Played it thru first stage at friend's...
It didn't feel like old Shinobi games, but still cool. It's a straight action game. No stopping to collect stuff, no solving puzzles... Just keep advancing forward while hacking & slashing off oncoming legions of enemy ninja (& dogs).
You can actually chain kills together to pull off slightly impressive finishing move.
Game looks pretty good (nothing mind blowing), moves fast, and controls well, etc.

But I can see how it might get somewhat repetitive if enemy & environment designs don't change much between levels.

As it is, I don't think it's worth $50, but definitely worth $30 or less. IMO.

I knew they wouldn't keep anything of the original gameplay. This game never seemed to have much to do with the series to start with. I guess it should have been given another name altogether.
Rygar seems much more faithful, and I am placing high hopes in that game. And just like Maria Carey, I would give my all for a remake of Bionic Commando, 2D or 3D.

Sounds like it is worth a rental. SEGA is really advertising this game. I have seen som many SEGA commercials on TV since Space Channel 5.

On the subject of Shinobi, has any checked out the new comic book? I think Dark Horse brings it out. I skimmed through the first issue at the shop, but it seemed like not much was going on.

Well I was thinking of the coin op actually. I've always found this game excellent. The NES and GB versions were great too, weren't they. But I didn't know about that Nazi thing.

Well, to me it's faithful to the spirit of the original. And if you just want to throw shuriken all day (actually it's kunai, at least with the main character),,,

You can unlock Joe Musashi. So there!

Anyway, it's an awesome game. Feels great to play, and they have very worthwhile extras and ranks to facilitate replay value.

Definitely check it out for yourself.

As a devout Shinobi fan (and Sega fan, for that matter) I MUST have this game. I heard that the difficulty is very high. Excellent, I say.

Speaking of difficult games, I've been making my way through Devil May Cry lately. The difficulty is just perfect. Right now the last boss is pissing me off, though.

Useless but true fact: Australian soldiers used "We're Off to See the Wizard" as a marching song during WWII.

That's not entirely true, if you make it to the boss and die you can "retry" and be able to fight the boss again.

It can get annoying on the stages with a lot of good falling places though.

Just remember to save your Invincible Stars and Devil Stars for Dante Must Die mode...you know, when the game REALLY becomes difficult!

I've never played any shinobi games and I'm really looking forward to playing my first. I'll have to cop this one.

I managed to rent it yesterday and am impressed with the game so far. You really, really need on top of your game since you're essentially screwed if you make a mistake.

Things I liked:

Getting off such a high kill combo that you can whack a boss with one shot.

Running on walls is fun.

Things I didn't like:

Repetative level designs. I've already managed to get lost in a few simple areas just because there's nothing telling you where to go and all the walls look identical.

Everyone in the game, including THE DOGS, have better body armor than my ninja.

Occasionally bad camera: I mis-adjusted the camera right before a group of enemies attacked and was forced to fight my way out while staring up at my ninja's butt.

The fall down a hole and you die thing is a major gripe. Not only is it harder to judge distances in 3D, you at least had two extra lives in the old games. With this one it's back to the very start of the level. You can lock onto enemies, why can't you lock onto the ledge you want to hop to?

So far it's a frustrating but fun game even if those damn jumps are hard to land.
