360 movement throws) after playing a few kofs, i never realized how much i love playing with them
Americans - T_T always with some sort of sports motif, big and tall, cocky, over-competitive, you name it, the list goes on and on ... what saddens me is that this stereotype is very much true, and this comes from an American's point of view ..... well, all of those except for the "big and tall." us jerk Americans come in all sizes :D

Oh, while I'm thinking about it, I might explain the Japanese perception of blacks. A good 75% of Japanese people have never even met a black person. Look at it in this respect. The entire idea Japanese have of blacks are based off of movies, television, and music; more often than not, American movies, television, and music. Step back and look at it in that respect, and think about how blacks are traditionally depicted in American media ( especially old Tom and Jerry and Bugs Bunny cartoons; yes, the " offensive " ones aren't banned in Japan; there's nobody to complain about them ) It will make a lot more sense to you.

How about, "good" stereotypes:
African-Americans: Uhm...? Americans (USA): Ken, Alex. Ken is half-Japanese I know. Geese is cool too, he gots the "I'm a bad ass" attitude of an American AND a Japanese! Argentinean: Ralf and Clark? Cool beans. Where are Heidern and what's her name from? Australia: ? English: Eagle. C'mon, he's gay and he's not a punk rocker. Dudly is alright, though bit cliche, he has style! Birdie is funny but that's it, nice costume, but that's not enough. Brazil: Sean. Bit boring, but not stereotypic. Chinese: Chun Li. Her costume and girlish attitude is stereotypic, but her bad ass, cop attitude is not. Not for a Chinese woman anyway. Chin is your generic drunken fighter old man dude. Bleach. I love Shun from VF a lot more! Filipino: ? French: Shermie and Remy. Cool folks. Though Remy is a bit stuck up, he is too cool. Is Lion from VF French? I love Lion! German: Hugo. He's a wrestling stereotype, but not a German stereotype. What is a German stereotype? Krauser? Don't like Krauser one bit. Wolf in VF is cool. Italian: Terry? Andy? Rose? Rose is cool. LIke some weird fashion model, but cool. Japanese: Goro and Beni. Not Kyo or Iori cause those two are archtypes of the angry young man hero and villain. Yamazaki is stereotypic Yakuza gangster but still cool cause he's crazy. Koreans: I don't know what there stereotype is, but Kim's team, all five of them, are cool. Mexicans: Ramon? Thunder Hawk is from a tribe in the USA, not Mexico if I recal, he emigrated the opposite way after Bison destroyed his tribe's home. Angel is from Mexico right? Although I like her design, I'm not sure I like her representing Mexico, being that she is a bit skanky. Norway: ? Spanish: ?Few SFEX characters from Spain I think, don't care much for them though. Sweden: Chris. Don't care much for him, but he's not run of the mill either.
Anybody want to add to the list.

Juan... I wonder how come you have so much knowledge about Mexico if you are Irish. My only rant is that she doesn't speak Spanish at all + She speaks perfect japanese.... Our countries are filled with people [AGREE], yet those people DO speak spanish.
... It is obvious, programmers mostly use their countries to do people that they found "cool" -hate that word- or normal... Since they have used all the "normal ideas" within their own countries they have to resort to weird & unrealistic cliches when they think about other countries.
.... That's the kind of knowledge that comes with a 40° drink.
& Juna, be kind enough to remind Juan that H-E I-S N-O-T I-R-I-S-H & also point out to Juan that I can move freely through the topics, as I did before mastering the powerful "Voodoo Dances" fighting techniques.

Hmnnnn.... I didn't approached the subject on that perspective, it makes more sense now.

I have no problem about hyper stereotype Shermie, but I have a huge problem with Remy, who is not a stereotype, has a stupid stage, a stupid scenario and a stupid, stupid, stupid ending. And St Seya Hades wasn't out yet at the time.

