quote: I think the "who makes better RPGs" is still open to speculation. American RPG's are somewhat closer to what a real RPG is, i.e Dungeons and Dragons formula, where you role-play by making your own character. While Japanese RPG's definitely always have a better plot and interesting environments, they generally are pretty linear and American RPG's are much more open ended such as in Baldur's Gate or Morrowind. Also the battle systems are usually always more complicated then the easy fight, magic, item systems of Japanese RPG's. I think it all comes down to a matter of personal taste, I like both Japanese and American RPG's but its fun many times not to be restricted by a set story and there is nothing like creating a chaotic evil character that wipes out whole towns ^_^
True. I forgot about Baldur's Gate and Morrowind... I've played through BG, but I've only seen Morrowind. It looked pretty cool. I guess what I like more about Japanese RPG's are the visuals, character designs, the stories, and stuff like that.... The only thing I didn't like about alignment in BG was that I couldn't keep the evil elf chickie (drow, I think?????) in my party- I was chaotic good, she was evil. I did cheat and edited a couple of people's alignment so I could get them to stay, though (like that girl that always said, "If it bleeds, I can kill it!").