"When I was in a Japanese history class at one of the first colleges I went to, I did a presentation on anime. I included a part with Japanese portrayals of American Africans with tape of several shows I edited together. The teacher said something like, "oh no not this again." I didn't completely understand where he was coming from until years later at another college where I had to listen to P.C. bullshit wasting weeks out of almost every class. The teacher probably had to listen to tons of bullshit lectures and employee training b.s. on stuff like that.
"Sadly,Americans also have the HARSH and dumb stereotype of the Japanese with buck crooked teeth.(although it's true, all Japanese don't have buck teeth)"
No we don't
That sounds like an anti Japan WW2 poster. WW2 was 60 years ago.
Japanese portrayal of blacks: Their portrayal of blacks is just a reflection of what they have been exposed to.
Good stereotype: My friend said to me, ever notice how in all these Japanese series there's usually one guy in the group that's an American? They like us! So he liked that they liked us."
I agree with Gen and Rugal. I don't agree at all with the "Look! That asian character appears to enjoy eating rice! STEREOTYYYYYPE!!!" Like Gen and Rugal have said, there's not really any black people in Japan, so it's not like they've really hung out with any of them. I think it's funny when the Japanese have Japanese tourists with cameras in games (and anime... there's a line in Gunsmith Cats that I'm thinking about...). It's just their way at laughing at themselves. Nothing wrong with that. As for the "Americans think that the Japanese are all buck-toothed goons that say, 'ah-soooo!' all the time" is wrong. That was around WW2. It's not like we were going to look at them in a good way back then anyway, since they were one of the groups of people we were in a war against. Plus, Japan's emperor/ president/ king/ whatever from that time didn't help that stereotype at all (that's where America picked up the "ah-soo!" thing). And that stereotype isn't around today. It's been gone a long time. I don't agree with that stereotype, and neither do pretty much everyone else I know.
Some of the characters mentioned here that were accused of being a stereotype are characters I enjoy using. Take Birdy, for example. I don't see how he'd be a stereotype in ANY way. I liked him after playing with him a bit in the Alpha series. My favorite moves of his are his chain throws where he wraps the opponent up in one of his chains and slings them around. Very cool stuff. And you can't say that all black characters are stereotypes. What about Dudley? I know someone's mentioned him. He's cool and is as non-stereotypical as you can get. Lucky Glauber, on the other hand, could easily be considered a stereotype. I can't stand Lucky (or anyone else from the American team in KOF 97&8?) just because he's a lame character and has stupid moves. I hate Brian Battler for the same reasons.
People need to stop being so overly sensitive. I think there are a lot less stereotypes floating around than in the past, but people keep trying to find something to complain about. I see the whole "this ethnic group doesn't really look just like the real ethnic group" (someone from Mexico not looking identical to a latino, for example) as just the way they were drawn. Think about it: how many Japanese characters in games and anime from Japan actually look Japanese? Not very many.

quote: Talim from Soul Cailbur II is probably the most known filipina in video games. Doesn't have a lot to her character. 4'8"...MAN, that's short. People talk about how, say, a 5' tall Rimururu brandishing a sword is about as intimidating as a scoop of strawberry ice cream topped with whip cream. But...4'8"! Can anyone think of anyone shorter than that? (Besides freaks like Choi bounge or what not...)
There was a love sim game a few years back that starred a filipina...can't remember the name though. Anyone help? The title of the game was the name of a particular flower native to the Philippines...
Well, Filipina teen height ranges from 5 to 6 feet. With Talim's age being 15, I could say that she's a normal example of a short Filipina... Although I swear I have never seen her weapon before...
What happened to the filipina girl in the dating sim? Can anyone post any links?
Hmm... famous Philippine stuff in games... all I can remember is Batangas getting nuked in Front Mission. Oh, and that ex-soldier who joined your party, Jose Astrada. Guess what? Our ex-President's name is Joseph Estrada, and he was once an action star. :)
EDIT: What in blazes!? Maria Santos!? Talk about picking up the most common names...
she's Filipina? if anyone minds posting, what's her story in the game?
funny that Sklathill mentions her being the most-known Filipina in video games. i really would've never guessed
actually, she reminds me a lot of FFVII's Yuffie. i mean, the short hair, the height, the "carefree young girl" look, the weapon (sorta. i haven't really gotten that good of a look at Talim's weapon @_@), and one of her outfits. every time i see a guy playing as her, i could swear it's really Yuffie jumping around the screen
haha, Filipinos in general are pretty short. i mean, i'm short (5'7") compared to a lot of people in the U.S., and when i visited the Philippines a while back, god, i could not believe my eyes. i also got a lot of comments from several people about my height (and they all made fun of me because i only spoke English ¬_¬ call me "American Boy" one more time and see what happens HISS)

Totally know what you mean. Can't speak tagalog a lick so I get it too. And I'm not quite 6'0", which doesn't help. I play the piano like no one else's business, and so I'm an instant hit with the older crowd. :) The weapons are kinda like bladed tonfas with a sai concept extension, which doesn't strike me at all as a filipino weapon.
Oh. I remember thinking that Ellis from Toshinden wears the closest thing I've seen to a barong dress (kind of transparent clothing of finely woven fabric of pineapple leaves, typically white or off-white) which I thought was a total hoot back when PSX came out. My sister would joke about playing the pinay in the game...totally cracked us up.
